2 Why study this programme? The tourism industry has experienced continued growth and diversification to become one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. In Britain, tourism is the third largest export earner, worth 115 billion a year. It employs approximately 2.6 million people and supports over 200,000 small to medium enterprises. This programme has been developed to meet the demand for successful entrepreneurs and managers in tourism. It will provide you with a critical understanding of the study of tourism management and the global tourism marketplace and will give you the ability and confidence to creatively and innovatively solve management problems in the tourism industry. You will develop skills and knowledge in areas such as tourism marketing, innovation and product development, human resource management, and destination planning. You will also gain insights from UK and international visits, case studies and industry examples. As employers are looking for graduates with distinctive, relevant experience, this programme will also enable you to take part in our Greenwich Employability Passport scheme. This is designed to recognise and reward extracurricular activities such as part-time work, volunteering, society membership, or attending our special guest lectures, to help give you a competitive edge in the job market. Our staff combine a wealth of international business knowledge and industry experience with a commitment to support the learning of every student. The Department of Marketing, Events & Tourism has been running specialist marketing degree programmes for more than 20 years. We were the first UK university to offer a specialist degree in marketing communications, and we continue to offer quality undergraduate and postgraduate marketing degrees, as well as public relations (PR), events management, hospitality and tourism management programmes. New communication channels continue to revolutionise the industry and move these disciplines beyond their roots in consumer business. We work closely with all relevant professional bodies to ensure that our programmes are continually updated to reflect changing requirements and our students graduate ready for the workplace. Our PR programmes have Chartered Institute of Public Relations accreditation and our marketing programmes are recognised by the Chartered Institute of

4 Marketing. Our students are able to gain exemptions towards qualifications from these professional bodies. Students who already hold professional qualifications benefit from the ability to join some of our programmes with advanced standing. Our teaching staff are experienced professionals who have worked as marketers and analysts within companies such as BT, Konica, Philips Electronics, Honda and the BBC. Our staff are active in research and maintain excellent professional contacts. The Greenwich Campus is based on a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a bustling mix of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. The business districts of Canary Wharf and the City are a short journey away on the Docklands Light Railway. There are also direct rail links into central London. What will you study? Year 1 Tourism, Entrepreneurship and Technology (30 credits) This course will provide you with an understanding of the role of entrepreneurship, technology and financial management in the tourism industry. It will also introduce you to the different types and sizes of businesses in the profit and not-forprofit sectors.

5 Perspectives on Tourism (30 credits) This course will give you an appreciation of the various perspectives through which tourism is studied. You will also gain an awareness of the historical and contemporary environment shaping the tourism sectors. Professional Practice (30 credits) This course will give you an understanding of the characteristics of teaching and learning in universities and of the nature of team building and teamwork. In addition, you will gain an awareness of the skills, knowledge and personal qualities required for seeking graduate employment in the tourism and events sectors. Option courses (30 credits) One option from: Special Interest Tourism; Tourism and Hospitality Operations Management; Introduction to the Events Industry. Year 2 Marketing for Tourism and Hospitality (30 credits) This course explores the key concepts and practices of marketing and evaluates different marketing techniques and their application to the tourism sector. It also provides insight into the role of tourism marketing in the public, private and third sectors. Research Methods (15 credits) This course will equip you with the key skills to evaluate, research, develop and implement your own research plans for marketing, programming, visitor management and interpretation for the purposes of wider strategic planning. Key methodological approaches are also outlined, and you will be given an overview of different research methods. Human Resources for Tourism, Hospitality and Events (15 credits) This course will develop your knowledge of human resource management (HRM) practices in the tourism and events industries. It will analyse the role of HRM in relation to other key areas of tourism and events business management and will familiarise you with important HRM techniques. Destination Management (30 credits) This course analyses tourism planning at the international, national, regional, local and organisational levels. Option courses (30 credits) One option from: New Tourisms; Visitor Management; Event Operations Overseas Exchange Programme You can apply to participate in the European Union student exchange programme, Erasmus. This can provide a grant towards the cost of studying part of this degree in a European partner institution during your second year. 6 Optional Sandwich Year You can undertake a work placement in your third year. This will help you further increase your career prospects and earning potential by giving you practical experience and industry insight. In previous years, our students have undertaken their work placements in companies such as Sandals Resorts International, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, University of Greenwich and Wembley Plaza Hotel (Hilton). The Business School Employability Office can help you find suitable placement opportunities, as well as giving you practical advice on writing CVs and preparing you for assessment centres and interviews. Final Year Tourism, Innovation and Product Design (30 credits) This course will illustrate the role of innovation in the history of the tourism industry and will analyse the contribution of innovation to tourism business development and growth. It will also critically review the tourism product development process and examine methods of business planning. Tourism, Development and Public Policy (30 credits) This course critiques the relationship between tourism and public policy at the international, national, regional and local levels. It also explores how and why governments and other agencies make tourism policy decisions with development objectives. Option courses (60 credits) One option from: Dissertation; Consultancy Project; Thematic Independent Studies (30 credits) One option from: Tourism, Place and Identity; Managing Quality Tourism Experiences; Contemporary Issues in Events Management (30 credits) Career opportunities As a graduate of this programme, you will have the specialist knowledge and transferable skills required to work in areas such as tourism marketing, tourism destination management and tourism policy. In addition, you should be attractive to tour operators and tourism businesses and have the confidence to launch your own tourism enterprise. Teaching and assessment You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, site visits, case studies and presentations. Courses combine a strong commercial orientation with academic rigour, and our lecturers have sector-specific experience as well as excellent academic credentials. Visiting lecturers and guest speakers from the tourism industry contribute their own experience in areas such as destination marketing and international development. 7 Key facts UCAS code: N8N2 G BA/TM Attendance: 3 years full-time, 4 years sandwich, 6 years part-time Entry requirements: You should have: 280 UCAS points FROM a minimum of two A-levels or equivalent qualifications. PLUS GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications. Direct entry to Years 2 and 3 is available for qualified applicants. If you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or an equivalent rating in another Secure English Language Test. If you have an overall IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5, you can undertake one of our five- or nine-week pre-sessional English programmes designed to help you improve your academic English before starting your degree studies.
