1 SYLLABUS EDHE 5307 The Community College Wayland Baptist University School of Education Mission: Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused, and distinctively Christian environment for professional success, lifelong learning, and service to God and humankind. EDHE 5307 The Community College Spring 2014 (February 24 May 17) Instructor: Dr. Jeff Rhodes Phone: Course Description: The Community College - history and development of community colleges; students and faculty of the community college; curriculum and programs; governance, administration, and finance/funding. Prerequisites: Graduate Standing. Required textbooks: Cohen, Arthur M. & Brawer, Florence B. (2008). The American Community College, 5 th Ed. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Student Learning Outcomes: Students will understand the historical significance of the community in the development postsecondary education in the United States Students will grasp the mission and role of the community college in providing access to postsecondary opportunity in America Students will grasp the importance of the community college to workforce development Students will grasp the role of the community college in baccalaureate attainment Assignments: 1. Discussion Boards (weekly) - The instructor will post discussion questions each week. Every member of the class is expected to engage each topic in a thoughtful and critical manner, utilizing his/her own professional experience in
2 education, accepted theories of educational research, existing research, and a logical argument. Personal attacks and racial/ethnic/sexist or otherwise discriminatory or disparaging comments will not be tolerated. A total of 100 points are available for discussion boards, and they are graded in a comprehensive manner at the conclusion of the term. You are expected to engage new discussion topics by Tuesday of each week, then engage your classmates in the threaded discussions. 2. Administrator Interview each student will interview a community college administrator (master s qualified dean or higher in rank). The student will examine, through this interview, the role of the community college in postsecondary student success, funding issues, governance, relationships with baccalaureate-granting institutions, transfer equivalency, curriculum development, faculty supervision, and enrollment management. Institutional choices must be approved by the instructor. The write-up on the content and reaction to the interview may be no longer than ten pages. 3. Article reviews Each student will choose two articles from those posted by the instructor to review and analyze. The article reviews must be thorough (without simply regurgitating the content) and critically analyze the merits of the study and its findings. The reviews may be no more than five pages in length. 4. Issue paper Each student will choose a pressing issue pertinent to community college education and construct a reasoned and thorough review and recommendation to address this issue. Each paper will be no more than 10 pages in length, it will be written using APA style, and it will graded on professionalism, thoroughness, understanding of the issue, and likely effectiveness of the solution. 5. Final exam - The instructor will post on the course website (in Blackboard) a question or questions you are likely to face on a comprehensive examination at the close of your master s program. You will answer one question in a report that may be no longer than 10 pages in length (following APA style). Each of the above five items are each worth 20% of your final grade. The grades for each will be measure on a 100-point scale, entered in the online gradebook, then averaged for your final grade. Due dates for each assignment are posted in the course calendar below. *ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE FORMATTED ACCORDING TO THE APA MANUAL, 6TH EDITION. All papers are to be double-spaced, with a running head, page numbers, and margins no wider than one inch around the page. Your font may be no bigger than 12 point, and you may use Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Arial.
3 ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE TURNED IN BY TO THE INSTRUCTOR S WBU ADDRESS! ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students enrolled at Wayland Baptist should make effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be explained to the satisfaction of the instructor who will decide whether the omitted work may be made up. Any student who misses twenty-five (25%) or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F for that course. When a student reaches a number of absences considered by the instructor to be excessive, the instructor will so advise the student and file an Unsatisfactory Progress Report in the office of the dean. Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined by the instructor in the course syllabus, are part of Wayland s attendance policy. Instructor s Additional Policies logging into the course, participation in class discussions, and submission of assignments will constitute class attendance in this online environment. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lectures will be posted to the Blackboard site. Assignments can be sent to the instructor at his WBU address. UNIVERSITY GRADING SYSTEM: A Cr for Credit B NCR No Credit C I Incomplete* D W for withdrawal F below 60 WP Withdrawal Passing WF Withdrawal Failing X No grade given IP In Progress A grade of CR indicates that credit in semester hours was granted but no grade or grade points were recorded. A grade of incomplete is changed if the work required is completed prior to the date indicated in the official University calendar of the next long term, unless the instructor designates an earlier date for completion. If the work is not completed by the appropriate date, the I is converted to the grade of F. An incomplete notation cannot remain on the student s permanent record and must be replaced by the qualitative grade (A-F) by the date specified in the official University calendar of the next regular term.
4 ACADEMIC HONESTY: University students are expected to conduct themselves according to the highest standards of academic honesty. Academic misconduct for which a student is subject to penalty includes all forms of cheating, such as illicit possession of examinations or examination materials, forgery, or plagiarism. (Plagiarism is the presentation of the work of another as one s own work). Disciplinary action for academic misconduct is the responsibility of the faculty members assigned to the course. The faculty member is charged with assessing the gravity of any case of academic dishonesty, and with giving sanctions to any student involved. Penalties may be applied to individual cases of academic dishonesty. See catalog for more information about academic dishonesty. It is the responsibility of the student to disclose and to provide documentation pertaining to the disability so that appropriate modifications may be made. You will tell us who you are, where you work, why you are pursuing this degree, why you are taking this course, and what you hope to accomplish by doing so. Your introduction is due by Wednesday, February 26 th. Reading - Cohen & Brawer chapters 1 & 2 question your first discussion response is due by Wednesday, February 26 th, after which we will let the discussion/debate take us where it wishes. March 3rd Reading Cohen & Brawer chapter 3 Your choices for administrator interviews are due by March 8 th at 11:59 p.m. You need to make contact with the administrator to confirm that s/he is willing to be interviewed, and you will send documentation of that contact (PDF of communication is best) to me.
