WONDERFUL WORDS!! (John 16:1-14)

2 (John 16:1-14) The disciples were hurting because Jesus was going to leave them. These words given by Jesus were designed to encourage them. When we are hurting, the place to go is God's Word for encouragement.

3 THE PURPOSE OF JESUS' WORDS - Vss. 1, 4 All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. (John 16:1) I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. (John 16:4)

4 THE PURPOSE OF JESUS' WORDS - Vss. 1, 4 In John 16:1, it is Christ s deep desire that we don t go astray. Jesus wants to hold us in His hands (see John 10:27-31) He has sealed us for the day of Redemption by His Holy Spirit

5 THE PURPOSE OF JESUS' WORDS - Vss. 1, 4 Jesus wants to keep us, hold us, and be with us. But we must respond by trusting Him to do so!! And we must be obedient to the calling we all have as Christians!!

6 THE PROMISE OF PERSECUTION - Vss. 2-3 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

7 THE PROMISE OF PERSECUTION - Vss. 2-3 Jesus warns us of the persecution we will receive if we are totally obedient to Him. We must remember Jesus said, The insults of those have fallen on me. Jesus is always with us during times of persecution from either family, relatives, friends, or enemies.

8 THE PREOCCUPATION OF THE DISCIPLES - Vss. 5-6 Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.

9 THE PREOCCUPATION OF THE DISCIPLES - Vss. 5-6 The disciples were so preoccupied with Christ leaving that they never even understood the most important thing Jesus was going to be with the Father Sometimes we are so grieved when someone dies yet the Christian goes to be with the Father.

10 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Vss The Comforting Spirit - Vs. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

11 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - Vss Jesus continues that it, is for your good that I am going away. For Jesus was going to return to the Father and send the Holy Spirit. Before, Jesus was with them as the God/Man: 100% God and 100% Man. Now, Jesus would live IN them through the Power of the Holy Spirit.

12 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Vss The Convicting Spirit - Vss When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. It is a wonderful thing to be convicted by the Holy Spirit for conviction leads to repentance and repentance leads to a deep relationship with God.

13 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - Vss The Guiding Spirit - Vss I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

14 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - Vss Jesus promises in verse 13 that the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. Just as Jesus said only what the Father told Him so the Holy Spirit will be obedient to what God tells him to speak. and he will tell you what is yet to come. What a wonderful thing to know what is to come through the Holy Spirit. We can know the future and how things will end.

15 THE PROVISION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - Vss The Glorifying Spirit - Vs. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. The Holy Spirit brings glory to Jesus just as through the Power of the Holy Spirit we can bring glory to Jesus!!

16 (Summary) The Purpose of Jesus Words are to bring warning so we don t go astray. Jesus Words promise persecution but we know He will never leave us or forsake us We must not be preoccupied with our own grief and situation but understand that God has a higher purpose and God s Ways being higher. Jesus promised The Comforting, Convicting, Guiding, and Glorifying Spirit.

17 Let s pray: Father God thank You for Jesus Words. Thank You Jesus for Your words that warn us not to go astray but to press on to a higher calling Thank You Jesus for warning us that we will be persecuted for Your Name s Sake but that You are always with us.

18 Lord, teach us not to be grieved when things don t work out how we want them to but help us to see You in everything that Your Ways are higher. Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Words of a comforting, convicting, guiding, and glorifying Spirit. Thank You for fulfilling this wonderful promise by sending the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33). In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
