SOMETHING TO CHEW ON THE DEBATE THE HEALTHY EATING DEBATE In England, a growing number of children are now classified as obese, with a further 20 25% overweight. If current trends continue then by 2025, 47% of males and 36% of females are estimated to be obese. Tackling obesity is, quite rightly, high on both the Government s and the Media s agenda. Evidence proves that these areas can be positively impacted by sports organisations and their community programmes.
TO CHEW ON AN INTRODUCTION SOMETHING TO CHEW ON Premiership Rugby has formed a partnership with The Food Standards Agency to educate young people about food, nutrition and getting active as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Rugby s diversity makes it the perfect vehicle to drive a health and activity led initiative; as a sport rugby provides playing opportunities and role models of all shapes and sizes to children. The Something to Chew On programme uses an interactive approach to teaching children about keeping healthy, and involves parents so that learnings can be reinforced in the home. Topics include diet and health, food safety, consumer awareness and food preparation. As well as classroom sessions, there are practical sessions that cover rugby, fitness and controlling body movement to motivate children to be active. The programme targets non-traditional rugby areas and schools which have little or no rugby activities, with a target of 60% of the participating schools being locked into the top 20% of IMD ratings.
Something to Chew On is designed to: Improve young people's understanding of what constitutes healthy eating and a healthy diet Increase young people's knowledge of food safety Increase young people's uptake of physical activity Provide sustainability through teacher training and provision of equipment Fit in with the current school curriculum The programme is delivered as follows: Tag Rugby Coaching and Health Education Programme: a five-week dual coaching and health education coaching programme delivered to primary schools. Each session lasts two hours and contains one hour of healthy eating education and one hour of coaching activity. Teacher Coach Education Programme: two teachers at each participating school receive an Introduction to Tag Rugby coaching induction session.
SOMETHING TO CHEW ON PROGRAMME BENEFITS SUSTAINABLE BENEFITS In line with the national agenda to tackle obesity and the Every Child Matters Agenda, the local need to educate children about healthy eating and the benefits of physical activity is paramount. Something to Chew on is cost effective and interactive approach, fits in with the PE curriculum and helps schools deliver against educational objectives in addition to being enjoyable for pupils and teachers. Designed as a sustainable programme to lead to improved health outcomes and a greater understanding of healthy eating and physical activity, the programme has already been proved to have a lasting effect on the children taking part. Evaluation is built into the design and development of the programme and provides teachers with the coaching, skills and resource pack to draw on the learning following the end of the programme. Feedback from teachers involved in the programme: The STCO programme improved understanding of healthy eating and his lunch box now contains several pieces of fruit every day Some really vulnerable children with weight issues are now participating in clubs which is fantastic! It was super. I've looked back at it and used it in the after school club in my own time to support that. It was nice to see the resources that he d used in there already, so if another year group was doing healthy eating we can recall and see if we could adapt it to what they re doing. "Still 18 months down the line the children still talk about it and there aren t many things that children talk about from some time ago, 18 months is a lifetime for them and for them to still be talking about it, it must have made an impact." We have a Healthy Schools certificate so it tied in with that and with the PE because it was a sport I couldn t coach. It widens our choice of PE and sits in with the science, the healthy eating side.
SOMETHING TO CHEW ON PILOT RESULTS FROM THE PILOT The programme was successfully piloted in season 2008/2009: Healthy eating and food choices 100% of the teachers thought that the programme created an awareness of healthy eating amongst the children 90% of teachers thought that the students attitudes towards foods changed for the better 65% of the children have eaten less junk food for lunch (crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks) Physical activity 100% of teachers thought that students attitudes towards exercise changed for the better 76% of the children have exercised more often after the programme 84% of children felt more confident in working as part of a team 56% of children have taken part in new sporting activities in or out of school 80% of teachers felt the resource pack was a useful resource for future lesson plans 93% of teachers felt the programme was useful in helping them deliver the educational objectives against the PE curriculum 09/10 evaluation of STCO Project across the 12 Premiership Clubs and Bristol
SOMETHING TO CHEW ON RUGBY ABOUT PREMIERSHIP RUGBY Premiership Rugby is the umbrella organisation representing the twelve professional rugby union clubs in England. It was formed by those clubs to act as a central body to manage the elite club rugby game. The Premiership was created in 1997 and has seen significant growth in both attendance and television audiences over its 10 year span, with 75,000 supporters attending Guinness Premiership games every week, 2 million watching on TV per weekend and 7 million reading about it in the press. Premiership Rugby has over 150 private and public sector community partners and runs programmes in the grassroots, health, education and social inclusion areas across its network of clubs. 60 full time Community Development Officers, 600 volunteers and players deliver over 150,000 man hours of community work per annum. The programmes utilise Premieshipr Rugby s unique assets, the power of its brands, facilities, proven delivery infrastructure and of course the players as ambassadors and role models to enthuse and inspire in key focus areas..
