Housing Resources for Rural Veterans National Coalition for Homeless Veterans September 2012 THANKS TO THE HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION Housing Assistance Council Celebrating 40 Years of Building Rural Communities

Status of rural veterans More than 44 percent of military recruits, and those serving in Iraq & Afghanistan, come from rural areas. Among all VA health care users, 40.1 percent (nearly 2 million) reside in rural areas, including 79,500 from highly rural. Rural veterans have worse physical & mental health related to quality of life. VA has programs for rural veterans health, but less for housing.

Status -- continued Veterans often have challenges becoming or remaining homeowners. Maintaining modest homes owned by low-income & elderly vets is also big challenge. U.S. soldiers in recent conflicts increasingly come from--and return to rural areas. Rural users of VA programs are growing proportionate to urban VA users. Young people in most rural zip codes are 22 percent more likely to enlist than youths in cities.

How is rural different? Smaller projects with higher costs per unit. Homeless are less visible. Limited access to services. More homeownership (but need for rental ). More homeowners in poverty. Fewer contractors /appraisers/lenders. Lower appraisals (may be below cost to build). Little or no public transit/walkability.

How is rural different? No or very limited philanthropic dollars. Less support from local government. High poverty rates in nonmetro areas 17.0% in 2011, up from 16.5% in Areas of persistent high poverty (492 counties wih 20%+ poverty from 1990 to 2010). Much of rural population is within metro areas.
