1 Windows documentation for BlackBerry Smartphones Introduction Tether is an application that allows your PC to take advantage of your Blackberry smartphone's data plan, allowing you to access the Internet on your laptop anywhere there is cellular coverage from your BlackBerry smartphone. Our core set of features range from easy setup, fast speeds, PC & Mac capability, the ability to work on all BlackBerry smartphones and carriers all over the world. Imagine being able to connect to the Internet at your favorite coffee shop, at an airport, at a hotel, on the road, at a park or even at home. Places where WiFi is not normally accessible or available but extremely expensive. With Tether for BlackBerry, you never have to worry about searching for Wifi connections or the cost of using them. Installation Installing Tether is very easy. In just a few minutes you will have Tether running on your BlackBerry device, with the ability to use the Internet anywhere! Important Note: Before you begin using Tether, please make sure you have a data plan on your smartphone. We advise you review your carriers Terms of Service agreement to review any limitations. Please be aware that some carriers charge for the use of APN data settings, to be certain we recommend you call your carrier for confirmation. Please follow these instructions carefully and do not skip any steps. If you get stuck on any steps, you can our support team or post on our forums. 2 To Install Tether On your BlackBerry 1. Open the BlackBerry web-browser 2. Enter this web address and press the 'Enter' key: 3. You will be prompted for confirmation on the download. Select the 'Download' button. Tether may take a few moments to download and install to your BlackBerry device. 4. Once Tether has been downloaded and installed to your BlackBerry device, you will be asked if you want to 'Run' Tether. Go ahead and run the software. 5. Tether should now be running on your BlackBerry device with a connection window showing USB and Bluetooth connection methods. To Install Tether on your PC 1. If you ALREADY have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on you PC please download the following Tether PC client: If you DO NOT have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on you PC please download the following Tether PC client (This setup includes the RIM USB drivers, no Tether Support help@tether.com Tether Manual : 2

3 need to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager separately.) 2. Make certain you re logged into your PC as the administrator or you have administrative privileges when you install the Tether PC client. 3. If you do not have Internet to download the Tether PC client please follow these instructions to download the Tether PC Client to your BlackBerry device and transfer the file to your PC for installation. a. While Tether is running and visible on your BlackBerry press the menu button and select "Download PC files". b. Select Windows, then select 'Yes' if you DO NOT already have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on your PC, then select "SD Card". Tether Support Tether Manual : 3

4 Select 'No' if you DO have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on your PC already. c. You must enable Mass Storage Mode on your BlackBerry to transfer the Tether PC Client setup over to Windows for installation. On your BlackBerry, click Options then Media Card and duplicate the following options on your BlackBerry: 1. Media Card Support: On 2. Encryption Mode: None 3. Mass Storage Mode Support: On 4. Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected: Prompt Enable those options, plug your BlackBerry into your PC with a USB cable and now your PC and BlackBerry should give you a prompt. Select 'Yes' to the Prompt on your BlackBerry to enable Mass Storage Mode, on your PC select "Open folder to view files", locate the Tether PC client setup and transfer to your PC for installation. 5 BlackBerry PC Running Tether in USB Mode At this step Tether should be running on your BlackBerry with the USB option selected. On the Tether BlackBerry highlight USB then click the trackball on your BlackBerry or click the 'Enter' key on the keypad to confirm USB connection. Tether Support Tether Manual : 5

6 On your PC 1. Disable the wifi (wireless) on your PC if equipped and disconnect any LAN (networking) cable if attached. 2.) Locate and double click the blue 't' Tether icon on your PC's desktop to launch the Tether PC client. 2. Once the Tether PC Client has been launched you will see a connection option window with USB or Bluetooth connection methods. Select USB. 4. 7 5. You should now be able to launch and use the web-browser on your PC or most any Internet enabled PC application. Running Tether in Bluetooth Mode (First you must pair your BlackBerry to your PC to use Tether over Bluetooth.) Task 1 - Verify that the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met To set up a Bluetooth connection, the following system requirements must be met: a. The computer must be running the Bluetooth software that comes with Windows XP or Windows Vista (see Task 2). b. The BlackBerry smartphone must be running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.1 or higher. c. If the BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, it must be running BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0 SP3 to higher, and the following IT policies must be set to 'False': Tether Support help@tether.com Tether Manual : 7

