2 Welcome Welcome to the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen- Nuremberg and, particularly, to its Faculty of Engineering Sciences. Since 1966 this community of engineering departments has grown into a highly-reputed centre of technological research. We are continually developing, advancing and integrating new technology for an increasingly technological society. Its five departments: Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Chemical and Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Sciences offer nine study programs at the Masters/Diploma level. Moreover, doctoral programmes are available in all disciplines. The Erlangen Engineering Faculty is ranked second nationwide in terms of highly-competitive and prestigious research funding awarded by the German National Science Foundation DFG. Against the background of an increasing need for interdisciplinary work in the world of engineering, many of the chairs within the Engineering Faculty work closely together. We also combine with other chairs of the university on numerous cooperate research and educational projects. Computational Engineering is a prominent example for such interdisciplinary educational programmes and is now also offering an international doctoral programme. The advantages of a traditional german university combined with a high-standard, interdisciplinary education in computational and engineering sciences makes the study of Computational Engineering in Erlangen an ideal preparation for the upcoming demands of the international engineering community. We are confident that we have a strong programme for applicants interested in engineering sciences and, particularly, those conscious of current developments in our high-tech world. Alfred Leipertz Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and chair of Technical Thermodynamics Prof. Dr. Günther Greiner Coordinator of the Programme and chair of Computer Sciences - Computer Graphics 2 The Erlangen CE Programme Computational Engineering is an innovative discipline fusing together the expertise of the well-established fields of engineering, computational sciences and applied mathematics. It was created in response to an increasing demand for high-performance computing in a wide variety of scientific and technical areas. In addition to the traditional methodologies of theoretical modelling and experimental exploration, simulation has also become an important tool in applications from fundamental research through to product development. This innovation demands experts who are able to model engineering problems in mathematical terms, and produce software to analyse them. CE studies extend beyond the classical disciplines of engineering education and applied mathematics to prepare students adequately for such challenges. The Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg decided to serve this need. Therefore, the Departments of Computer Sciences and Engineering Sciences within the Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Applied Mathematics have been developing innovative academic programmes in Computational Engineering (since 1997) Simulation of a free surface fluid Car in wind tunnel with LDA-probe 3

3 extending across all levels of university education. Within a Bachelor and a Masters programme we offer a sound education covering a broad variety of engineering fields for specialisation. In addition to these studies, research in this innovative field also receives high priority in Erlangen. The innovative character of this field necessitates a broad variety of general and/or individual solutions demanded by industry and research institutions. The increased need for interdisciplinary engineering research will require scientists who are trained to work interactively in several disciplines. Therefore, research in the CE field is not only promising and demanding but is also at the cutting edge. The CE International Postgraduate Programme Crystal growth furnace simulator Founded in 2004, a three year CE doctoral module completes the Computational Engineering study programme in Erlangen. This International Postgraduate Programme (IPP) has been founded as part of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Engineering, which embraces all postgraduate modules and harmonises all formal aspects of the doctoral programmes. This doctoral programme has been designed to promote and foster the training of young researchers in the interdisciplinary area consisting of engineering, computer sciences and mathematics and, furthermore, to qualify them for independent scientific work in multi-disciplinary engineering fields. This postgraduate research education is designed to obtain the prestigious German doctoral degree Dr.-Ing. It is offered to (1) students who have specialized in Computational Engineering in their graduate studies, or (2) to engineering students with a particular knowledge in computer sciences, and mathematics. Of course, a premise is the desire for research! Central to this module is the offer of a scientific problem, posed within one of the participating groups' research programmes, which has to be solved by the doctoral fellow. The research will be supervised by two mentors. As an educational supplement supporting the research, the programme will include several lectures, courses, and seminars which will be assembled individually and together with the mentors. 4 5

