The Fort Edmonton Footbridge Project

The Fort Edmonton Footbridge is a signature pedestrian suspension bridge located in SW Edmonton.

The Fort Edmonton Footbridge project provides a river crossing and approach trails that further develop the Edmonton s River Valley. Tender Closing July 9, 2008 Construction Sept 6, 2008 to November 10, 2010 Construction Cost - $ 23 M

Bridge Details The bridge has three spans, including two 54 m side spans and the 138 m main span. Two continuous main cables support the precast concrete deck panels over the length of the bridge. The cables are anchored in abutments at both ends of the bridge, and are clamped into saddles at the tops of two towers.

Project Scope of Work Environmental management. River berm installation and removal. Concrete abutments with post-tensioned soil anchor foundations. Concrete/ Steel Towers with concrete belvederes. Suspension cable & support system. Precast deck panels. Post-tensioning Architectural steel components. Trail construction and landscaping. Environmental compensation.

Getting Started

Access Roads & Berm Construction - River berms constructed from both sides of river to access both Tower locations

Environmental Management - Aqua-Barrier water filled dams & floating silt curtains.

Berm footprints were minimized to provide less environmental impact. Berm elevations were approved at the 1:5 year water levels. Rock Rip Rap, concrete topping, and geotextile liner.

Tower Construction

Tower Foundations - Two belled caissons 2.4m diameter. 12.5m deep with 3.6m bell. Temporary steel casings used for water control.

Tower Foundations Caisson Installation

Tower Base - Solider pile & lagging shoring for tower base.

Tower Base Concrete Formwork & Shoring

Tower Columns 1.220m dia. steel pipe with tower head reinforcing cage.

Tower Columns - Survey control during erection using laser targets to achieve installation within 10mm tolerance at tower tops.

Tower Columns A-symmetrical concrete filled steel tower columns. - Horizontal & diagonal struts to control column positions.

Tower Head 53 m3 of cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete elevated 30m from river elevation.

Belvedere Construction Concrete Slab, post-tensioned, 100m3 each, elevated 12m.

Belvedere Construction Steel Shoring System: beams, H-Pile columns, steel scaffolding.

Belvedere Slab Transverse post-tensioning and post-tensioning ducts with anchorage for precast panel system.

Abutment Construction concrete raft slab with post-tensioned soil anchors.

Abutment Construction Soil Anchors, 60 per abutment, 16-22m depth.

Abutment Construction Anchors for suspension cable.

Abutment Construction Abutment chamber - 1.3m raft slab, 1.1m thick walls, 0.3m thick roof slab.
