You will explore patterns and trends of health in Australia, including inequities and inequalities affecting different groups within the population such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. You will use a holistic, ecological model of health to examine a range of influences on mental, physical, social and spiritual health and well-being, including social, cultural, economic, political, natural and built environments that can promote, protect or harm the health of communities. 1.2 Course content Health perspectives, discourses History of public health and the New Public Health Public health paradigms Health inequities and inequalities Health of Indigenous Australians Individual and environmental health determinants Exploration of public health issues using a holistic, ecological, salutogenic paradigm 2. Product: Three written reflections on class concepts and content Format: Responses to the assignment question/s provided Responses need to be in full sentences, clear, concise, and conform to accepted norms of grammar, punctuation, spelling and referencing. Criteria You will be assessed on the: Assessment Task 2b: Reflections on readings Goal: To develop your professional communication skills and to engage in structured discourse with your peers. Product: A communication exercise consisting of a written component and a short oral presentation Format: Written component words Oral component - 8 minutes with 2 minutes for questions and discussion Criteria You will be assessed on the: Solution-orientation, creativity and effective use of technology Applying technologies Assessment Task 3: Oral presentation Goal: To explore a contemporary public health issue using a holistic, ecological, salutogenic health model Product: Group oral presentation on a public health topic featured within the last six months in the media (i.e. land degradation, air pollution, homelessness, physical activity, social exclusion, discrimination, food security, food safety, injury, or other topics negotiated with tutor). Format: Oral presentation Visual presentation Power Point/Prezi/video or other medium as negotiated with the tutor Paper copy handed in with references (10 minimum, Vancouver style referencing) Recommended structure: Introduction, Issue Analysis, Solutions, Conclusion, References Criteria You will be assessed on the: Solution-orientation, creativity and effective use of technology Information literacy Applying technology

5 Assessment Task 4: Written report Page 5 Goal: To develop your understanding of the health of an Australian inequity population group using a holistic, ecological and salutogenic health paradigm Product: Written report on the health of Indigenous Australians Format: The written report will include the following sections: Cover page; Table of contents; Introduction; Body including a description of the patterns of health and illness amongst Indigenous Australians, discussion of the contribution of environmental determinants on Indigenous health, and potential solutions/implications in relationship to social justice and your future practice; Conclusion; References (10 minimum, Vancouver style referencing) Criteria You will be assessed on the: Information literacy 5.3 Additional assessment requirements Blackboard As a student enrolled in this course you will have access to course information on the Blackboard site. You are strongly recommended to log onto the course site on a regular basis. All course announcements, course changes, posting of course materials and grades (via My Interim Results) will be accessed through Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate internet access (either off campus or oncampus) in order to access Blackboard regularly and to complete required assessment tasks. Referencing The Vancouver style referencing, a style used in health sciences, will be used for assignments. Please refer to the USC reference library guide for information on proper use. Safe Assign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via Safe Assign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that Safe Assign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via Safe Assign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment A student s eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) The student has not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct

6 Page Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
