1 Muskogee Public Schools Curriculum Map Course: Science Grade Level: pre-k Nine- 1 st Nine Physical 2 The child will investigate and describe objects that can be sorted in terms of physical properties. 2:1 Develop an awareness of the sensory attributes of objects according to taste, smell, hearing, touch, and sight. The student will identify sensory organs associated with each of the five senses. Suggested read aloud books: My Five Senses, I have five senses, Songs: Dr Jean s Five Senses Games: Five Sense sorting game The student will identify sensory characteristics through activities such as: Scent canisters, sound canisters/recording, feely box, tasting test sweet, sour, bitter, salt- I spy game). *Students will be assessed through oral discussions, teacher observation of students at science center and science notebook/journals. This assessment will be done at the end of each standard Science Processes and Inquiry 1 The child will investigate and experiment with objects to discover information. 1:1 Develops increasing abilities to classify, compare, and contrast objects, events and experiences. The students will sort objects by color, shape, size The students will compare small, medium, and large items The students will graph their findings and compare and contrast the class results.
2 1 st Nine Earth/Space 4 The student will investigate and observe the basic concepts of the Earth. 4:2 Develops an awareness of daily weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy, hot, warm, cold) The students will identify the daily weather and choose the correct weather term (sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy, hot, warm, cool, cold) Books: What s the weather, Wilbur the weather watcher Earth/Space 4 The student will investigate and observe the basic concepts of the Earth. 4:3 Develops an awareness of the four seasons (e.g., temperature, weather, appropriate clothing, changing leaves) The students will choose appropriate clothing for the weather bear. The students will identify and match the tree to its season. The students will have knowledge of the changing of the leaves on the trees for each season. Book: The leaves are falling one by one, Rain, The Cloud Book, The Snowy Day Science Processes and Inquiry 1 The child will investigate and experiment with objects to discover information. 1:4 Asks questions, makes predictions, and communicates observations orally and/or in drawings. 1:3 Participates in simple experiments to discover information The students will choose two colors and predict what color will be made after mixing two colors. The students will then mix two colors through paint, eye droppers, play dough, or other matter to mix colors. Students will experiment with color paddles. Suggested books: Mouse Paint, Little Blue and Little Yellow. Students will make predictions and communicate observation through drawings in their science notebook/journal.
3 2 nd Nine Life Science 3 The child will observe and investigate plants and animals 3:1 Develops an awareness of what plants need for growth The students will observe and describe plants, fruits and seeds through activities such as identifying parts of a plant (roots, stems, leaves and flowers), weighing and measuring flowers, pumpkins, apples; planting seeds and documenting their growth in notebooks/journals; investigate what plants need to survive (e.g. light, water, air, food) Books: Pumpkin Pumpkin, Pumpkin Patch, Apples and Pumpkin, Apple Tree Season of Arnold s Apple Tree, From Bud to Blossom Physical 2 The child will investigate and describe objects that can be sorted in terms of physical properties. 2:2 Develop awareness of the properties of some objects (e.g., float-sink, heavylight, rough-smooth, hard-soft, solidliquids, magnetic-non magnetic) The students will predict items that will sink and float. Then with the use of a water table will test their theory and record their findings through drawings. The students will use a balance scale to determine if classroom objects are heavy/light. Students will sort & classify objects by rough, smooth, hard, soft with Lakeshore science kit. Solid-liquid ideas: jello, ice cube melting, ice cream, etc. Students will test classroom objects to determine if the object is magnetic. Book: Mystery of Magnets, What can magnets do, Water, Soft and Hard: Opposite Book, Wet World, Water Physical 2 The child will investigate and describe 2:3 Observes and describes how objects The students will manipulate nuts and bolts (turn), screwdrivers and screws
4 2 nd Nine objects that can be sorted in terms of physical properties. move (e.g., slide, turn, twirl, roll) (twist), solid shapes--cube, cylinder, sphere--(slide, roll), ramps and other items to discover how objects move. The students will sort objects by movement/non-movement after exploring with a straw which items move when blowing through the straw. Suggested website: Display Curious George video clips of how objects move on promethean board. Science Processes and Inquiry 1 The child will investigate and experiment with objects to discover information. 1:2 Selects and becomes familiar with simple scientific tools (e.g., magnifying glass, magnet and microscope) The students will use magnifying glasses to look at items and compare and contrast the different ways they look. The students will use a magnet wand to search the room and identify different items that are magnetic. These can be recorded by drawing and saved in a Science notebook. The students will become familiar with a microscope by investigate insect slides using the GeoSafari Talking Microscope
5 3 rd Nine Earth/Space 4 The child will investigate and observe the basic concepts of the Earth. 4:4 Observes and participates in a variety of activities related to preserving the environment. The students will participate in a recycling program in the classroom. Sorting the Capri-sun packages to send off for money for the school, choosing what items go into the paper bin, etc. Suggested website: Earth day page Students help recycle by sorting paper, plastic and cans. Life Science 3 The child will observe and investigate plants and animals 3:3 Demonstrate an interest and respect for plant and animal life around them. The students will examine animal blubber (lard in two baggies and let children stick their hand in between and put in cold water) children will discuss how polar bears live in the cold weather. Suggested books: Polar Bears, Bears The students will plant flowers in school garden and take care of them. Suggested books: Flowers, Gardens, Planting a Rainbow Science Processes and Inquiry 1 The child will investigate and experiment with objects to discover information. 1:5 Explores cause and effect The students will explore cause and effect through a variety of experiments. During spring weather, students will construct a kite and experiment with flying it in windy versus non-windy conditions. Students will explore will explore cause and effect by using ramps. They will use inquiry skills to question how to make objects roll faster, slower, etc. Book: Motion: Push & Pull

7 4 th Nine Life science 3 The child will observe and investigate plants and animals. 3:2 Demonstrates a beginning awareness of the changes that plants and animals go through during their life. 3:3 Demonstrates an interest and respect for the plant and animal life around them. The students will observe the changing life cycle of a butterfly. Students will observe live caterpillars as they make their cocoon and then emerge as butterflies. They will sequence the life cycle of a butterfly with puzzles and stamps with stages of a butterfly. Suggested books: The very hungry caterpillar, Caterpillars, Butterflies, Munch, Munch, Munch Earth/Space 4 The child will investigate and observe the basic concepts of the Earth. 4:1 Develops an awareness of the properties of common earth materials (e.g., soil, rocks, water) The students will categorize rocks by size, color, and texture. The students will compare and contrast different types of soil (sand, dirt, mud) Book: Rocks: Hard, Soft, Smooth, Rough The students will explore the different stages water goes through when freezing and melting. Life Science 3 The child will observe and investigate plants and animals. 3:2 Demonstrates a beginning awareness of the changes that plants and animals go through during their life (seed/plant, egg/chicken) The students will examine the life cycle of a chicken by using an incubator in the classroom. The students will put life cycle stamps in order at the science center. The students will explore life cycle puzzles. Suggested books: The tiny seed, Chicken(Life Cycles), How Plants grow, 4 th Nine
8 Life Science 3 The child will observe and investigate plants and animals. 3:1 Develops an awareness of what various plants and animals need for growth The students will plant a seed and watch its growth. They will use inquiry skills to determine which environment seeds/plants grow best. (Ex.
