(3-0) (online) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course attempts to develop interest, aptitude, and understanding through visual, verbal, and actual experience with media. A basis for approaching visual arts is also included. Emphasis is on exposure to the visual arts. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To learn basic terminology, concepts and styles of visual art 2. To be able to talk and write about art 3. To be able to approach work you have never seen before 4. To understand the elements and principles of design 5. To have an awareness of materials used by visual artists 6. To have an awareness of the history of art and its importance to our world METHOD OF PRESENTATION: This course is available to you entirely on the World Wide Web. Presentation will consist of textbook readings with accompanying instructor notes with relevant links and weekly assignments. COURSE OUTLINE: 1. What is Art Living with Art Themes and Purposes of Art 2. Elements and Principles of Design 3. Art Media Two Dimensional and Three Dimensional 4. Survey of Art History COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students must have a copy of the textbook, A World of Art, 7 th Edition by Henry M. Sayre. The class is divided into weekly lessons which you will find listed in Assignments. Each lesson includes reading from the textbook (usually one chapter, sometimes two), notes with field trips, and a quiz for each chapter. Some lessons also include a written homework assignment.

2 2 Find the lesson for the week in the Assignments tab. Read the chapter(s). After reading the chapter you will have notes to read. Often there will be written homework assignments connected to those notes. Take the online quiz. (Some of the questions from the quiz may be from the notes.) Then do any written assignment. Each week s lesson will usually end at midnight, Sunday evening. Homework assignments and quizzes will not be accepted after that time. Readings from the Textbook: Reading the textbook is mandatory and crucial for this class. It serves as the starting point for the notes, field trips and homework, and it is the basis for the quizzes. It is necessary that you read all the assigned chapters, take notes, make underlines, use whatever method you have for organizing and remembering the material. Notes: Each chapter s notes (found in Assignments) will contain various items that address topics relevant to the textbook readings. Notes provide additional examples and commentary on the topic and many will include www links to field trips. These field trips into the Internet may be a starting point for an additional assignment. Some notes will include a homework assignment. Quiz: After reading the chapters and notes, take the online quiz for the chapter. The quiz is based on the textbook and notes and must be taken when you finish reading. IMPORTANT!! The quiz will often contain questions from the notes field trips internet sites that are part of the notes. The question will identify itself as a field trip, so to research the answer, find the appropriate field trip. The quiz score is dependent on the number of questions in the quiz. You may open the quiz, print it out, and then save it. When you return with your answers you will submit it. There is only one try with the quiz, so give yourself plenty of time to get the answers. Written Homework Assignments: Homework assignments will be posted in the Notes. They will vary with the material you are learning. They are worth 10 points, and MUST be done during the time allowed (usually by the end of the week.) You send me your homework by posting it on your group discussion board (unless otherwise directed). The homework must be done within the time specified. NO late work will be accepted. You will be notified as to which group you belong to during the second week of school.

3 3 Q & A Discussion Board: There is also Q & A discussion board, open to everyone all semester long. This discussion board simulates traditional classroom discussions, except that participation is asynchronous. This means that you can visit or contribute to the discussion at any time. After you post your response, take the time to respond to someone else.and get a thread going! Exams: There are no comprehensive exams in this class. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Grading: The written homework assignments and quizzes will determine the student s final grade in the course. Students with questions about their work, grades or grading procedures should discuss them with me as soon as possible do not wait until the final week of class! Extra Credit - Answering (correctly!) another student s questions posted in the Q & A discussion board. You can earn up to 10 points during the semester. Each correct answer is 1 point. Grading Scale: These percentages will be based on the total number of points; i.e. (90% of the points = A) A B C D 0-59 F Attendance: In order to keep up with the assignments and participate in the discussion board, and send in the homework and projects on time, it will be necessary to log into the class at least four times a week. The Blackboard system allows me to track every time a student logs into the class site, so I can tell when you are logged in and when you are not. If you do not visit the class site at least four times a week, you may, at my discretion, have credits deducted from your final grade. If I feel this deduction is becoming necessary, I will advise you of it before it happens. All of the assigned work is due by a certain date, so keep on top of it, participate in the Q&A discussion board, and you will be in attendance!

4 4 Also, I continually and unexpectedly post new announcements on the Announcement pages. Often there is important time relevant information in them, and certainly there is always interesting information!! Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. Free educational workshops are also provided by the Student Success Center throughout the semester. For more information, visit the Student Success Center website at English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