4 The programme is designed to take three years, including the preparation of the doctoral thesis. During this period, the supplementary educational programme will also take place. For external applicants, who only partially meet the demands of the IPP, one or two additional preparation semesters will be offered so as to adjust their qualification to the Erlangen CE Masters level. For final admission to the IPP, a qualification test has to be passed. Within the programme's duration doctoral fellows are expected to present their research at national and international conferences, and to publish their research results in international journals. In addition to the written version of the doctoral thesis, it also needs to be defended in a seminar within the Erlangen Faculty of Engineering. Although the general courses for the IPP will be offered in English, an integral part of this study programme will involve the free selection of specialised courses, some of which will only be presented in German. Therefore, a compulsory German language course will be included for applicants not speaking sufficient German. Every doctoral student will be assigned two individual mentors from two different disciplines who are responsible for the scientific aspects of the study. CE Research in Erlangen Research in the field of Computational Engineering in Erlangen is embedded within the more general engineering research in the participating departments mentioned below. Notwithstanding the recent development of this field, the influence of simulation and the involvement of ambitious computing within the traditional fields of engineering currently establishes this interdisciplinary influence in most departments in Erlangen. Unlike normal engineering doctoral projects, CE IPP projects will always be established interdisciplinary between two departments. Students are thus encouraged to freely move amongst various computer sciences, mathematics and particular engineering fields. Due to the focus of this research towards applications, a variety of local, national and international companies and research institutions cooperate with departments of the Erlangen Faculty of Engineering, e.g. Siemens, Lucent, BMW, AUDI, Ericsson, Fraunhofer Institutes. CE research is thus orientated towards current and future demands of international markets and provides a bridge linking university research and future employment institutions. For external applicants, a preparation phase is included: n Preparative phase (1 or 2 semesters, optional) - language courses, basic lectures and courses, orientation seminars, preparation of the individually designed research and educational programme n Research phase (4 semesters) including education programme (18 lecture-hours) - research project, individually selected lectures and courses, research presentations at national and international conferences, teaching activities n Publication and thesis preparation (2 semesters) For ongoing efficiency control within the educational programme, examinations will be taken at the end of the semester for each set of lectures, seminars, or courses. To complete the programme successfully, the quality of the research project must be worthy of publication in a leading international scientific journal. Requirements This programme is open to high quality graduates of the CE Master Programme in Erlangen and to external applicants with a comparable university-level education. Additionally, applicants with outstanding degrees in mathematics, computer sciences or in one of the engineering application fields offered by the participating departments in Erlangen are also welcome, provided that they have a special interest in and the necessary qualifications for interdisciplinary research. A preparatory phase is offered for the adaptation of knowledge. If the education of the applicant is not equivalent to the Erlangen CE Master degree, then access to the IPP is still possible via this CE Master Program. Since the capacities of the participating departments are limited, the admission to the Erlangen CE IPP is highly competitive. 8 9

6 The languages used in Erlangen are German and English. Good English or German proficiency is therefore mandatory and may be used as an exclusion criterion. German language courses are available in Erlangen. Living expenses in Erlangen are in the range of 600, to be seen as a minimum per month. The City of Erlangen Application Prospective graduate students should make their first contact via a pre-application form available on the Erlangen CE website A full application form is not needed at this stage. However, information on the aspired fields of technical application must be mentioned. There is no charge for such a pre-application. If you are considered for a further application, then more detailed information will be requested. Admission Admission to the IPP Computational Engineering in Erlangen is possible at any time point. It will be negotiated individually by the applicant and his/her mentors. Please note that regulations for entry into Germany may be timeconsuming. Admission decisions rest with the IPP Board and with the individual mentors. Since the availability of research projects is limited, only students of prime excellence will be considered. Financial Aspects For the time being, applications and the programme itself are free of charge. Current discussions concerning study fees in Germany suggest that around 500 per semester may be introduced in the near future. Graduate funding is not available within this programme. For obtaining scholarships, international or german funding agencies may be consulted individually, also with the help of the respective mentors. Erlangen has a historic baroque centre and is located amidst splendid landscape not far from the hills and forests of the Fränkische Schweiz. The cities of Nuremberg (a long established centre of arts and commerce) and Bamberg (world heritage town, UNESCO) lie about 20 km to the south and 40 km to the north, respectively. Bayreuth (renowned for the composer Wagner) is about 80 km away, while Munich and Stuttgart, the two largest cities of southern Germany, can be reached within about 2 hours journey by train or car. One of Erlangen's best known and best loved attractions, aside from the extensive network of cycle paths, is the Bergkirchweih, the local beer festival in spring, which attracts around 1 million visitors from near and far
