4 Have you recently added a class to your My Courses Web site? This handout introduces basic features of SharePoint s My Courses to help you get started. You will use two user interface elements of SharePoint sites that you may not be familiar with: the Quick Launch bar and the list toolbar. The Quick Launch bar contains hyperlinks to specific pages in your course Web site. The list toolbar provides hyperlinks to pages that contain forms for adding and editing items in the lists, libraries, and discussion board. List toolbar Quick Launch bar 2
5 Manage information My Courses sites are great for managing course material such as assignments, homework, course calendar, student rosters, Web links, discussions, and announcements. Library A library is a location where you can create, collect, update, and manage your files. Each library displays a list of files and information about the files. Libraries can be customized to handle specific types of files; for example, pictures, video or other types of media. The difference being the type of information displayed in the columns or how the information is handled by your students. Below are examples of the libraries you will find in your course. Document Library My Courses provides your class with file storage and retrieval. Your students can easily locate assignments and submit their work for grading or locate a syllabus to print. The Document Library is a repository of information that you share with your students. 3
6 Media Library The Media Library provides a simple way to share and organize digital content such as PowerPoint, graphic, video, and music files. List A list is a collection of information that you share with your students. For example, you can create a list of assignments and include due dates and the point or percentage value. You can post a list of website you want your students to visit and then create discussion topics based on that material. Below are examples of the lists you will find in your course. Assignments Use the Assignments list to give your students a list of assignments and due dates for planning purposes. 4
7 Student Roster The Student Roster provides contact information for the students assigned to your class. Use the roster to communicate with your class. Web Links The Web Links page is a list for posting hyperlinks to Web pages of interest to your class. You can use this list to supplement your textbook material with examples and additional online information. 5
8 Announcements Use the announcements list to post news, status, and other short bits of information you want to share with your class. You can set expiration dates for announcements. Tasks Use the Tasks list to display projects and specify their due date, priority, and indicate its status and progress. You can view all tasks or a selection of tasks. 6
9 Discussion board The discussion board provides a forum for discussing course material or other topics of interest. is a brief introduction to SharePoint. SharePoint is Microsoft technology that allows an organization to host intranet based webpages. It enables the sharing of Microsoft Office documents between its users. My Courses is a customized website developed to help you manage your course by facilitating collaboration and communication. We will be discussing My Courses in more detail over the coming weeks. You will be asked to evaluate the different features of My Courses to determine if further development is required and the overall practicality of the product. NOTES: 7
