1 Alfama Alfama is one of the oldest districts in Lisbon. It is the home of the Popular Saints festivals. At the Portas do Sol end there are plenty of restaurants and cafés and also a beautiful Viewing Point. Fado is always to be heard in Alfama, and this can be confirmed if you visit the renowned Museum of Fado. Every Tuesday and Saturday Alfama holds the famous Feira da Ladra flea market, where all sorts of second-hand goods are bought and sold. Avenida da Liberdade Whether it s because of its size, its history or its strategic location, the fact is that Avenida da Liberdade is an amazing place. Here you can find the biggest and most expensive international brands, luxury hotels and sophisticated office buildings. Bairro Alto Although still inhabited by many ordinary folk, this district has the densest concentration of bars and restaurants in Lisbon, with something for everyone, catering to all tastes and wallets. Many of the traditional Fado houses can also be found here. Baixa Chiado This has become the favourite spot for Lisbon society. It is one of the most sought-after areas of the city and probably the place most visited by tourists. This area of the city oozes life and vitality. Lisbon Casino Inaugurated on 19th April 2006, Lisbon Casino is located right by the River Tagus, right in the heart of Parque das Nações. Opening Times: Sunday to Thursday from 15h to 03h00. Fridays, Saturdays and Day before a Public Holiday from 16h to 04h00 Price: Free Entry Location: By the River in Parque das Nações São Jorge Castle Dominating the city from the top of one of the highest hills in Lisbon, it is the city s most symbolic and most frequently visited monument. 2 Convento do Carmo The Convent, which was once Lisbon s main Gothic church, and whose grandeur and monumentality rivalled that of Lisbon Cathedral, was turned to rubble during the earthquake of It was never rebuilt, and it has become one of the greatest testaments to the disaster which can still be seen today. The Convent ruins currently house the Carmo Archaeological Museum. Cristo Rei It is located at an altitude of 113 metres above the level of the River Tagus. The monument is the biggest tourist attraction in the district of Almada, after the famous beaches along Costa da Caparica. This monument is the best viewing point looking out towards the city of Lisbon, offering an amazing view over the capital and over the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. Tram 28 Tram 28 is a highlight of any trip to Lisbon, and one of the best ways of getting to know the city. Look through the windows of this quaint method of transport and admire all the historical and natural heritage Lisbon has to offer. It is an extremely interesting and beautiful route. Approximately every 15 minutes, a tram sets off on the route which takes about 50 minutes to complete. Tickets cost 2.85 per trip. Rossio Station In the neo-manueline style, Rossio railway station is an amazing monument which stands between Praça do Rossio and Restauradores. It was designed by the architect José Luís Monteiro. The eight doorways match the windows and the incredibly ornate clock situated at the top of the façade. Rossio station is interesting, insofar as the boarding platforms are located about 30 metres above the main entrance. Santa Justa Elevator From the top of the elevator, 45 metres up, you can see the entire downtown Baixa are of Lisbon and São Jorge Castle. Located right in the heart of the Pombaline style centre of Lisbon, the Santa Justa Elevator is a highlight of Portugal s capital, and a must-see for any tourist. Opening Times: from 07h00 to 22h00 Price: 2 Trips: 5 Belém Custard Tart Factory Of all Portuguese confectionary, these tarts are some of the most popular specialities. Although many cafés and pastry shops sell custard tarts, the original recipe is a secret held exclusively by the Belém Custard Tart Factory in Lisbon. Here they are traditionally eaten still warm, sprinkled with cinnamon and icing sugar. 3 Estrela Garden The Basilica is a Catholic temple and former convent of Carmelite nuns located in the city of Lisbon. This huge domed church stands on top of a hill in Lisbon s west end, and is one of the city s main landmarks. It houses the Sala do Presépio nativity scene, a marble room with a display of over 500 terracotta and cork figurines. São Pedro de Alcântara Viewing Point If you come up from Restauradores and use the traditional Glória Elevator (3.60 for two trips), this Viewing Point is lies close to one of the many entries to Bairro Alto. From here you can get a beautiful view over the eastern side of Lisbon, particularly the picturesque neighbourhoods of Graça and São Vicente de Fora and the São Jorge Castle. Jerónimos Monastery Classified as a world heritage site by Unesco, this is an impressive memorial to Portugal s glorious maritime feats. Price: 7 National Tile Museum The Portuguese turned tile decoration into an artform. As a result, the building the former Mosteiro da Madre Deus and the calibre of the typically Portuguese exhibition make a visit to the museum very worthwhile. 4 Monument to the Discoveries This incredible building in the shape of a caravel depicts Infante D. Henrique leading 32 great figures from the Age of the Discoveries. At its base is a giant wind rose. 50m up, from the top of the monument you can get another view over Lisbon. You can get there by several means: City buses: 728 Santa Apolónia Metro and train station Eduardo VII Park This is one of Lisbon s most iconic spaces. Located along the visual extension of Avenida da Liberdade, this park offers a superb panoramic view over the city. At the top end of the park is a monumental viewing point, and at its edge is the famous square with the magnificent monument in the centre in honour of the Marquis of Pombal, the man who headed up the rebuilding of Lisbon following the earthquake of de Abril bridge The Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, also known as the Bridge over the Tagus, was inaugurated in 1966 under the name Ponte Salazar, in memory of the dictator who ordered its construction. Years later, its name was changed in homage to the 'Carnation Revolution' which took place on 25th April This bridge is very similar to San Francisco s Golden Gate Bridge. It measures km and stretches from Alcântara to Almada, on the south bank of the river. Vasco da Gama bridge Ponte Vasco da Gama is Europe s longest bridge, measuring 17.2 km, 10 of which span the River Tagus. It was inaugurated on 4th April Located close to Parque das Nações (the venue which hosted Expo 98), it was named in the same year in which we commemorated the 5th Centenary of Vasco da Gama s arrival in India.

5 LISBOA Praça do Comércio More commonly known as Terreiro do Paço, this square in Lisbon s Baixa downtown district right by the River Tagus was the location of the palace of the kings of Portugal for around two hundred years. It is one of the largest squares in Europe, with an area of around 36,000 m². It is the centre of the city of Lisbon, as well as its main square. Rua Augusta This is a famous street in Lisbon s Baixa area, which starts at the famous Triumphal Arch and connects Praça do Comércio to Praça do Rossio. It is densely populated with various different shops on either side, many of them major international brands. It was pedestrianised in the late 80s, and is a favourite spot for street artists, craft stalls and street vendors. Rua do Ouro (Gold Street) and Rua da Prata (Silver Street) run parallel to this street. Lisbon Cathedral With a history which could be mistaken for the history of the city itself, this is one of Lisbon s most important religious buildings. Cable Cars at Parque das Nações The trip is a little over one km long, and it is unforgettable.
