How to Insert Movies, Music, & Links into PowerPoint 1 Warning before trying any of the steps below make sure you are saving the PowerPoint file, movies, or music onto the same device. To avoid any problems, I would suggest you use a FLASH drive (also known as a thumb or jump drive). Adding MOVIES: 1. Save your PowerPoint to your flash drive. 2. Save the.wmv movie file you want to use to your flash drive. a. WARNING: This handout only shows how to insert.wmv movie files because they work best with PowerPoint. If you are trying to insert a.mov or.flv movie file into PowerPoint it becomes more complicated and you will need to ask for additional technical assistance. b. If you want to show a movie clip from the internet, download it and save it to your flash drive. c. If you can t download the movie from the internet, but still want to use it, skip down to the adding links section. 3. Click on the slide where the movie will be added. 4. At the top of your screen, click on Insert, Movies and Sounds, then Movie from file 5. From the look in drop down menu open your flash drive.
6. Click on the movie you want to use; then click OK A screen will pop up asking if you want your movie to play automatically. Click YES. 8. A box will appear showing how large the movie screen will be. You can adjust the size by dragging the corner dot. 9. Now view your PowerPoint show to make sure the movie plays automatically. Click on Slide Show then View Show.
Adding Music (Two Options): 3 OPTION 1: Insert music onto ONE slide 1. Save your PowerPoint to your flash drive. 2. Save the music file you want to use to your flash drive. a. If the song is on a CD, you must first rip that song in Windows Media Player so you can save the actual file to your computer or flash drive. Steps are below. b. Put the CD in the computer, and open the Windows Media Player. Click on the Rip tab. Put a check mark ONLY by the song you want to rip. Then click Rip music. c. Change the location of where the ripped music will be stored. Find and click on your Flash drive. Click OK. Now click on OK again. d. Once the song is done ripping, click on the Library tab. To make sure we know the exact location the song file, right click on the song and choose Open Containing Folder
3. Click on the slide where the music will be added At the top of your screen, click on Insert, Movies and Sounds, then Sound from file 5. From the look in drop down menu open your flash drive. 6. Click on the song you want to use; then click OK. a. If you didn t see your song, make sure that all of the files are showing. You can show all of the files by choose All Files under the drop down menu of Files of type at the bottom of the window. b. If you still don t see your song, make sure you are looking in the right place.
7. A window will pop up asking if you want your song to play automatically. Click Yes A little horn will now appear on your slide. You can move the horn to the corner of the slide so it won t be so noticeable. If you want to hide the icon completely read steps 8-9 on the Multiple Slides directions below. OPTION 2: Insert music onto MULTIPLE slides (e.g. adding a soundtrack) 1. Save your PowerPoint to your flash drive. 2. Save the music file you want to use to your flash drive. If the song is on a CD, you must first rip that song in Windows Media Player so you can save the actual file to your computer or flash drive. Steps are listed in Option 1 under # Click on the slide where the music/soundtrack will begin playing. 4. At the top of your screen, click on Insert, Movies and Sounds, then Sound from file 5. From the look in drop down menu open your flash drive. 6. Click on the song you want to use; then click OK. a. If you didn t see your song, make sure that all of the files are showing. You can show all of the files by choose All Files under the drop down menu of Files of type at the bottom of the window.
6 b. If you still don t see your song, make sure you are looking in the right place. 7. A window will pop up asking if you want your song to play automatically. Click Yes. 8. A little horn will now appear on your slide. Right click on the horn. The Custom Animation menu will appear on the right side of your screen. 9. Click on the drop down menu beside your song and choose Effect Options.
10. On this window, choose any of the effects you want including hiding the horn icon, adjusting your volume, and making the song play during multiple slides. Click OK Play your slideshow to make sure the sound is how you want it.
Adding Links: 8 1. Save your PowerPoint to your flash drive. 2. If you plan on creating links to any kind of file (movie, word document, excel spreadsheet, PDF, etc), make sure that file is saved on your flash drive. 3. Click on the slide where the movie will be added. 4. On the slide type what you want the link to be called (e.g. click here, or check out my cool video ) 5. Highlight the word or words that you want to make a link. Now click on Insert, then Hyperlink. 6. If you are linking to a file (movie, document, etc), find the location of that file by clicking on the Look in drop down menu. Find your file, and then click OK. 7. If you are linking to a web address, paste the web address at the bottom of the screen where it says Address: Click OK when done. 8. The words you highlighted earlier should now be underlined. Check to make sure your link works by viewing your slideshow. When you move the mouse over the link, it should turn into a hand. Click on it to make sure it is linked correctly.
