1 When videos are recorded using a cell phone or a tablet, the default quality level is set so high that the file size can end up being quite large. This can create problems when uploading these massive.mp4 files into Panopto or other streaming video sites. The use of compression software, like AVC, reduces the size of files so they can easily be uploaded File size of a raw 10 min cell phone/tablet video = 1.2 Gb 1.4 Gb Target file size for compressed 10 min video = 80 Mb 140 Mb (10 X smaller) Here is a link to a primer on video settings: Choosing the Proper Settings for Your Video Project Note: For people with iphones and Mac laptops, Apple does not allow you to navigate to a specific video file on your phone. You must sync your iphone with your computer and iphoto to gain access to the video files. These instructions are for downloading iphone/ipad videos into a Mac for compression. Note: If Any Video Converter Free, is not loaded on your computer, you can download it from the internet. Caution: As with a lot of free software, be careful when installing AVC-Free, turn off the extra downloads so they don t end up on your computer. Please contact Joe Lipari if you have questions. Transfer video from your iphone/ipad to your Mac Computer Your iphone/ipad and Mac must be paired in order for you to transfer your footage to the computer. Plug your device into your Mac using a USB cable. Note: In most cases you will need to put the video on the computer (desktop) as the conversion software may not allow you to drag a video from the phone s folder to the converter.

2 Open the conversion software: Open the Finder and Click Go then open the applications window. Click on Any Video Converter to open the software.

3 Any Video Converter (AVC) interface Load your video into the conversion software Drag the video from the desktop to the main window of AVC. Your video will show up in the main window.

4 Set the Output Folder Any Video Converter (AVC) for Mac Under the Output Location section Click on the drop down menu to choose a folder. Click Choose to select a location for the finished file. Your video will be placed in the location you select, so you can find it after it is done compressing.

5 Select Desktop Click Open to set the destination. Your video will be placed on the desktop after compressing. Confirm that Desktop is the Output Location.

6 Selecting Output Profile Click the Output Profile drop down menu. Select the Video Files icon. Scroll down and select: Customized MP4 Movie (*.mp4)

7 You can use the defaults settings of Customized MP4 Movie (*.mp4) and click Note: If you need a higher quality video the following instructions will help you adjust the settings to achieve a sharper image.

8 Settings to optimize video compression Click on the edit profile icon to access the Custom profile window. Video Options Audio Options Basic Settings Video Setting Start by clicking on Bit Rate. Select a Bit rate of 1500.

9 Click on video size setting icon to open the Customized Video Size Window. Enter 1280 x 720 and click the check box. Confirm Codec is set to x264 and Frame Rate is set to Auto. You will not need to change any of the Audio Settings. Click OK

10 Start Conversion Any Video Converter (AVC) for Mac Click Convert Now This starts the compression process. Note: This message may appear the first time you use the software. Allow the Caching to complete. If this process takes more than 5 minutes hit cancel. When the.mp4 video is done the folder will open on the desktop. A progress bar will let you know where you are in the process. You can now upload the smaller video to Panopto or copy it to a flash drive.

11 Before File Size: Uncompressed video file = 770 Mb After File Size: Compressed video file = 61.8 Mb By using this conversion process, you can compress a video down to 1/10 th its original size. This helps when you upload a video by creating a smaller file and taking less time to upload. Remove video from AVC and close the program
