The Nordplus/Nordlys Programme and Non-European Agreements In addition to the Erasmus bilateral agreements, foreign students can apply for exchange studies at the Department of Political Science through the Nordplus and Nordlys Programme or, if from a non-european country, through Bilateral Agreements at the central level. The Department is a member of the Nordplus Political Science Network, through which political science students at the following Nordic universities can apply to study the subject at Stockholm University: Aarhus Universitet Köbenhavns Universitet Syddansk Universitet Helsingfors Universitet Jyväskylä Universitet Lapplands Universitet, Rovaniemi Tampere Universitet Åbo Akademi Åbo Universitet (Turun Yliopisto) Vasa Universitet Islands Universitet Universitet i Bergen: Institutt for sammenliknende Politikk Institutt for Administration og Organisationsvitenskap Universitet i Oslo Universitet i Tromsö Even if your department/university is not part of the Nordplus Political Science Network or if you do not have political science as your major subject, as a student in a Nordic country you can apply to study political science as an exchange student through the Nordlys Programme. For further information on the application procedure contact the Exchange Coordinator / International Student Office at your home university. A number of non-european universities have signed Central Level Bilateral Agreements with Stockholm University, enabling non-european students to study at Stockholm University as exchange students for either one semester or an entire academic year. These agreements are non-subject specific, which means that students, once selected by their home universities, may apply for any subject / department at the university, provided they have the required qualifications for that subject. These agreements are administered by the Office for International Student Exchange at Stockholm University, not by the individual departments. Contact the Exchange
Coordinator/International Office at your university to find out whether they have a bilateral agreement with Stockholm University and, if so, how to proceed with your application. For further information, see: Studies outside an exchange programme If there is no valid exchange agreement between your home university and Stockholm University, you will have to apply as a regular student electronically through Information on studies at Stockholm University for international students can be found at Please note that the Department of Political Science cannot grant any exemptions from the general entrance requirements at Stockholm University. 5 Studying Political Science at Stockholm University Undergraduate Studies (1 st level) Undergraduate studies at the Department of Political Science consist of three levels to be taken in sequence: Political Science I (PS I), Political Science II (PS II) and Political Science III (PS III). Each level comprises 30 credits, which correspond to one semester of full-time studies. Each level is divided into course parts of 7.5 credits per part (the core courses/ kernfächer/corsi base); four course parts for PS I and PS II and three course parts for PS III, including a 15-credits Independent Research Project (thesis), see information on On PS II and PS III you may choose a sub-discipline, either in your choice of optional course or in your choice of essay work. Your choice in this respect may reflect either a focus on some central themes in political science or a broadening of your perspective within the discipline of political science. If you choose political science as the main subject in a Degree of Bachelor, you normally take 90 credits of political science as well as other subjects of your own choosing up to 180 credits. If you want to continue studying political science after a Degree of Bachelor, you may do so in our Master s or Ph.D. Programmes in Political Science. Master Studies (2 nd level) The Master s programme comprises 120 credits, i.e. two years of full-time studies. Within the programme there are specialisations which offers significant opportunities for specialised studies. The programme also offers opportunities for professional internships at different public authorities, companies and organisations. All of the specialisations lead to a Degree of Master of Political Science. For more information, please visit: second-level. Ph.D. Programme (3 rd Cycle) The Ph.D. programme comprises 240 credits, i.e. four years of full-time studies. The purpose of the programme is to provide researchers with the ability to independently plan and write scientific reports. Ph.D. students are offered deeper knowledge of political science and thorough training in research methods as well as insights into the problems of research in the field. The programme prepares students for work in society for which a comprehensive knowledge of political science is valuable, for example as researchers, teachers and experts. More information can be found on: statsvet.su.se/english/research/phd-studies.
