Leading cancer treatments and improving outcomes for patients: Our
Why? Our patients will always come first and no matter what our vision is for the years ahead, this ethos of will always remain the same. However, there are many other individuals and organisations who also influence and shape our future. At, we aim to understand the needs of our patients, our local community, our commissioners, our partners, our members, our fundraisers, our volunteers and many more. As a result, we endeavour to consider these partners when planning and delivering our services. With the current economic environment and changes to the NHS, more challenges are presented and despite our expertise in cancer treatment, research and education, we acknowledge that to impact at an international level, must continue to evolve. Your input Our exercise was launched at our Annual Members Meeting in 2011 and has since involved a lengthy phase of engagement with many of our stakeholders. We have carefully listened to staff, members of the public, governors, healthcare organisations and others to find out what they would like from by The process has involved an array of activity including the formation of a staff forum group, a staff consultation phase, a variety of public engagement and stakeholder events and visiting towns and shopping centres in Greater Manchester and Cheshire to ask the public for their views. We are delighted that we received 2,500 responses, ensuring that we not only gained a local view, but also a regional and national perspective. This process is our way of actively preparing for our future and thanks to the huge participation we now have a clear guide to This visionary document details the key four themes that have emerged and highlights our ambitions and plans surrounding each one. The information here will give you a clearer understanding of our direction, what we hope to achieve over the coming years and also what the impact will be on everyone involved. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our process and also to those who will play a part in making this vision become a reality. We look forward to hearing your feedback and thank you again for your support. Rt Hon Lord Keith Bradley Chairman Caroline Shaw Chief Executive
The Christie specialises in cancer treatment, research and education and is the largest cancer centre in Europe. Treating 40,000 patients a year from across the UK, it became the first UK centre to be officially accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre and has its own dedicated hospital charity. employs 2,500 staff, all of whom are determined to provide the best possible cancer care and patient experience. So far, we have opened radiotherapy centres in Oldham and Salford to help improve access to treatments for our patients. Extending our services into the community, while maintaining levels of service, is a key element of our future. Our experts have been pioneering cancer research breakthroughs for more than 100 years and is well known for many world-firsts which have advanced cancer treatment on a global scale. Housing the largest single site early phase clinical trials unit in the world, we have an excellent reputation as an international leader in research and innovation, which is further strengthened by being a partner in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) and Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC). A core element of is education. With its own School of Oncology, the first of its kind in the UK, educates healthcare professionals from across the country, enhancing the patient experience and promoting developments in cancer care. While continuing to focus on our specialist areas of cancer treatment, research and education, will use the findings from the process to further enhance services, not just in the UK, but across the world. Four themes were identified through this engagement exercise: 1. Leading cancer care 2. experience 3. Local and specialist care 4. Best outcomes
1 Leading cancer care You said is recognised as an international centre of excellence with even more potential for its clinical experts to lead cancer care and treatment for the benefit of patients. Our pledge to you We will continue to lead the development of cancer treatment, research and education so that by 2020 we are recognised as one of the world s top five comprehensive cancer centres. What we are doing now Through the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) we are leading the development of first class cancer services, research and teaching across Greater Manchester. We are creating a regional centre for brachytherapy to provide cutting edge treatments for patients with prostate and cervical cancer. We are building a new integrated unit bringing together our specialised haematology and young oncology services to provide first class care. With The University of Manchester we are constructing a new research building to give researchers the world class facilities they need to make the scientific breakthroughs we need to beat cancer. We are working with cancer centres across the globe to carry out research and train the expert staff the world needs to treat cancer. Our ambition for the future We want to be recognised by healthcare professionals and the public as one of the world s top five cancer centres. We want to be the hospital of choice for patients requiring specialist cancer treatments across the country. We want to demonstrate excellent clinical outcomes and continued improvement in survival rates so that by 2020 over two thirds of patients diagnosed with cancer survive for more than five years. We want to be the recognised lead organisation for the delivery of cancer care for patients across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
2 experience You said Patients and families have an attachment to as a wonderful and special place which makes them feel safe and understood. Our pledge to you We will continue to ensure that patients can receive the Christie experience throughout their illness and wherever our services are provided. What we are doing now We are working with Macmillan Cancer Support to redesign cancer pathways and the experience of patients from diagnosis to follow up and beyond. Every month we ask 200 patients about their experience at and make improvements in response to their comments. Our Christie values drive our principles and put patients at the centre of our services. We bring together research and education with our service delivery to provide the best possible experience. We are national leaders in combining intense cancer treatment with a range of complementary therapies as part of a holistic approach. We are working with the local community to improve sustainability of our services and reduce our impact on the local environment. Our ambition for the future We want to employ the best clinical staff and deliver our services to a Christie kite-mark standard recognised by patients across the country. We want to extend our services into local communities, supporting our patients wherever and whenever they need us, with more flexible options for cancer follow-up in the years after cancer has been treated. We want our nurses and other professionals to work together in the community as Christie support teams. We want to ensure that patients receive the best care towards the end of life by enhancing our specialist palliative care service. We want to develop a new Norman Foster designed Maggie s centre to provide holistic support services for patients.
