1 How to Connect to a Shared Printer Windows (Desktop) Computers on our domain. 1) Click on the Start Button and select Devices and Printers 2) Click Add a printer Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 1 of 13

3 5) Connect to the printer using one of the following two methods: A. Search for it in the Active Directory (Method 1) a. Select Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature and then click Next b. Click the Browse button, click the printer location and then click OK c. Click Find Now d. Select the printer you want to connect to and then click OK B. Select a Shared Printer by Name (Method 2) a. Select a shared printer by name. b. Browse for it on the network. 4 Windows (Laptops Only) Computers not on domain. 1. Make sure you are connected to the internet physically via Ethernet cable and not wirelessly. Click on the Start Button and Select Printers and Devices 2. Click on Add Printer Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 4 of 13

5 3. Click on The printer that I want isn t listed and click Next 4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and click Next Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 5 of 13

6 5. Type in the IP address of our print server Select Customs and click Settings Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 6 of 13

7 7. In Protocol choose LPR. For Queue Name please contact the Help Desk for the specific Queue Name needed. Click Ok 8. Leave the next window that appears open for the meanwhile. 8 Run the downloaded program Extract the files onto your Desktop, and then click OK Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 8 of 13

9 Return to the add printer windows and click on Have Disk Click Browse and find the extracted file on the desktop, then click Ok Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 9 of 13

10 9. Now that the printer is installed, once a document is sent to print, open a web browser window and type /pcounter or follow this link, Use your domain logon to authenticate then click Log In. Once on the website, the queued Print documents will be listed. Select the document that you want to print, and then select Print to release the job. If your job is not showing up, please click the Refresh button to reload the page. If you continue to experience issues please contact the help desk. 11 Mac Installation Tutorial 1. Make sure you are connected to the internet physically via the Ethernet and not wirelessly. Select System Preference from the Apple Menu 2. Click Printers & Scanners 3. Click the + button to add a printer Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 11 of 13

12 4.Go to the IP Tab of the add window, in Address type the IP of the Printer wanted. For Protocol, Line Printer Daemon-LPD must be selected. Please Help Desk for the Queue Name. Name and Location can be of one s choosing. Select Generic PCL Printer for Use. If you do not have a generic PCL driver option please download and install Gutenprint on your Macintosh before continuing with this step. When you are done inputting the specifications for the printer, click Add. Check Duplexer and click OK Connect to a Shared Printer Tutorial Page 12 of 13

13 You should now see the printer as an option for you to print from on your computer. 5. Now that the printer is installed, once a document is sent to print, open a web browser window and type /pcounter or follow this link, Use your domain logon to authenticate then click OK or Log In, depending on your web browser. 6.Once on the website, the awaiting Print documents will be listed. Click on the name of document that you want to print, and then select Print to release the job. If your job is not showing up please click the Refresh button to reload the page.
