BALÁZS MAJOR PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Esztergom lies along the right bank of the River Danube in Komárom-Esztergom County. The town is considered to be one of the most significant historical and cultural centres as it lies at the crossroads of important geographical zones 1

2 and trade routes. As the very first royal seat and the most prominent ecclesiastical centre of our country, its significance reaches far beyond the Carpathian basin, it is pan European. The rich history goes back to prehistory and the first people known by name who established settlements here are the Celts, who were followed by the Romans and they connected the castle hill to the limes, their international border guard system over Europe under the name Solva. Around 972 Géza, grand duke moved his seat here. His son István was born and baptized here, this was the place where he got married and crowned and also where he died. The establishment of the Hungarian state was carried out from the castle hill at Esztergom. It continued to be the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom and its most important ecclesiastical centre until the 13 th century, and it was the royal centre of the Árpád dynasty, well-known throughout Europe. Here was one of the most significant meeting points of civilizations of the continent as it lay at the crossroads of the Latin West and the Orthodox Byzantine Empire, where prominent personages such as Bouillon Gottfried and the leaders of the first Crusade, Louis VII and his wife Eleonore of Aquitaine, Frederick Barbarossa Holy Roman Emperor or Villard d Honnecourt the greatest architect of the 13 th century visited. The most famous troubadour of medieval Europe Gaucelm Faidit spent a decade in the Esztergom court of Andrew II. After the court had moved the town still maintained its significant political and cultural status, where the archbishops often played determinative roles in the events and cultural trends of Europe. Various European rulers and scientists were frequent visitors to the castle then in episcopal ownership, and it acted as a leading centre in the Renaissance of Central Europe in the 15 th century. After the battle at Mohács it was among the major fortresses along the Christian- Ottoman frontline, from which era in contrast to the numerous destructive sieges significant buildings have survived, among others the north-westernmost mosque of the Ottoman empire and several bath buildings. The town after the final liberation helped by John Sobieski Polish king in 1683 was reconstructed in Baroque style, but the episcopal seat brought back in the 18 th century required an ecclesiastical building and the most iconic structure of the town, the basilica was rebuilt in Classical style. The building consecrated in 1856 was celebrated in the mass composed by Ferenc Liszt. The other symbol of the town the Mária-Valéria Bridge constructed in 1895 was considered to be the most up-to-date structure of the time and today it connects countries. In 2003 the town became the headquarter of the Ister-Granum Euro Region, in 2009 it was changed to Ister-Granum EGTC, which offers closer cooperation projects among the members. - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS A number of institutions play a significant role in the cultural life of the town the most noteworthy being the St Adalbert Conference Centre run by the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese and the infrastructure of catering and accommodation, the Christian Museum, the Esztergom Castle Museum owned by the Hungarian National Museum, Balassa Bálint Museum and the Castle Theatre. Besides the numerous elementary and high schools in the town, the most important educational facility is the Iohanneum education centre of Pázmány Péter Catholic University. The cultural programmes offered are remarkably colourful, including several local festivals of interest as The Historical Days of Esztergom, The Esztör Festival, the Music Festival on St. Stephen s Day and the Wine Festival. Almost every evening there are performances in the castle theatre, and concerts can be listened to in the Basilica and in other churches of town. There are pop music concerts at several points of the town during the whole summer. Because of easy approach the cultural programmes offered in Slovak Párkány are worth mentioning. - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) The closest international airport is the Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, from which drive along road number 4 then after getting off the M0 ring road, take road 11 that leads to Esztergom in 90 minutes. From Budapest trains from Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western railway station) take you to Esztergom. There are coach line services also leaving from the terminal near Árpád-híd (bridge) or less frequently from Újpest-Városkapu terminal for these you have to purchase the tickets in advance at the station itself. Also as an alternative - a boat service connects Budapest and Esztergom on a regular basis operated by Mahart. - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) There are several bus lines within town that criss-cross the whole of Esztergom. Besides this a bike rental opportunity is extremely popular - the Ebis, that can be used all over town, but not out of the city limits. There are also buses run by Tesco that help to get about town. 2