3 Local and specialist care You said Patients and families are prepared to travel to for specialist services but want some services to be provided locally where this is possible. Our pledge to you We will provide high quality specialist care at our main site in south Manchester and wherever possible offer our specialist treatment closer to patients homes. What we are doing now We are providing safe and effective cancer treatment. We deliver cutting edge beam therapy treatments via our network of radiotherapy centres. We are providing systemic treatments such as chemotherapy in eight other hospitals with pilots in two health centres and some chemotherapy is already delivered in patients homes. Using the latest imaging and video conferencing technology, our cancer specialists provide expert advice on patient treatments as part of local multidisciplinary teams in every trust across Greater Manchester and East Cheshire. web portal provides immediate access to our clinical records so that general practitioners can keep up to date with the care of all of our patients. Our ambition for the future We want to deliver more chemotherapy closer to patients homes using as many innovative means as possible, including a mobile chemotherapy unit. We want to extend our network of radiotherapy centres to provide better access to specialist treatments in the south of the cancer network area. We want to offer direct access to some of our specialist services to reduce delays in diagnosis and offer our patients more choice. We want to work with the commissioning groups to tailor our services to local needs. We want to build on the excellent outcomes and demonstrable safety of our surgical care and improve access to our specialist cancer surgeons. We want to be recognised internationally as a specialist centre for minimally invasive cancer treatments.
4 Best outcomes You said Patients value as a place where they get the latest cancer treatments, trials and technologies to increase their life expectancy and quality of life. Our pledge to you We will continue to offer the latest technology and develop new treatments for the future, making our data on outcomes of treatments available to the public. What we are doing now Our surgical outcomes are outstanding and compare with the best in the world. We provide state-of-the-art radiotherapy with leading edge techniques. Our chemotherapy is safe and effective with the latest drugs being available to our patients. We have been designated as one of two sites for a national proton beam therapy service. We have the world s largest single site early phase trials unit for cancer and a third of our patients are entered into research studies. We routinely publicise our outcome data through our monthly performance reports and annual quality accounts. Our ambition for the future We want our surgical care to be available to more patients and to further develop our expertise in bowel, urological, gynaecological and plastic reconstructive surgery. We want our radiotherapy research to be world-class, building on our existing programme and proton beam service. We want to be seen as an academic leader in cancer outcome data publication. We want to make our data on effectiveness, safety and patient experience available to all via our website. We want to achieve national recognition by award of Biomedical Research Centre status.
Going forward s process represents our efforts to shape our own services in cancer treatment, research and education, and to work with other partners across the network to improve cancer care for all patients. It is our commitment to develop every element from surgical expertise and clinical trials research, to end of life care. This vision is based on feedback we received from all of our stakeholders. To reach the ambitions we envisage, we hope to work collaboratively with our NHS and academic partners through MAHSC, our dedicated charity, commissioning bodies and many others. Thank you for supporting and we look forward to communicating our progress in enhancing expertise against cancer.
