1 SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK ADVANCED STANDING/POST-MSW LEARNING PLAN Student Field Instructor Placement Site Start Date of Internship
2 Dear Field Instructor and Student: Attached is the learning plan that you will use during this internship. The Field Instructor and student develop the learning plan together and refer to it throughout the internship to guide the student s learning. As you will notice, the learning plan is centered around the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) 10 Core Competencies of Social Work practice, which students must demonstrate competency in in order to successfully complete the MSW program. Under CSWE guidelines, a student entering the MSW program with a BSW is assumed to have already developed generalist practice skills; therefore, Advanced Standing students develop the learning plan focusing on the advanced practice behaviors. We understand that it is difficult to anticipate every learning opportunity that may be available during the internship, therefore, when completing the learning plan, view it as a guide for the internship learning. If additional learning opportunities arise, the student is free to engage in them. However, if significant adjustments are made in the student s learning, these changes must be documented on the learning plan and the amended plan sent to the Field Education Office.
3 Directions for Completing the Learning Plan 1. The middle column lists the students will be working towards developing during the internship. 2. Directly under the practice behaviors is a section entitled Identified Tasks/Learning Opportunities for Student to Meet. The Field Instructor and Student should list the various learning activities/tasks that the Student will engage in to meet the practice behaviors. 3. To the Right of the /Learning Tasks Column is a column marked O for Ongoing. If there is a specific date that an identified learning task needs to be completed by, put that date in this column. For example, if a student needs to complete an orientation or training by the second week of the internship, you would calculate what that date would be and enter it in this column. If a specific activity or task has been identified that the student will continue working on throughout the internship, then put an O for ongoing. You may find that many of these tasks will be identified as Ongoing. 4. Please refer to the Timeline for the date the completed Learning Plan is to be submitted to the Field Education Office 5. 4 School Description Please provide detailed information on the services that you will be learning about during your internship. If the internship site has a job description similar to what you will be doing, please attach a copy of that description. District or Cooperative: (ex: type of community rural, inner city, etc.) Population served: (ex: regular education, spec. education-list) Services: (ex: individual, types of groups, home visits, etc.) Age: (ex: 3 through 18 year olds or elementary, high school, etc.) Issues: (ex: behavior, academics, grief, etc.) Tasks/duties assigned during internship. Identify what a school social worker does in your internship setting. Make sure that you include all tasks that you will be involved with during your internship. You can add tasks to this list throughout the internship.

7 Critical Thinking - #3 Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments 1. Demonstrates self-awareness, common knowledge, and practice skills and applies them in a manner that results in a positive school climate that respects and values differences.
8 Diversity - #4 Engage diversity and difference in practice. 1. Uses evidence informed practices, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of the role of culture in the helping process 2. Recognize barriers to academic progress relating to cultural issues within the school setting while supporting an environment that honors and celebrates the cultures of the population within the school. 9 Social and Economic Justice #5 Advance human rights and social and economic justice 1. Advocate for students and their families by helping them gain access to and effectively use formal and informal school and community resources that enable families to self-advocate.
10 Research Informed Practice - #6 Engage in researchinformed practice and practice-informed research. 1. Seek out evidence informed practices and evaluate based on student needs, school environment, family and community context 2. Provide evidence informed practices designed to enhance positive educational experiences within a multitier framework, that involve students, families, school, and community resources as appropriate, such as school-wide, group, family or individual interventions, or crisis intervention.
11 Human Behavior and Social Environment - #7 Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment. 1. Use ecological perspectives and functional approaches to enhance understanding of barriers to learning and the interventions that foster improvement of student well-being and academic progress.
12 Policy Practice - #8 Engage in policy practice to address social and economic well-being and to deliver effective social work services. 1. Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential records that document school social work services, demonstrate outcomes, and promote accountability according to federal, state and local laws. 2. Be informed about court decisions, legislation, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures that affect school social work practice, to effectively advocate for students.
13 Respond to contexts that shape practice - #9 Respond to contexts that shape practice. 1. Identify areas of need that are not being addressed by the school and community and shall work to create services that address these needs. 2. Provide training and engage parents, school personnel, other professionals and community members in the removal of barriers to learning.
14 Engagement, Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation - #10A Engagement 1. Provide leadership and collaboration in the implementation of comprehensive school-based and school-linked services that promote student well-being and positive academic outcomes 2. Engage students, parents, colleagues and classrooms to build relationships that contribute to a positive school climate.
15 Engagement, Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation - #10B Assessment 1. Conduct reliable and valid assessments of students and school settings to inform the design of interventions to remove barriers to learning. 2. Demonstrates skills in systematic assessment, data gathering, and interpretation at multiple levels using a variety of methods (for example, interview, direct observation, standardized instruments, surveys and focus groups) to assess the needs, characteristics, and interactions of students, families, and school personnel.
16 Engagement, Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation - #10C Intervention 1. Use interventions based on assessments relevant to the concerns in the referral and include goals, objectives, methods of evaluation and outcome criteria.
