1 Polished Concrete Floor - Restaurant Case Study: CS PC029 Shears Yard Restaurant: Polished Concrete Floors and Walls A building dating 1800s formally used by a rope and canvas manufacturer is the setting for a new ultra-modern restaurant. Shears Yard is the latest creation of the team behind Art Café Bar based in Leeds. Working with leading architect Toby Wallis, Skim Coat supplied the polished concrete floors and walls to create a cool, sleek, very modern looking restaurant. A polished concrete bar with a stainless steel counter completed the stylish modern concrete look. The bare light bulbs and retained exposed brickwork are the perfect background to create the mood for a great dining experience. Interior of the Shears Yard restaurant. 2 Polished Concrete Floor Restaurant Product Description When the directors of Arts Café Bar specified the polished concrete floor for Shears Yard the instructions was simple. The floor had to look like it had always been there, not fully polished but with a semi industrial look. The polished concrete floor also had to be stain resistant from wines and spirits and also resistant to hot fats from spilt food. The floor had to be easy to clean and maintain and also be slip resistant. Colour A cool grey colour hardener was selected for the dry shake topping that would be burnished into the concrete surface to create the polished concrete floor. Dry shake toppings not only colour and produce a burnished semi industrial look but also increase the abrasion resistance of the concrete floor. Substrate Preparation The existing timber floor had been removed revealing a concrete sub floor, after cutting out the channels for new pipework and electric points the sub floor was covered with a damp proof membrane to protect the new 100 mm concrete slab from rising moisture and to provide a slip membrane. Steel mesh A152 was specified as the concrete reinforcement. These steel mesh sheets were placed on 45mm plastic spacers ensuring the steel is central to the slab and tied together with wire. A flex foam isolation strip was fitted to all perimeters of the rooms and also to fixed points such as columns and pillars. This allows for expansion and contraction in the new concrete floor avoiding cracking and curling. The existing walls and surrounding areas were protected with thin gauge polythene. Page 2 of 6

3 The Polished Concrete Pour The concrete is placed into position by means of a concrete pump. This is a lorry fitted with pumping devices to pump the concrete in place where the concrete lorry cannot access. In total 20 cubic metres of ready mixed concrete was pumped and placed in around 90 minutes. These vehicles are normally required on site for around 4 hours and can pump on average 1000 m2 per day. The concrete is levelled using laser devices working to a fixed datum reference and by using traditional concrete floor screed methods. Attention to detail is what makes Skim Coat polished concrete floors spectacular. Throughout the process the concrete is re straightened and flattened to within a 3mm tolerance over a 3m straightedge. Following the application of colour hardener the concrete is then power floated using pans and blades and finished to a burnished appearance. The concrete slab is cut the following day creating joints for expansion and contraction. These joints are filled after curing with a mastic that complements the colour of the floor. The following day the floor is covered with a geotextile fabric and 3mm correx fire resistant sheets taped together until cured. This provides protection from other trades and allows further construction whilst the new concrete floor goes through a 28 day chemical curing process. The power floating process can take until midnight before final finishing is completed. This is dependent on temperature and humidity. Page 3 of 6

The poured concrete is then transformed into a spectacular polished concrete floor by repeated trowelling by our skilled craftsmen using a power float machine. Multiple applications with a hard trowel finish reproduce the effect of polished concrete with the natural shades of the polished cement and grey colours. Burnished polished concrete is available in almost any colour and custom colours can be made to specific client s needs. Burnished polished concrete involves the process where only the concrete surface is polished and no large aggregates are exposed. Using laser screeds large areas can be poured in one day. 5 Polished Concrete Walls Restaurant To complement the polished concrete floors Skim Coat supplied the polished concrete walls to the perimeter of the building and bar front. The existing brickwork was sandblasted and coated with an epoxy damp proof membrane prior to the application of Skim Coat micro polished concrete system. Page 5 of 6
