If yu re using this hand-ut n a shared r public cmputer, remember t: Lg n using a strng passwrd : ne that includes upper and lwer case letters, numbers, and isn t smething that smene else culd guess. Take a lk at the cmputer in frnt f yu. Is it a desktp cmputer, with separate parts? Or is it a laptp, with everything built int ne? b. c. Laptps have a built-in screen and keybard. Instead f a muse, they have a trackpad. Find ut mre n page 4. Tablet cmputers dn t have a keybard, muse r trackpad. Instead yu tap and drag yur fingers n a tuch-sensitive screen. The desktp is the screen that yu see when yu have nt gt any flders r files pen. On yur desktp are shrtcuts yu can click t g straight t files r prgrams. There is als a recycle bin, where yu can put files yu n lnger want. At the bttm left are buttns yu can click t access prgrams and files. Yu can prbably see: 5. Turning the cmputer ff is a little different: Hld yur muse and mve it s that the cursr arrw mves dwn t the Windws Start buttn fr Windws 7 r fr Windws 8 in the bttm left-hand crner f yur screen. Left click yur muse (press the left-hand buttn) s that the Windws Start menu pps up. Left click either n the pwer symbl r n the little arrw next t the lck symbl and then n Shut dwn. The Windws Start buttn 7 r fr Windws 8. fr Windws A buttn t launch Internet Explrer, a prgram that lets yu brwse the Internet. The Libraries buttn, which lets yu find yur dcuments, phts, music and mre. Windws Media Player, a prgram that lets yu play music and vides. 4 Hw d I use a muse? 6. Yur cmputer s muse lets yu interact with what s n yur cmputer screen: A pinter n the screen, called the cursr, shws where yu are. The cursr changes shape depending n what it is hvering ver. It can be an arrw:, a hand:, r if in a dcument, a line: that shws where yu are typing. Slide yur muse arund t mve the cursr arund n yur screen. If yu run ut f space yu can lift the muse and repsitin it n yur desk r table. If yur cmputer is busy the cursr changes t an hurglass: r animated circle: 7. A cmputer muse usually has tw buttns r clickable areas n tp, ne n the left and ne n the right. Pressing these is knwn as left clicking r right clicking : Left click nce t select an ptin, like a web link. Left click twice (a duble click ) t pen a dcument. Right click t make a mini-menu pp up. Yu can then select frm the menu using the left buttn. 8. Yu can als drag things n-screen with yur muse: Mve the cursr s it is ver the recycle bin. Click and hld the left muse buttn (that is, press it dwn and keep it pressed). Yu can nw drag yur recycling bin t anther part f the desktp. Release the muse buttn. Nw click and hld the recycling bin again, and drag it back t where it was. 9. Yur muse may als have a little wheel in the middle, called the scrll wheel. Mving this lets yu scrll up and dwn a dcument r web page. 10. Laptps have a trackpad instead f a muse (althugh yu can als cnnect a muse and use it instead): Drag yur finger arund n the track pad t mve yur cursr n the screen. Belw the trackpad there is usually a left buttn and right buttn, which have the same functins as the buttns n a muse. Many trackpads als let yu tap n them nce r twice, fr a single r duble left click. 5 Hw d I use a tablet? 11. A tablet is a slim, light, prtable cmputer. Tablets dn t have a built-in keybard r trackpad. Instead, they use a tuchscreen that yu tap, swipe r type using yur fingers. yu wn t see a cursr n the screen, since yu can tap anywhere yu want. 12. Use yur fingers and the tuchscreen t cntrl yur tablet: T pen an app r select smething, tap the screen. T mve between screens r scrll up and dwn, swipe with yur finger. T enter text int a bx, tap the bx and an n-screen keybard will appear. Many tablets let yu use mre than ne finger. Fr example, yu can zm in r ut by spreading tw fingers apart r pinching them tgether. 13. Sftware prgrams n tablets are called apps. Each app has an n-screen icn t pen r launch it. Instead f a single desktp screen, tablets let yu mve between different screens by swiping. Yu can rganise which app icns appear n each screen. 14. Have a lk at the manual fr yur tablet t see what ther features it supprts and make sure yu find ut hw t clse an applicatin dwn. 15. Sme peple use tablets as an n the g wrk cmputer, fr dcuments, spreadsheets and presentatins. Typing n screen means mst peple dn t use a tablet as their main wrk cmputer. Sme tablets let yu use a wireless keybard and muse t make this easier. 16. When chsing a tablet think abut which perating system (OS) is right fr yu. This is the sftware that runs the tablet. Mst tablets run Apple r Andrid OS s, and sme use a versin f Windws. The right chice might depend n: Yur main cmputer. Yur budget. Hw easy yu find using each type f tablet. The apps yu want t use.
