1 Creating Learning Mdules Learning Mdules are a methd fr presenting curse materials in a linear fashin, with a table f cntents and the ability t cntrl the release f the material ne screen at a time. It embraces the idea f chunking infrmatin, and can cntain all types f cntent, such as text, graphics, multimedia and assessment tls. Cntent within a Learning Mdule is added and managed just like cntent in a flder. Yu can als add flders and sub flders t a Learning Mdule t prvide a hierarchical structure. Flders and sub flders prvide an utline view that is displayed in the Table f Cntents fr the mdule. The Table f Cntents allws yu t present cntent in a structured manner. Flders and Sub flders within Learning Mdules have the same prperties as ther Flders and Sub flders fund in Blackbard curses. Learning Mdules can be viewed sequentially r nn-sequentially. If sequential viewing is enfrced, students view the Learning Mdule in the rder in which the items are listed. Students cannt advance t a page within the unit withut having viewed the previus page. If sequential viewing is nt enfrced, items in the Learning Mdule may be viewed in any rder frm the Cntent page. The abve vide prvided a demnstratin f hw t setup learning mdules within yur Blackbard curses and the next sectin prvides step-by-step instructins fr using the tl. 1. Open yur curse and then turn n edit mde by clicking n the Edit Mde buttn. 1

2 2. Navigate t the cntent area that will huse the Learning Mdule. 3. Click n the [Build Cntent] buttn and then click n Learning Mdule in the drp dwn menu. The Create Learning Mdule screen will be displayed. 4. Enter a title fr the mdule in the Name field. 5. Enter infrmatin abut the mdule in the Text field (i.e., unit bjectives, items t think abut as the mdule is being reviewed, etc.). 2

3 6. Permit Users t View this Cntent - click the N radi buttn if yu wuld like t hide the mdule frm the students r the Yes radi buttn if the mdule shuld be visible t students. 7. Select Date and Time Restrictins - If yu wuld like the Learning Mdule t be visible t students fr a specified windw f time, enter dates and times in the Display After and/r the Display Until text fields, r click n the icns t the right f each f the fields and select dates frm a pp- up calendar and pre- defined time perids frm a drp- dwn menu. Blackbard will autmatically display and/r hide the vide based n these defined dates and times. 8. A certain amunt f cntrl can be exercised ver hw the Learning Mdule is viewed by setting the view ptins Enfrce Sequential Viewing f the Learning Mdule? - By default the N radi buttn is selected. Click n the Yes radi buttn if students will be required t view the Learning Mdule in the rder in which the items are listed. Open in New Windw - by default the Learning Mdule is displayed within the Blackbard curse windw. Click n the Yes radi buttn if the Learning Mdule shuld be displayed in a new brwser windw. (We d nt recmmend that this ptin be set t Yes - - many students use small screens and mbile devices making it difficult t navigate t the main curse area.) 3

4 Track Number f View - Click n the Yes radi buttn if yu wuld like t tack the number f times the Learning Mdule is viewed. 9. Shw Table f Cntents t Users - by default the Yes radi buttn is selected. Click n the N radi buttn if yu wuld like t hide the Table f Cntents frm students. 10. Hierarchy Display - Click n the drp dwn arrw t the right f the field and select n f the display types if Learning Mdule cntent titles will be displayed in an utline frmat. 11. Click the [Submit] buttn t save yur changes. Adding Cntent t a Learning Mdule After a Learning Mdule is added t a Cntent Area, cntent needs t be added t it. Hw the cntent is viewed, sequentially r nn-sequentially is set in the Optins and can be changed at any time. Cntent is nrmally added t Flders and Sub-flders within the Learning Mdule. Hwever a file can als be placed by itself in the learning mdule. As yu add cntent t the Learning Mdule, a link t each cntent item is displayed in the Table f Cntents. Once cntent has been added t the Learning Mdule, yu can set the item sequence by drpping and dragging them int place. Items can als be sequenced using the keybard Accessible Rerdering tl lcated in the Actin Bar within the Learning Mdule. 4

5 Adding Tests, Surveys and Assignments t Learning Mdules Tests, surveys and assignments can be added t a Learning Mdule. Yu can enfrce cmpletin f these items as part f a Sequential Learning Mdule. T add assessment items: 1. Open the Cntent Area that cntains the Learning Mdule. 2. Click the Edit Mde icn in the upper right- hand- crner f the brwser windw t switch t edit view. 3. Click n the name f the Learning Mdule t pen it. 4. Click n the [Create Assessment] buttn and then click n Test, Survey r Assignment in the drp dwn menu. 5. Prvide the required infrmatin fr the selected item (click n the Test and Survey, r the Assignment tutrial links in the menu t the right fr additinal infrmatin n using the assessment tls). 6. Click the [Submit] buttn t save yur settings. Adding Interactive Tls t a Learning Mdule Learning Mdules are cnnected t a specific Interactive Tl r t a page where that particular tl is accessed. In the case f tls such as Self and Peer Assessment, Blgs and Wikis, the link directs the student t the starting page fr the tl. T add Interactive Tls: 1. Open the Cntent Area that cntains the Learning Mdule. 2. Click the Edit Mde icn in the upper right- hand- crner f the brwser windw t switch t edit view. 3. Click n the name f the Learning Mdule t pen it. 4. Click n the [Add Interactive Tl] buttn and then click n the tl in the drp dwn menu. 5. Prvide the requires infrmatin fr the selected tl (click n the tutrial links in the menu n the right- hand- side f the brwser windw fr additinal infrmatin n setting up the Interactive Tls. 6. Click the [Submit] buttn t save yur settings. 5