3 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION The Archaeology Department at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University besides training archaeologists based on a general curriculum considers a priority to train specialists who deal with the material dating from the beginnings of Christianity to the early modern age. Students have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork both within and outside the country. Classical language knowledge related to the given research themes is a significant item of the curriculum. Besides these the strengths of the department are based on geophysical and special IT courses (databases, GIS). The practical training section of the Department is housed in the Iohanneum building of the PPCU in Esztergom, where among others the GIS lab equipped with the most cutting-edge technology and restorer workshop and library are available. The Department accredited on a BA and MA archaeology programme in English as well considers internationality as a priority, and approximately two dozen of its research and training projects are aimed to be conducted together with students and instructors from international areas. The most prominent of these is the international camp at Esztergom, where besides participation in research and instruction programs high priority is given to becoming familiar with Hungarian culture and history. ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK The Vitéz János Hostel is situated at the foot of the Castle and Basilica Hill on the most beautiful site of town. It is for the convenience of the students that the venue for the lectures and partially for the practical sessions is just a few steps away from the building. This is the Esztergom site of the PPCU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Vitéz János Pedagogical Centre. The building received back from the state in 1990 was fully refurbished in 2015, so the students have modern bathroom facilities along the corridors, modernized kitchens, laundry room equipped with washing machines, TV in the lounge and WIFI can be connected to throughout the building. MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) The St. Adalbert Restaurant nearby is a high quality self -service restaurant, that offers three kinds of main courses daily. Out of the three set courses, one is always vegetarian, so everybody can find something for their preferences. Right next to the Hostel there is a dairy shop which offers special home-made yoghourts and cheeses for breakfast. All about town there are several restaurants, pizzerias, bakery stores, fast-food places so any special demand can be met. RECEPTION OF STUDENTS - MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST MEETING - FOR EACH COURSE WHERE DIFFERENT) 2500 Esztergom, Májer István út 1-3., :00 am EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES - SITE VISITS There is a huge variation of sights in Esztergom; it houses several local and national collections, like the collection at the Balassa Bálint Museum, the Christian Museum, the Episcopal Treasury etc. Not far from town is the Danube Bend, 3

4 Visegrád with the royal castle and the citadel and also Szentendre, while Budapest that is the home of the largest museums of the country is not a long distance either. These places can be easily reached both by coach and train within less than an hour and a half. - SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION) The building of the University has a gym that can be used for football and basketball games, moreover it is supplied with equipment for gymnastics (rings, uneven bars etc.). The building is open till 9pm on weekdays. The St. Stephen Beach is open all over the year from 6am to 7pm daily. The Aquasziget (Aqua island) Esztergom offers several opportunities for sports, pools of various sizes, fitness rooms, volleyball court and gym. It is open all over the year from 10am to 8pm. - ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES) During July and August performances are held at the Várszínház (Castle Theatre), the programme for 2016 has not been published yet, but normally there are two performances per week at least. Pop concerts are organized by summer festivals such as the Music Festival on St Stephen s Day, or during the Wine Festival. There is a mobile cinema held in the Cultural Centre once a month, the details can be seen on their website (mozgomozi.hu). 4

During the second week of the course the material culture of medieval Esztergom will be focused on, with special attention to pottery, metalwork and stone carving. In this manner students become familiar with the professional handling of these objects and how to acquire information from the artefacts themselves. This is achieved through lectures in the morning and practical work in the afternoons. During the third week the architecture of royal Esztergom is looked at, and based on this future town development and touristic development prospects are touched on. Lectures, discussion following and practical sessions constitute the methodology. The fourth week focuses on the episcopal centre s architecture and collection. Based on these the future development in tourism and prospects for museum pedagogy in the field of ecclesiastic art is among our aims. Lectures in the morning, then discussion, practical information in the afternoon, visits to museums and other public collection are parts of the second half of the course. - DURATION TOTAL HOURS OF ACTIVITIES 110 h.
