2 Background David Sackett and colleagues have stated that the practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. In many instances, there is a lack of strong evidence to support the therapeutic interventions utilised within Palliative Care. However, the amount of evidence has significantly increased, and the quality of evidence has also significantly increased, over the last few years. Nevertheless, clinical practice continues to be influenced more by historical anecdote than by contemporary evidence. The aim of this 2 day advanced course is to provide delegates with an up-todate, evidence-based review of the management of pain and other common symptoms. The topics have been chosen because of their impact on the patients quality of life, and the lecturers chosen because of their knowledge of the subject matter. On each day there is a session entitled What else is new?, which will highlight those developments not included elsewhere within the study day programme. The lectures will be supplemented with relevant reading materials, including slide presentations, reprints of articles, and reference / further reading lists. The course has been developed to address the educational needs of CNSs in Palliative Care, StRs in Palliative Medicine (particularly those about to undertake the SCE in Palliative Medicine), and Consultants in Palliative Medicine. The course organizers are Dr Andrew Davies (Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Guildford), and Dr Andrew Dickman (Consultant Pharmacist, Blackpool). One course is being held at the University of Surrey in Guildford, and the other at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. The two courses are identical in terms of lectures / lecturers.
