1 OOSTBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PRESCHOOL CURRICULUM GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE AND SEQUENCE The Goal of Christian Education The primary goal of Christian education consists of helping each student to grow into an independent person so that he/she can serve God according to His Word and is able and willing to employ all his/her talents to the honor of God and for the well being of his/her fellow creatures, in every area of life in which he/she is placed by God. The Objectives of Christian Education A. Deepen his/her commitment to love God. B. Develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for fulfilling his calling effectively in modern society. C. Discover and develop particular gifts and talents. D. Train and discipline those skills and attitudes necessary for satisfaction and productively in work and/or advanced levels of schooling. E. Develop awareness of him/herself as a learner able to adapt knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the ordinary tasks of life. F. Acquire competence for responsible living as an adult; especially the sensitivity and skill necessary for effective communication. G. Follow the norms for good health and physical fitness. H. Develop abilities of perception and judgment in moral and ethical matters. I. Mature as a Christian person in relation to self, others, and the environment. J. Acquire appreciation for the custom, habits, and beliefs of other Christian faith communities, ethnic groups, and other cultures. Preschool Objectives: As a Christian Preschool, Oostburg Christian School will endeavor to foster learning in a Christian atmosphere. The program will center around each child s needs and abilities with emphasis on a structured readiness program. The planned activities will be geared to the developmental level of the children, who will be encouraged to be actively involved. Spiritual Objectives: 1. Developing love for God and His world 2. Learning to praise God with songs and prayers 3. Accepting that God makes each of us special and different 4. Developing familiarity with the Bible. Social Objectives: 1. Learning to look and listen while others speak 2. Playing and working cooperatively with peers 3. Respecting adults and other children 4. Learning to share and take turns 5. Developing responsible attitudes 1

2 Emotional Objectives: 1. Developing self-confidence 2. Sharing feelings and emotions 3. Developing independence 4. Developing trust in others 5. Developing perseverance 6. Experiencing success Intellectual Objectives: 1. Exploring and observing God s world 2. Developing problem-solving skills 3. Experimenting with tools and materials 4. Learning to express self creatively 5. Developing pre-reading and pre-math skills 6. Improving vocabulary and communication skills Physical Objectives: 1. Developing large and small motor (muscle) control 2. Accepting other s abilities and inabilities 3. Developing good safety habits Bible Goals 1. Develop in each child a knowledge and understanding of God and His Word. 2. Develop in each child a knowledge and understanding of sin, salvation, and service. 3. Develop in each child a knowledge and understanding of the history and culture of the Old and New Testament. 4. Help each child hold God s Word in his/her heart through memorizing key Bible passages. 5. Help each child apply this learning to his/her daily life. 6. Equip each child to demonstrate his/her faith through a life of praise, gratitude, and service. 7. Help each child recognize the joy and comfort in knowing that everything belongs to God. 3 MATH GOALS 1. To see that God has created numbers for our use and so we can better understand our world. 2. To have a working knowledge of sets, sizes, position, ordering, quantity, and direction. 3. To understand one-to-one correspondence. 4. To be able to compare numbers. 5. To perform addition and subtraction. 6. To understand place value. 7. To know basic shapes and concepts in geometry. 8. To understand basic units of measurement including metric. 9. To be able to tell time - including calendar skills. 10. To have a working knowledge of money. 11. To understand orderly numbers. 12. To be able to read graphs. 13. To understand simple fractions. 14. To be able to do simple problem-solving. MATH SCOPE AND SEQUENCE 1. Shapes 2. Number Counting Seriation 4. Thinking and reasoning skills Art Goals 1. To teach the child that God has created him/her as an individual and that art is an expression of him/herself. 2. To encourage the development of individual artistic talent. 3. To expose students to a variety of art media. 4. To develop eye-hand coordination. 5. To develop an appreciation of art principles in God's creation, common objects, and art work. 6. To motivate the students to work on art projects Art Scope and Sequence 1. Collages 2. Simple painting 3. Learning how to properly cut with a scissors 4. Learning how to use glue 3

4 General Music Goals 1. To develop an appreciation and enjoyment of music as a gift from God. 2. To develop an understanding of how music should be used in service to God and for his glory. 3. To develop each child's ability to use his voice in singing praise to God. 4. To develop an understanding of the basic elements of music: Rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone, color, and expressive qualities. 5. To develop a proficiency in reading musical notation. 6. To develop the ability to listen critically to a variety of musical types. 7. To develop an appreciation for a variety of musical styles and media. 8. To develop an understanding of the historical progression of Western music, in both choral and instrumental forms. 9. To develop the ability to form value judgments on good and bad music. Physical Education 1. Each of us is a divinely-created creature who is soul and body, a conscious personal being and a biological one. The body is a priceless possession for the Christian. Students should learn that their bodies are important. 2. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. God gives us physical attributes (talents), and we must care for those just as much as our intellectual and spiritual ones. The care of our bodies is our decisional responsibility and part of our reasonable service to God. 3. Each of us is an organic whole. Education through the physical is not only possible but necessary! Because children learn by precept and practice, one task in physical education is to see that children understand and practice such values as personal integrity, cooperation, selfrespect, responsibility, and persistence. 4. Creative: Developing and maintaining health fitness and motor proficiency. Students will care for their bodies (health fitness) and will use human movement (motor proficiency) to most efficiently and meaningfully serve God and humanity. 5. Intellectual: Understanding the human organism in action. True thankfulness to God should be the result of understanding how our bodies are created and maintained. 6. Decisional: Developing the ability to make decisions about fitness, sport, and recreational pursuits and about Christian personal and social conduct. Reading/Literature Goals 1. To learn to read so students can better understand God's world and His will for their lives. 2. To learn letters and sounds. 3. To gain a working knowledge of phonetic rules and apply these to reading. 4. To increase reading comprehension. 5. To increase basic reading vocabulary. 6. To recognize sight words. 7. To improve oral reading ability and learn to use vocal and facial expressions. 4

5 8. To listen to a wide variety of stories. READING/LITERATURE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE 1. Mini pre-reading units are created by the teacher. 2. Realize our uniqueness as image-bearers of God. 3. Stimulate curiosity about our environment. 4. Help children realize their responsibilities in the protection of our environment. 5.
