SWIMMER An innovative Subsea Intervention System for Deep Offshore Fields Jean-Jacques QUESNEL CYBERNETIX S.A. Oil&Gas Division 1
The next generation of Challenges 2
Asset Integrity Monitoring New Challenges request new solutions Anchoring Line Monitoring Riser Monitoring Flow Assurance Subsea Production System I.M.R. 3
Inspection Maintenance & Repair SWIMMER is a new concept for underwater intervention. The system is based on an autonomous carrier vehicle which transports a standard ROV to a subsea docking station. Once docked, the ROV is controlled by the surface. Resident IMR system contributes to risk mitigation Hybrid technology offers a cost efficient business model AUV technology Offer new possibilities 4
Hybrid Concept SWIMMER : Subsea Work Inspection and Maintenance with Minimum Environment ROV (concept invented by CYBERNETIX in 1997) HYBRID AUV-ROV concept combines the best of both worlds. AUV acts as «pick-up truck» which transports ROV from SPS to SPS. ROV Strengths Real-time operator control Powered from surface production facilities through field umbilical Able to perform non-programmed, complex tasks Enhancements from AUV Technology Independence from MSV (subsea resident and host deployed) Projection of ROV where and when needed Programmed to perform simple and repetitive tasks under operator supervision 5
SWIMMER concept Support vessel LARS & maintenance (as an option) FPSO (Power & Control Rooms) LARS & maintenance Umbilicals Power & data to DS Docking stations Power & data to AUV/ROV Vehicle AUV ROV IMR package 6
SWIMMER Main Capabilities SWIMMER ROV-based IMR capabilities Global, close, and detail visual inspections Cleaning Valve operation Wall thickness measurement Cathodic Protection measurement Support to Electric diagnostic and troubleshooting Replacement of small components Assistance to large module replacement Leak detection, etc 7
SWIMMER Main Capabilities SWIMMER AUV-based IMR capabilities Field mapping Pipeline network survey Pipeline close visual inspection Pipeline free span detection Pipeline localization Dropped objects detection Pipeline Cathodic Protection measurement Pipeline leak detection 8
SWIMMER Main Capabilities 9
SWIMMER background Technical feasibility Technical & cost analysis (West Africa) Technical & cost analysis on Nigerian field Technical & cost analysis on Angola Block Development and qualification of a commercial SWIMMER 10
SWIMMER Targets Targeted fields for SWIMMER deployment 1) Offshore fields where extreme weather conditions prevent MSV interventions during long periods of time throughout the year 2) Remote offshore fields or offshore fields with low IMR activity where respectively no permanent MSV is available or needed 3) Offshore fields equipped with complex subsea equipment (multiphase separation or pumping, etc ) requiring frequent inspections 4) Offshore fields where IMR activity is very high and SWIMMER can relieve the MSV workload 11
SWIMMER Suitability for deep fields A suitable solution for deep offshore fields Being independent from support vessel Can be deployed from host facility Capable of staying deployed up to 3 months without maintenance Able to be turned into a resident subsea intervention tool Is naturally well positioned to efficiently address many of these issues, and therefore can step up from a so-called «enhancing technology» to a so-called «enabling technology» for these fields. 12
SWIMMER Suitability for deep fields Indeed, SWIMMER can be instrumental to resolve or to assist in the resolution of several critical issues: All-year-round ability to perform routine operations The SWIMMER can perform on a regular basis IMR tasks to monitor the integrity of subsea production assets, as well as production support tasks if needed All-year-round ability to provide Diagnostic & Emergency support The SWIMMER can provide assistance in case of emergency, for flushing of lines, safety valves operation, etc 13
SWIMMER Suitability for deep fields Preservation of environment Oil spill: SWIMMER can detect oil leakage from pipeline or SPS very early on, and help operator to prepare appropriate containment measures (thru daily inspection) Reduction of vessel s traffic on site since SWIMMER does not require permanent support from a ROV vessel All electric vehicle & tooling (manips with bio-degradable oil) Safety of operations Personnel exposure to harsh weather conditions is reduced since SWIMMER does not require permanent support from a ROV vessel 14
SWIMMER Suitability for deep fields Integrated Operations for e-field If connected to the field data network, the SWIMMER docking stations become data hubs through which routine inspection and operation data can be sent to the field central control rooms on surface or on land (remote fields) Cost reductions By reducing the workload of DP2 class MSV, SWIMMER contributes to OPEX savings 15
Conclusion & Perspectives Current Status Today, AUVs have become a commercial tool able to perform scientific, Oil&Gas, and military applications, mostly «surveys» R&D efforts throughout the industry are on-going to extend their capabilities (Oil&Gas and other industries, mainly military) A SWIMMER Detailed Qualification Plan has been developed based on FMECA and technology maturity assessment Qualification of key sub-systems is on-going The SWIMMER system is being considered by TOTAL for its Block17 offshore Angola 16
Conclusion & Perspectives Prepare the future For future deep offshore fields, trend where topside production facilities will progressively migrate toward: seabed intelligent, remotely operated, and autonomous facilities, coupled to ultra-long tieback and compression systems In a sustainable way The interest for and the workload of the SWIMMER concept and more generally of AUV-based intervention tools should therefore be increasing for the oil&gas industry since they contribute, at their level, to the exploitation of oil&gas reserves in very sensitive environments in a «sustainable» way 17
