1 REPORT on the workshop in Sopot, The meeting organized in March 2012 can be perceived as the major event which opened a new and the last year of Polish-Swedish cooperation in the framework of the Catching the Future Project. In accordance with the planned activities of the CTF Project there was a two-day meeting in Sopot in March 19-20, 2012, composed of four major parts: workshop seminar, festive dinner, business brunch and company visits. DAY 1 Workshop seminar During the first day, Monday, the meeting was held in the assembly representative hall B of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk in Armii Krajowej Street 119/121. The international workshop attracted over 100 participants, including The Faculty of Economics authorities, Polish and Swedish partners in the CTF project, entrepreneurs engaged in the CTF, other businessmen potentially interested and/or involved in relations with Swedish firms, some representatives of the Faculty of Economics and young students from technical schools from Pomerania region, cooperating with the CTF Project. 2 The opening ceremony started at with two key presentations. The first speech was given by Dean of the Faculty of Economics, professor Krzysztof Dobrowolski. Dean of the Faculty of Economics, professor Krzysztof Dobrowolski, is opening the meeting. Then, as a host and the SA in the CTF Project, professor Hanna Treder welcomed and introduced the audience to the agenda of the workshop. Professor Hanna Treder, the SA, is welcoming the audience 2

3 After that opening part three business subjects were presented. All the issues were perceived as very interesting both from the Polish and the Swedish points of view. As the first, professor Przemysław Kulawczuk from the Faculty of Economics was focused on an important issue of Tax system in Poland. Professor Przemysław Kulawczuk is presenting: Tax system in Poland Then Mr. Marcin Piątkowski from Invest in Pomerania and professor Bohdan Jeliński from the Faculty of Economics delivered a presentation on Special Economic Zones in Poland. 4 Then there was a coffee break organized in the largest hall at the Faculty of Economics. During the break the hosts and the guests had an opportunity to develop some issues presented before and to build interpersonal relationships. 5 After the coffee break the next interesting subject was shown. It was concentrated on Institutional support for business. That issue was presented by professor Anna M. Nikodemska-Wołowik from the Faculty of Economics and a group of guests from three Pomeranian institutions: Ms. Katarzyna Matuszak, Ms. Monika Michałowska and Ms. Marcelina Przybysz from Pomerania Development Agency Co., Ms. Agnieszka Górecka from the Centre of Entrepreneurship in Sopot - Enterprise Europe Network, Ms. Joanna Oberbek and Ms. Karolina Zdrojewska from The Marshal Office of Pomeranian Voivodship as the leaders in the INNOPomorze Programme. The audience during the presentation: on Institutional support for business Then another important subject was presented titled: Successful projects of business cooperation. Business practitioners: Mr. Wiesław Bluma from Kinna Production and Ms. Urszula Wiśniewska-Erenmalm from Andrem Company shared with the audience their own wide experiences in creating cooperation with Swedish partners. The part of workshop was moderated by professor Dorota Simpson from the Faculty of Economics. 5

The first one was focused on Organizing of international business for young entrepreneurs by professor Eugeniusz Gostomski from the Faculty of Economics. In that case the target audience of the presentation was composed of the young students from the technical schools functioning in the Pomeranian region. Young students from the technical schools are participating in prof. Gostomski s show At the same time, simultaneously, the other issue was shown: Formal and informal rules of business (cultural differences). It was prepared by professor Dorota Simpson together with Aleksander Komorowski from Kalex Company, a 6

7 business practitioner with wide and deep experiences in establishing firms and creating trade relations between Swedish and Polish partners. Mr. Aleksander Komorowski is telling about the formal and informal rules of business Festive Dinner The seminar was closed during dinner held at Harnaś restaurant located in the wood close to the Faculty of Economics in Sopot. Among the invited participants there were businessmen from the CTF Project, representatives of Polish and Swedish firms and the CTF team from the both countries. The guests and the hosts are gathering at Harnaś Restaurant 7

8 DAY 2. Business Brunch The next day, Tuesday, was divided into two major parts. In the morning a business brunch was organized in a representative place in Sopot. The Polish CTF team with professor Hanna Treder, the SA, as the leader chose an elegant and presentable restaurant in the Opera Hotel situated in the forest in Sopot. The hosts Polish CTF team was composed of the academics from the Faculty of Economics: Hanna Treder, Bohdan Jeliński, Dorota Simpson, Anna M. Nikodemska-Wołowik, Przemysław Kulawczuk, Eugeniusz Gostomski, Andrzej Poszewiecki and Katarzyna Kuchcińska. Among the guests there was such excellent person as the Marshal of Pomeranian Voivodship, Mr. Mieczysław Struk. The hosts are welcoming the Marshal in Opera Hotel Moreover, there were CTF partners from Sweden, Swedish businessmen, Polish participants of the CTF Project, representative of Pomeranian Special Economic Zone and some representatives of Polish enterprises and BRE Bank. 8

10 Marshal of Pomeranian Voivodship, Mr. Mieczysław Struk Then Ms. Anna Rózycka from Pomeranian Special Economic Zone presented some opportunities and economic advantages for firms which considered functioning in special zones. Ms. Anna Różycka is presenting Pomeranian Special Economic Zone 10

11 The audience was also interested in a speech provided by Anna Sztangierska, a director of the Gdańsk branch of BRE Bank. She was focused on the practical aspects of shaping an offer of banking services for SME sector. Anna Sztangierska from BRE Bank is speaking The next speaker, Ulf Petho, HSA on the side of Sweden, made some comments to the current event as well as to the entire CTF project. The official part was closed by professor Bohdan Jeliński who summed up the hitherto cooperation. Ulf Petho, SA, is giving some comments 11

About the noon, some of the Swedish participants visited Polish firms functioning in the region. Those visits took place in: VETREX in Tczew, BASE Group in Koszwały, Robex in Lębork and in the Hel Marine Station. 12
