2 02 03 Energetic Conscious of tradition Waste is a valuable source of energy. The energy from waste has been recycled in the plants of the EEW Energy from Waste Group (EEW) for more than 40 years now and used to generate environmentally friendly power, district heating and process steam. At the same time thermal waste recycling is a supporting pillar of a modern, sustainable waste-disposal economy. EEW guarantees this to its partners and customers. For this reason EEW develops, constructs and runs wasteincineration plants of a high technical and ecological standard and thereby makes an important contribution to the environment and to climate protection. The industrial thermal power station at Andernach runs on alternative fuels with additional gas-fired back-up and peak load boilers. The energy produced in the form of process steam and heating steam as well as electricity delivers exclusively to the tin-plate factory belonging to ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH in Andernach 365 days a year. This plant is the only one in Germany and at the same time the world s largest plant for the manufacture of so-called packaging steel (tin-plate). When the Andernach industrial thermal power plant was commissioned at the end of 2008, the old power station at the Andernach location which was operated by ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH was de-commissioned. The Andernach thermal power plant recycles up to 140,000 tons of alternative fuels per year as well as up to 8,000 tons of waste rolling oil and a maximum of 7,500 tons of sludge from production at ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein. The alternative fuel is a specially processed form of household, commercial and industrial waste with a defined specification and a significantly higher calorific value than traditional household waste.

4 06 07 Residual waste turns into energy Every week several thousand tons of waste are transported to EEW s Andernach thermal power plant where it is stored in the waste bunker. Around 3,500 tons of of waste can be stored in this bunker, and this ensures that operation is continuous even at the weekend or on official holidays. The mechanical processing of the household, commercial and industrial waste creates a homogeneous mix. This is an essential prerequisite for even incineration maintaining an average calorific value of around 13,000 kilojoules per kilogram. An automated crane system is used to keep the discharge area in the bunker clear, to mix the waste and feed the boiler. To ensure that no smells can escape into the air a slight underpressure is maintained in the RDF bunker. This is created by suctioning air from the RDF bunker for purposes of combustion. The prepared RDF is transferred from the bunker via the feed hopper to the incineration grate. Once ignited the RDF automatically continues to burn. The fire has a temperature of more than 1,000 C. With this heat energy around 65 tons of steam per hour are produced in the RDF boiler s heat pipes. This steam is directed to the steam turbine which is connected to a generator. There the steam drives the turbine with a pressure of 68 bar and a maximum temperature of 523 C. This is how electrical power is generated which is then fed into the grid at ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH. After the steam has been used to generate electricity in the high-pressure part of the steam turbine, it is fed into the ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein s works grid or used to produce further electricity in the connected condenser unit. Operating the Andernach thermal power plant saves around 46 million litres of heating oil for energy production.
5 08 09 Environment protection right from the start Environmental protection begins at the furnace-burning stage. Pollutants contained in the RDF, such as dioxins and furans, must be fully destroyed. This is ensured by maintaining a minimum temperature of 850 C. At the same time nitrogen oxide is reduced. By adding carbamide the nitrogen oxides present are converted to environmentally neutral nitrogen and water. The flue gases leave the furnace at a temperature of 180 C and then undergo several further cleansing stages. Further pollutants such as dust, heavy metals and acidic components (HCI, HF, SO 2 ) are reduced to a minimum here. No chance for pollutants First hydrated lime is injected into the flue gas to make contact with it after the boiler. Then the flue gas flows through a fluidized reactor in which it is thoroughly mixed with recirculate fed back from the bag filter. The recirculate is moistened before being fed into the fluidized reactor which significantly increases the reactivity of the hydrated lime and the recirculate, and cools the flue gas down to an optimum operating temperature of around 145 C. The hydrated lime combines with the acidic components in the flue gas such as chlorine and sulphur. Next hearth furnace coke is added to the gas to bind heavy metals as well as dioxins and furans. The solids thus formed are deposited together with the flue ash on the hoses of the following bag filter and there they form an absorbent layer. The deposits are removed at regular intervals by means of jets of compressed air. Then, with the help of suction extraction, the purified flue gas leaves the 60 metre high chimney. What remains is slag, flue ash and filtration dust. The slag is recovered and is used for roads and in the construction of waste dumps. The flue ashes and filtration dust, by contrast, are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and stored in mines as backfill.
6 10 11 Strict specification Our Environmental Contribution Thermal waste recycling is currently the most environment-friendly form of waste disposal. By using waste as fuel, emissions of carbon dioxide are reduced in the Andernach plant alone by some 33,000 tons a year - compared with power production in conventional brown coal-fired power plants.