8 d. Disable Desktop Connectivity e. Disable Wireless Bypass Note: These two policies are located in the Bluetooth Policy Group. The default setting for these policies is 'TRUE'. f. If the computer does not support Bluetooth wireless technology, a supported Bluetooth adapter can be used (D-Link is not supported). For a complete list of supported Bluetooth adapters included in Windows XP SP2, go to the ' Microsoft Support Knowledge Base' and search "List of Bluetooth radio drivers that are included in Windows XP SP2". g. As of Desktop Manager 5.0 the WIDCOMM 32bit Bluetooth stack is supported. h. On the BlackBerry smartphone, the Bluetooth Options screen must display Desktop Connectivity and Wireless Bypass in the Services list. i. The Bluetooth enabled device must be paired with the desired computer. Task 2 - Verify that the Bluetooth software included with Windows is being used Windows XP and Windows Vista both come with a generic Bluetooth device manager. Verify that this native application is running or a supported Bluetooth stack. a. In the system tray, double-click the Bluetooth icon. If the Bluetooth icon does not appear in the system tray, open the Control Panel and double-click 'Bluetooth Devices'. b. If the 'Bluetooth Device' window appears, then Microsoft Bluetooth software is installed. Therefore, the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met. If the 'My Bluetooth Places' window appears, then third-party Bluetooth software is running. To meet the system requirements make sure a supported stack is being used. c. In the Control Panel, double-click 'Bluetooth Devices'. Tether Support help@tether.com Tether Manual : 8

9 d. In the Bluetooth Device window, click the Options tab. e. Select the 'Show the Bluetooth' icon in the notification area check box. f. Click 'Apply', and then click 'OK'. Task 3 - Set the BlackBerry smartphone to Discoverable mode Complete the following steps: a. On the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen, click 'Options' and then select Bluetooth. b. Display the menu and select 'Options'. c. In the Discoverable field, press the 'spacebar' until the field displays 'Yes'. d. Save the changes. Task 4 - Pair the BlackBerry smartphone with the computer Complete the following steps on the desired computer: a. In the Control Panel, double-click 'Bluetooth Devices'. For Windows Vista users, click 'Control Panel' > 'Hardware and Sound' > 'Bluetooth Devices'. b. Click 'Add'. c. Select the 'My device is set up and ready to be found' check box and click 'Next'. The Bluetooth software searches for any discoverable Bluetooth devices in the area. d. When the BlackBerry smartphone is detected, select it and click 'Next'. Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone cannot be detected, verify that all the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met. e. Select the 'Let me choose my own passkey' option. f. Type a passkey in the field provided and then click 'Next'. The following message appears on the BlackBerry smartphone: 'Enter a passkey for' Tether Support help@tether.com Tether Manual : 9

10 <computer name>. g. On the BlackBerry smartphone, type the same passkey as in step f. h. On the computer, when the 'Completing the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard' screen appears, click 'Finish'. Task 5 - On the BlackBerry smartphone, turn on the Trusted option for the computer When the Trusted option is turned on, 'the connection authorization message' does not appear each time the BlackBerry smartphone connects with the computer. a. On the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen, click 'Options' and select 'Bluetooth'. b. Select the desired computer from the list of paired devices, then click 'Device Properties'. c. In the Trusted field, press the spacebar until the field displays 'Yes'. d. Display the menu and click 'Save. Once your devices have been paired you are ready to use Tether over Bluetooth. a. 11 d. You will be shown a dialog containing all the paired Bluetooth devices on your PC, highlight your BlackBerry by clicking it in the list and select 'OK' to connect. Tether Support help@tether.com Tether Manual : 11

13 e. You should see Tether connect on your PC and packets begin to flow. Registering Tether a. Run Tether on your BlackBerry b. Select USB c. Click the BlackBerry key on your keypad to open the menu d. Select 'Register' e. Enter the Tether Registration Code you were ed during the original purchase of Tether including the dashes. If you do not know your Tether Registration Code please follow these instructions a. Visit the following Tether website link: b. Select the option "I forgot, lost, or need my Registration Code" c. Enter the address you used during your original Tether purchase. d. You will then be ed you Tether registration code. If for any reason you have a problem with Tether or simply want to re-install the software you may follow these instructions. 14 a. Uninstall Tether from your PC through the Add/Remove function of Windows b. Reboot your PC to allow the Tether service to be deleted c. If you ALREADY have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed please download the following file: If you DO NOT have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed please download the following Tether setup: d. Install the Tether setup you just downloaded. Re-installing Tether for BlackBerry a. On your BlackBerry click Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications b. Highlight Tether in the list of applications c. Press the BlackBerry Menu button d. Select Delete e. Remove battery from your BlackBerry for one minute f. Replace battery and let device boot. g. Install Tether once again by visiting the following link through the default BlackBerry Browser: Tether Support Tether Manual : 14
