2 LLE Welcome In the light of a shaky global economy, many are calling for re-localization. They are seeking new solutions to develop the local community in a globalized world. Which cases can we find at the Nordic arena? What instruments are available to support the work of local actors in the development of the local economy? What role can the public play to support these types of initiatives? The meeting will help to disseminate and discuss existing and new solutions. The Living Local Economies conference is designed for stakeholders at all different levels of the innovation system. The organisers are the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), the Swedish Ministry for Rural Affairs and the network Lokalekonomerna in cooperation with Hela Sverige ska leva, Inlandsinnovation AB and Fjällbete. 3 Location LLE The Local Living Economies conference will be held at Holiday Club in Åre, Sweden. Åre is located in the geographical middle west of Sweden (and north in terms of population). It is known as a paradise for outdoors sports, especially Alpine skiing. Holiday Club is located by the lake and the train station in Åre. There are daily night trains to Åre from Stockholm and Gothenburg. Please visit for further information about trains. The closest airports are Åre Östersund Airport located 80 kilometres away and Trondheim Airport, Værnes in Norway 130 kilometres away from Åre. There are frequent flights and transfers. 5 Presentations LLE Moderator & Facilitator Moderator: Thomas Norrby, rural development consultant at the Swedish Agricultural University, engaged in local economic development since more than 20 years, member of the Board of the Swedish Network for Rural Development and active in the thematic working group on rural funding. Facilitator: Hillevi Helmfrid, consultant, Sustainable Development Process and Perspectives, focuses on the meeting between different perspectives as a pathway to deeper understanding as well as action towards a more sustainable society. She does so through developing projects and creative workshops. She is also the author of a several reports about Peak Oil, perceptions of nature, local sustainability, sustainable lifestyle, urban agriculture, etc. Lecturers and debaters Helena Norberg-Hodge, Director of International Society for Ecology and Culture and author of Ancient Futures. Is going to talk about the personal, social, ecological and economic benefits of shifting from global to local economic development. David Korten, economist, author, former Professor of the Harvard Business School and is now board member of the American Business Alliance for Living Local Economies. Will send his reflections on the theme of the conference from the US. Jörgen Andersson, farmer and Social Entrepreneur from Åre, Sweden, with many years of experience in hands-on work to strengthen the local economy. The message from Andersson is that a district can consider themselves as a kind of corporate group and that the earnings and balance sheets are up to the people living in the district. That local economy requires local mangement which in turn requires local democracy. Steen Møller, founder of the self-sufficient eco-village Friland in Denmark. Steen Møller will talk about Frilands concept to strengthen the local economy by minimizing debt and promoting local businesses. 5

6 LLE Presentations Reidar Almås, Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Centre for Rural Research, is well known for his research in rural sociology and regional policy. Almås will give some perspectives from his research on food production clusters in Norway. Anna Karlsdottir, Assistant professor, Department of geography and tourism studies, University of Iceland. Karlsdottir will give perspectives from her reserarch on multifunctionality in Icelandic agriculture, the new food regime and various other regional development projects she has been involved with. Anna Haraldson Jensen, project manager and active member of a community company from Skåne, Sweden. Will share some of the lessons learned as a coorganiser of the Swedish annual conference Lokalekonomidagarna. Leo Padazakos, an IT and Telecom entrepreneur with several successful companies and business projects behind him. He is the founder of the Local Investment Company concept which is now spreading in Sweden. Ulla Herlitz, cultural geographer and project manager at the Swedish rural development NGO Hela Sverige ska leva. Has written handbooks in local financing and is now working to establish microfunds for local development. 6

Annika Laurén from the cooperative Swedish bank Ekobanken Fredrik Karlström, Minister for Enterprise, Åland. René Kusier from the Danish Rural Network Unit Organisers Ylva Lundkvist, conference coordinator at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the division of Rural Development. Has several years of experience in organizing the conference Lokalekonomidagarna ( and is very interested in local currencies. Ann Bredenfeldt, assistant at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the division of Rural Development. Maria Ahlsved, special advicer at the Ministry for Rural Affairs with the Rural Development Programme. 7

8 LLE Study visit After the conference you get the possibility to make a study visit. Seven minutes in the cable car and you are at 1274 metres above sea level with tens of kilometres view of the beautiful mountains and lakes surrounding you. The cable car makes mount Åreskutan the easiest high mountain to access in Sweden. Up on the top we are going to have fika (coffee and cinnamon bun), watch sheep grazing and continue a deeper conversation with the local, social and financial entrepreneurs from Fjällbete and Åre lokalkapital AB.
