Inventor Tutorial 1 : Casing Design (press / vacuum forming) By the end of this exercise you will be able to Set up a new Project in Autodesk Inventor Sketch complex 2D shapes using basic sketch functions Apply dimensional constraints using General Dimension tool Use the Extrude, Shell and Fillet features Use attraction points to help you sketch Use the As Material feature to render a design Task One to set up a new Project folder The first task when starting a new project in Autodesk Inventor is to set up a new project. To do this open Inventor > go to File > New > Projects > New This will open the Inventor project wizard Now follow the step by step instructions to create a New Single User Project > in Project File change Name to casing design > in Project (Workspace) Folder, browse to find your homespace > choose Make New Folder > create new folder named casing design > OK You will now be back in the first dialogue box the folder casing design should now appear in your list of Inventor projects > click Apply > Done All the work you do on the casing design project will now save directly to the new folder that you have created. You are now ready to create a design for the top casing To do this go to File > New > select Standard.ipt > click OK The standard design pane should now appear ready for you to create your new part. 1
Useful Keyboard Shortcuts : Manipulating and moving around the model are important when solid modeling. There are several useful keyboard shortcuts in Inventor that are worth getting to know. To create the 2D sketch Use the Line tool to draw a line approximately 40 mm long (you will see dimensions appear at the bottom of the screen) Click once with the LH mouse button to start twice to finish. Use the General Dimension tool to make the line exactly 40mm long > click on the line with the LH mouse button held down and drag to create dimension > single click on the dimension to edit > click green tick to action This line is going to provide a starting point for the construction of the curved outline. Use the Centre point arc tool to create the two arcs shown on the right. This may take a bit of practice but you have a multiple undo tool at the top of the screen (or Ctrl Z) if it s not quite right first time! Now use the Tangent arc tool to close the shape. I may look a little odd at this stage but don t worry RH mouse click and choose Done to complete the sketch. 2
To tidy up the sketch RH click anywhere on the design screen > choose Create Constraint > Tangent Now click on each pair of curves in turn to create a tangent constraint between them. You should now have a smooth kidney bean shape. To complete the sketching stage, RH click and choose Finish Sketch This will exit sketch mode and you are now ready to create a 3D feature. You should now see the Part Feature panel at the LH side of the screen. Click F6 to go to an Isometric view and choose Extrude You will see the Extrude dialogue box This box allows you to control all aspects of the 3D extrusion Because you have only created one sketch this will be the default Profile Also by default, Output is set to Solid Extents is set to Distance Join (add material) is highlighted Above workplane is highlighted Enter a height of 12mm Because the design is for a vacuum form casing, it will need a draft angle > click on the More tab and enter a Taper value of 6 Click OK 3
You are now ready to add some more 3D features to the top face Tumble the model (F4 and LH mouse button) Click on the top face it should turn red to show that it has been selected click on the Sketch icon at the top of the screen. This will re-open the sketch interface click on the Look at icon and choose the top face You will now be looking directly onto the top face. Use the sketch tools as you did for the initial shape to create a profile for a raised area (switch panel) on the top surface as shown on the right. When you are happy with the sketch - RH click > Done > RH click > Finish Sketch to take you back into the 3D feature interface. Tumble the model (F4 & LH mouse button) until you can see the top face in a 3D view Choose Extrude This time, you will need to select the Profile to be extruded > click on Profile and select the sketch you have just created it should turn red. Modify the Distance to 4mm Click OK 4
You can now add another 3D feature rounded edges using the Fillet tool To do this > select Fillet > change the Radius to 2mm > select the edges that you want to round > OK Your model should now look like the one below. You are now ready to shell out the model. To do this, tumble the model so that you can see the underside. Select the bottom face it should turn red. Choose Shell from the Part Features panel Enter a thickness of 1.5mm > Click OK The final task is to put 3 holes in the top surface for the membrane switches. Tumble the model so that you can see the top face. Click on the top face and choose Sketch from the tool bar at the top of the page to take you back into the 2D sketch mode. Click on the Look at icon and select the top face. You should now be looking directly onto the top face 5
Use the Centre point circle tool to create three 8mm diameter circles as shown. Note: you need only dimension the first one of them and then use RH click Done > RH click > Create Constraint > Equal to make them all the same. To create the holes > RH click Done > RH click > Finish Sketch > tumble the model - Choose Extrude With Profile checked select each hole in turn holding down the Shift key to group them Choose Cut Change Extent to Next (this will then cut through only as far as the next (or inside) surface Click OK Your design for the top casing is now complete. You might want to try out the different default rendered finishes available by clicking on the As Material tab at the top RH side of the screen. File > Save to save the finished part 6
The design of your top casing is now complete can you work out how to use Autodesk Inventor to design the lower half to be an exact match as shown below? As a clue think about your initial sketch for the top casing and how you extruded it above the workplane.! What would happen if you copied the sketch to the clipboard opened a new Inventor part pasted the sketch and extruded it below the workplane? Give it a try. 7
