3 CHART 1 Gross consumption of natural gas by OECD region Billion cubic meters OECD Asia Oceania OECD Europe OECD Americas 0 May-13 Sep-13 Jan-14 May-14 Sep-14 Jan-15 May-15 Sep-15 Jan-16 May-16 Total OECD indigenous production of natural gas was 1.6% higher in May 2016 compared to May 2015, mainly driven by an increase in OECD Asia Oceania (+11.1% y-o-y 1 ) and OECD Europe (+5.2% y-o-y). Production in the OECD Americas remained broadly stable (+0.2% y-o-y) as the higher level of production (+9.6% y-o-y) experienced by Canada were offset by lower levels of production in the US and Mexico which fell by 0.9% and 12.9% y-o-y, respectively. Total OECD imports (entries) 2 of natural gas were 4.2% higher in the first five months of 2016 compared to the same period of The growth was driven by OECD Europe (+5.5% y-t-d 3 ) and the OECD Americas (+10.4% y-t-d), especially in Mexico where lower production and higher consumption resulted in a very strong increase in imports (+65.3% y-t-d). On the contrary imports in OECD Asia continued to be lower in May 2016 (-599 Mcm y-o-y). Total imports of LNG increased by a modest 0.8% on a y-o-y basis as the strong growth of the OECD Americas (+522 Mcm y-o-y) was offset by a decrease in OECD Europe (-378 Mcm y-o-y). Total OECD exports (exits) 2 of natural gas increased by 9.6% in May 2016 compared to May 2015 driven by the strong growth in OECD Asia Oceania (+77% y-o-y) and the OECD Americas (+20% y-o-y). The significant increase of exports in OECD Asia Oceania was driven by the increase of LNG exports from Australia (+1,729 Mcm y-o-y). Gross consumption of natural gas in total OECD increased by 5.4% in May 2016 compared to May 2015, driven by strong growth in the OECD Americas (+7.2% y-o-y) and OECD Europe (+7.0% y-o-y), which was offset by a decrease in OECD Asia Oceania (-5.8% y-o-y). Within OECD Europe, gross consumption in Germany (+27.0% y-o-y) and Ireland (+26.6% y-o-y) continued to show strong increases. 1. Year-on-year (y-o-y) change over corresponding month of previous year. 2. Transit volumes are included. Trade amounts include intra-regional trade. 3. Year-to-date (y-t-d) change over corresponding period (beginning of year to current month) of previous year. OECD/IEA, International Energy Agency

5 NOTES Please note that all IEA data are subject to the following Terms and Conditions found on the IEA s website: 1) ESTIMATED DATA Due to the absence of official data, the following data have been estimated: Chile April 2016 to May 2016 Israel January 2010 to May 2016 Netherlands May ) COUNTRY NOTES Australia Belgium Canada Prior to July 2015, total exports of natural gas are estimated by the administration, based on annual (July to June) and quarterly data. The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas from Australia. The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas from Australia. Most recent data on origins of imports and final destinations of exports of LNG are the best estimates from the Belgian Administration based on available preliminary data. There is a break in stocks for natural gas between December 2015 and January From January 2016 data onwards Statistics Canada is officially publishing data on stock levels. Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan), based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan, based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat. Chile Germany Iceland Ireland Israel Mexico Netherlands Chile is reporting stock levels of the country's LNG terminals as of January Therefore, there is a break in stock levels between December 2012 and January Until December 2013 German imports and exports of natural gas represent ultimate origins and destinations with partial transit. There is no natural gas data for Iceland, as there is neither production nor consumption. There is a break in stocks for natural gas between December 2013 and January As of January 2014, the Irish Administration changed the data source for production and stock levels. The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central Bureau of Statistics. Observed gross inland deliveries of natural gas from January 2013 onwards are estimated. Revisions are pending. The Netherlands are reporting stock levels and stock changes as of January For data prior to January 2015, indigenous production includes amounts coming from or going to stocks.
