1 Online Course Syllabus CS433 Computer Systems Security Important Notes: This document provides an overview of expectations for this online course and is subject to change prior to the term start. Topics include cryptography, program security, operating systems protection, database security, and network security. Students will explore current security models, internal and external security threats, privacy issues and security laws and regulations. Prerequisites CS430 (Operating Systems) CS450 (Data Networks) In order to successfully participate in this course, students are expected to have completed ALL of the course prerequisites. You need to have already completed the above listed courses (or their equivalents) before taking CS433. Necessary skills from the above courses are: 1. Understanding of basic operating system principles (CS430). 2. Familiarity with operating system constructs and techniques (CS430). 3. Understanding of the basic security algorithms used in operating systems (CS430). 4. Understanding of the methods used to carry data on a network (CS450). 5. Detailed understanding of security protocols used when transmitting sensitive information in a network environment (CS450). Course Outcomes

3 Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: Discuss the role of information in the world today along with the importance protecting that information from unauthorized disclosure. Explain the basic concepts involved with cryptography along with its contribution to the authentication and encryption schemes used to secure computer systems and resources. Discuss the protection of computer software in both an applications program and an operating systems environment including the identification and elimination of virus software. Describe methods used to secure wired and wireless networks from both the many well-known and documented attacks of today as well as those attacks yet to be developed. Describe the importance of the development of a security policy for the computer environments of today along with the contents of that security policy. Discuss the legal and ethical issues involved with securing computers systems, networks, and information. Grade Structure The course facilitator will use the following Regis grading scale for assigning your final course grade: A 93% - 100% A- 90% - 92% B+ 87% - 89% B 83% - 86% B- 80% - 82% C+ 77% - 79% C 73% - 76% C- 70% - 72% D+ 67% - 69% D 63% - 66% D- 60% - 62% F 59 or lower% The Forum

5 The forum is your primary link with other students and your facilitator. Your facilitator will post any information and/or additional assignments to the forum. You will communicate with your facilitator and the other students in the class via the forum. Each student is expected to participate weekly in the following four ways: 1. By answering week-by-week discussion questions. 2. By responding to instructor-initiated questions. 3. By posting questions about the course materials. 4. By responding to the postings of other students. You should minimally always check the forum for information immediately on Monday morning (It is a good idea to get into the habit of checking the forum every time you log in.) Academic Dishonesty Regis University is committed to intellectual integrity in its academic pursuits. Sanctions may, therefore, be imposed by the School for Professional Studies Undergraduate faculty, departments, or programs for cheating (defined as using inappropriate sources of information on homeworks or tests) or plagiarism (defined as presenting as one's own, the ideas, words, or products of another). Course Workload These online courses are designed for adults who have the necessary maturity to be self-directed learners in an accelerated format. The activities of this program are designed to facilitate the participants' understanding and application of the materials presented in each assignment. Online courses are NOT self-paced. Students are expected to review all course content pages in the week by week section of the course each week and actively participate each week in online discussions and homework activities. Students should expect a minimum of hours per week of study, homework assignments, and/or projects. It is important that students complete assignments by the dates specified.

6 Online Course Assignments CS433 Welcome to CS433 Computer Systems Security! Week: About this Page The Course Assignments page includes a schedule of assignments for each week of the course. This page was created so that you could print a list of all course assignments. (Remember to click directly on this page before you try to print.) The Course Assignments page does not provide all of the specific details and instructions that you need to complete assignments. For specific information about each assignment, go to Week by Week. Course Deadlines This course is organized around an eight-week program. An online week correlates to a 7-day work week, beginning on Monday and ending on the following Sunday. Thus, Week 1 begins on the first day of the semester, which is always Monday. By Wednesday of the first week, you must post an introduction in the discussion forum. Look for the topic entitled "Introduction" and post as a reply to the Facilitators message. You may be dis-enrolled from the course if this posting has not been completed by Wednesday. These are the weekly assignments that you must work on and complete: 1. Textbook Readings At the start of each week, Monday, complete the offline (text) reading assignment. It is essential that you read the textbook and study the examples carefully. Any difficulties encountered should be posted as questions in the Forum. 2. Week-by-Week Online Readings Read the online content pages in Week by Week. The online week-by-week readings are designed to supplement the textbook readings.

7 3. Weekly Discussion Questions By midnight Thursday, post answers to all Forum Questions. These questions may be assignments from the Week by Week pages, and/or additional questions posted by your facilitator. You may also be required to post responses to other students postings by Check the Forum at the beginning of each week for any additional postings required by the facilitator. 4. Homework Assignments At the end of each week, there will be a weekly assignments section. You must complete the homework assignments assigned in the odd-numbered weeks by the midnight Sunday of the next week (the even-numbered weeks). 5. Weekly Feedback Summary By midnight Sunday, write a Weekly Feedback Summary and post it to the Forum, as instructed in the Week by Week Assignments pages. Use these summaries to let your facilitator know how well you comprehend the week's material and any concerns you have. You may also respond to other student's feedback. 6. Quizzes A short quiz will be given at the end of each week (except weeks 4 and 8). These exams are timed exams will be available anytime beginning Wednesday and ending 7. Exams A midterm exam will be given at the end of the fourth week and a final exam will be given at the end of the eighth week. These exams are timed exams will be available anytime beginning Wednesday and ending You may use any textual, online, and programming resources available to you. It is available online from Wednesday through Sunday. The test is timed. You will have a 1-hour time limit, which begins when you open the test.