Eligibility Who May Study Political Science? Political Science I Political Science I provides a broad introduction to political science an overview of central political concepts, ideas and ideologies; knowledge of important institutions and processes in Swedish politics and public administration; the relations and contexts of political phenomena through comparative studies of different political systems; fundamental knowledge of international politics. The student learns to independently collect and critically analyse information about politics and to argue by means of oral and written assignments. You are eligible to apply if you, in addition to the general requirements for admission to university studies, also meet the specific requirements for admission to Political Science I, which are: Social Studies/Civics A and English B with at least a grade of pass, or the equivalent (internationally recognised test of English proficiency, e.g. the computerised TOEFL-test (213), IELTS (6.0) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency). Incoming exchange students are required to meet the same English language requirements as regular students. We recommend exchange students to have a result of at least 550 points (paper-based test) or 213 points (computer-based test) on the TOELF-test. All exchange students that meet these criteria, regardless of previous studies in Political Science, are welcome to register for Political Science I. Students that have prior knowledge of Swedish can apply for courses in Swedish. Political Science II Political Science II provides a broader and deeper knowledge of certain aspects of the subjects studied within Political Science I, such as political science perspectives and approaches, methods and techniques and critical analysis of political phenomena. It also provides the opportunity for an independent research project. All students having completed Political Science I may register for Political Science II. Incoming exchange students must have previously completed political science courses roughly corresponding to the course parts on Political Science I in order to be able to study course parts on Political Science II. In addition to the criteria mentioned above, access to optional courses is subject to availability of places as determined by the Department of Political Science. Political Science III Political Science III provides a deeper knowledge of some areas within political science; various political science perspectives; knowledge of political science research problems and methods. In addition, there are a number of special courses entailing
specialisation and a relevant point of departure for the independent research work (thesis). Within the framework of a political science investigation, scientific methods and theories should be applied in order to elucidate empirical/theoretical problems within the field. Students who have completed Political Science I, 30 ECTS, and Political Science II, 30 ECTS, or the equivalent are eligible for studies on PS III. The number of places available on Political Science III is limited. Incoming exchange students are eligible for courses on Political Science III if they have passed courses at their home university corresponding to the core courses on Political Science I as well as the courses within the relevant subject area on Political Science II. Courses at Master s Level Exchange students who want to take courses at Master s level must have a Bachelor Degree in Political Science and be registered as a Master s student in Political Science at their home university. Study places in Studenthuset
The Academic Year and its semesters The academic year is divided into two twenty-week semesters: Autumn Semester (end of August/beginning of September to mid-january) and Spring Semester (mid-january to the beginning of June). A full-time student is expected to complete 30 credits per semester. The three undergraduate levels are divided into course parts. Most departments, including the Dept. of Political Science, expect students to complete these course parts in sequence. The number of credits constituting a course part is related to the estimated workload required: 1.5 credits is equivalent to one week of full-time study (40 hours). Hence, a course of 7.5 credits requires five weeks of full-time studies. At the Department of Political Science the semester is divided into 4 periods of 5 weeks each, corresponding to one course part of 7.5 credits.
Application procedure and deadlines Application If you are interested in studying at the Department of Political Science within one of the available exchange programmes and there is a valid agreement with your home university, please contact the Exchange Coordinator or the International Office at your home university for information on how to apply. If you are selected for exchange studies by the Exchange Coordinator/International Office, we will send you a link to our electronic application form. Nomination deadlines are: - 10 May for the academic year and the autumn semester - 10 October for the spring semester Application deadlines are: - 15 May for the academic year and the autumn semester - 15 October for the spring semester Eligibility Recommended academic qualifications as above. Please note that some courses may have additional qualification requirements. Exchange students who want to take courses at the Master s level must be registered as Master students in Political Science at their home university. You must meet the English proficiency requirements. Procedure after Selection Once you have been selected for exchange studies and your Coordinator / International Office has contacted us with your details, the Exchange Administrator will you the necessary information together with a link to our onlineapplication form. To confirm that you intend to participate in the exchange, fill in the application form electronically and submit it at the latest by May 15 for Autumn Semester or for the full academic year and October 15 for Spring Semester. After the online-application has been submitted and we have reviewed your application, you will be sent a Letter of Acceptance and other information from the Department of Political Science.
Student Housing The housing office will inform students via how to apply for student housing after the application deadline. Available student housing will be allocated through a lottery to those exchange students at the Department of Political Science who have applied on time. Enrolment at Stockholm University Enrolment at Stockholm University is compulsory for all students. Enrolment for exchange students takes place during the Orientation Days. Course registration Exchange students at the Department of Political Science Exchange students should send a transcript of records. Exchange students studying at the Department of Political Science for the entire academic year will receive information from the Exchange Coordinator about the course selection for the Spring Semester. Since the Department of Political Science will be your host department at Stockholm University, you will have to take the majority of your credits (3-4 courses per semester, or 22.5 to 30 ECTS credits) at our department. If there are no courses available for you at the Department of Political Science during a certain period, you may contact other departments at Stockholm University to enquire as to whether it is possible to study one of their courses instead. However, departments at Stockholm University are not obliged to accept exchange students from other departments at the university but do so only if there are places available in their courses and if the students have the necessary qualifications. Usually the Coordinators do not know until after the registration period at the start of the semester whether or not there will be places available for specific courses. Exchange students from other Departments Please note that the Department of Political Science can only accept exchange students from other departments if there are places available and if the students have the necessary qualifications (transcript of records is required). Recommended academic qualifications: see above.
