and Gas Project Goal: Understand industry needs and to identify new technologies that support industry across all phases of the oil & gas lifecycle Provide a base for the potential future development of EO Guidelines for the onshore oil & gas sector Prime Contractor: Hatfield (Canada, Southeast Asia, Southern Africa) RPS Group (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Middle East) Arup (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Middle East) C-CORE (Canada) SRC (Contact: Dr. Stanislaw Lewinski / stlewinski@cbk.waw.pl)

and Gas Meeting the challenges of onshore exploration and production, health and safety, and compliance with national and international regulations: Seismic Planning Surface Geology Mapping Subsidence Monitoring Environmental Monitoring Logistics and Infrastructure Emerging areas for oil and gas exploration and production: Canada Australia Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Kenya Papua New Guinea Peru Poland

and Gas Team s Geographic Coverage

and Gas Task 1: Industry Challenges and Geo-information Requirements What are the some the main operational challenges faced by the oil and gas sector throughout the lifecycle of an oil & gas project How do these challenges translate into specific geo-information needs? How do the challenges and requirements vary according to different geographic regions? What are the similarities and differences in requirements for seismic planning, environmental monitoring, logistics and infrastructure, etc.? Gathering of the challenges and requirements through : Expert review Direct Interviews Online Survey and OGEO Portal

and Gas Task 1: Industry Challenges and Geo-information Requirements Example Challenge: Understand vegetation patterns to identify areas of potentially poor source and receiver coupling (e.g. gravel, sand, and wet areas) in seismic survey planning Example component Geo-information requirements: Land cover Topography Water Quantity (Wet areas)

and Gas Task 2: Definition of Current EO Capabilities and Use Identification of mature EO-based information products that respond to the identified geoinformation needs Gap Analysis: What gaps exist between the information requirements and current EO capabilities now, and can these gaps be addressed over the next 5 years? Case study examples Covering different geographic regions Addressing all oil and gas activities that have been identified

and Gas Reduced costs Benefits to solutions (the ability to continue what they are doing, but by spending less) Increase production (Increase the total recoverable reserves from an existing asset) Reduce uncertainty (Improving the quality of information affecting exploration and production decisions) Accelerate production (Produce recoverable reserves quicker thereby improving the operators return on investment and minimising the discount effect) Reduce cycle time (the free up resources quicker such they can exploit the next asset sooner) Access to new reserves (the ability to exploit reserves that have previously been unreachable or unproduceable due to technical limitations)
