5 ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon Is a public university established in Pursuing teaching, research and community service activities, it plays a major role in educating qualified specialists and personnel, whose cultural, scientific and technical skills enable them to contribute to sustainable development both at the national and the global level. The strategic objectives of ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon are: innovation, quality, internationalization and development of an entrepreneurial culture. With approximately 8500 students enrolled in undergraduate (52%) and postgraduate (48%) programs, 450 teachers and 220 non-teaching staff. Demonstrates a high rate of graduates employability and achieves the 100% rate in most of the courses.

6 ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon ISCTE-IUL scientific and pedagogical expertise covers a wide range of areas: Accounting, Anthropology, Architecture, Computer Sciences, Economics, Finance, History, Law, Management, Marketing, Psychology, Quantitative Methods, Sociology and Public Policy. ISCTE-IUL offers international bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in all these areas. At present the Institute offers 15 undergraduate degrees, 9 doctoral programmes, more than 60 master programmes and more than 40 postgraduate/executive master programmes. The institution includes 9 research centers. ISCTE-IUL promotes the teachers mobility in Europe, Africa and Latin America Universities.

7 Department of architecture and urbanism The Department of Architecture and Urbanism (DAU) has its genesis in an innovative processes approach of teaching and learning architecture in Portugal. The multiple scientific areas bring together sources of thinking reflection that make possible students to choose from a various educational programmes and acquire the needed skills to a knowledgeable design. The DAU ensures the coordination of scientific and pedagogical: Master in Architecture; Ph.D. in Architecture of the Metropolitan Contemporary Territories; Advanced studies 3rd cycle postgraduate programme in digital architecture.

9 Research university DINAMIA CET - Research centre on Socio-Economic Change and the Territory DINÂMIA-CET develops multidisciplinary research in these main areas of research are: (1) Innovation, Knowledge and Work; (2) Governance, Economy and Society; (3) Cities and Territories. DINÂMIA-CET is member of several national and international networks among which the European Network for Housing Research/ENHR.

10 Research university DINAMIA CET - Research centre on Socio-Economic Change and the Territory Cities and Territories Dinamia CET has a line research: Housing, habitat and ways of living. This research programme seeks to study the quantitative and qualitative changes in housing dynamics in Portugal as well as to make international comparisons. Research in this domain has covered different subjects such as: -the housing market, -residential trajectories and their relationship to social recomposition, -strategic plans for housing and aims to support the formulation, implementation and -evaluation of public policies.

11 Research university Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center The scientific profile of ISTAR derives from its mission and vision and is guided by the set of available human (integrated researchers, associated researchers, phd students) and physical resources (space, equipments). In this section we describe the scientific topics and provide an initial mapping of these topics onto established scientific domains and for a (scientific classifications, journals and conferences, and similar research and technological initiatives). ISTAR is organized in four research lines or groups: (1) Digital Living Spaces, (2) Information Systems, (3) Software Systems Engineering, (4) Complexity and Computational Modeling

Human computer interaction (HCI): user models, usability testing, multimodal interaction 2. Virtual / mixed / augmented reality 3. Natural language processing: speech, language resources, dialogue, natural language 4. Ubiquitous and mobile computing: ambient assisted living, accessibility 5. Computer vision: object detection, recognition and identification, tracking, reconstruction 6. Computer graphics & animation 7. Computer games 8. Design methods and models 9. Kinetic architecture systems 10. Performance design 11. Digital fabrication: Fablabs 12. Shape studies and knowledge representation 13. Interdisciplinary teams involving the group and other peers, including architects, designers, computer scientists, sociologists, philosophers and anthropologists. 2. Transdisciplinary collaborations are also developed between experts from different fields, citizens, communities, and other stakeholders from civil society, industry and business. Research is supported by two laboratories owned by the group: * Interactive Media Lab * Digital Fabrication - Vitruvius FabLab

14 Research university ISTAR - Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center Digital Living Spaces: Interactive Media Lab Featuring a large CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment (6 m long x 3 m tall x 3.5 m wide) installed in the Lousal Live Science Museum, a PocketCAVE (3,3 m long, 2.5 m tall), Head Mounted Display with Eye Tracking, Anthropomorphic Robot (NAO), Biometric sensors (EMG, EDR, ECG, EEG), EMOTIV INSIGHT sensor, 3D sensors (Kinect), Ambisonics Microphone, High quality 7:1 surround sound system, Synthetic Smell devices, mobility equipment (smartphones, tablets), high-end 3D computers. These facilities enable advanced research in immersive environments, augmented reality, novel embodiment experiments and natural multimodal interaction, as well as the liaison with the industry.

15 Research university ISTAR - Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center Digital Living Spaces: Digital Fabrication - Vitruvius FabLab Digital fabrication is an area that is central in the group and ISCTE-IUL facilities of Vitruvius Fab Lab are being used to develop research in crosscollaboration with several stakeholders. Within an innovative trans-disciplinary environment of collective thinking and acting, the group tests/uses and implements advanced computational design processes for AEC in collaboration with the society and stakeholders from the industry and local or national institutes in order to answer real design problems and to relate research with the community. Equipments: LEAPFROG 3D printer, a OUTPLAN router CNC axis CNC milling machine with a working area of 3.0m x 2.0m, a precision IMODELA CNC milling machine and a digital electronics lab.

17 CONCLUSIONS Role within the network The ISCTE-IUL multidisciplinary group can offer a collaborative research tools to clarify the interfaces and productive exchange between urban and housing design and its social, economical, political and cultural implications. Based in faculty expertise and new pedagogic research methods we can challenge the network to question and reflect on: new research issues and new approaches to architecture university curricula (namely in what respects to the relation between architecture and social sciences), that can be presented as an added value to the network and as new lines to future research projects involving several members of the network; how the use of computing design can improve the design and performance of contemporary housing in Europe; how shape can be parametrically generated and evolve and, above all, how to take advantage of digital modeling to produce different physical objects. The researchers group will contribute to strategic developments in teaching and learning by providing a workshop programme on sustainable and collaborative urban and housing design at ISCTE-IUL.
