4 STUDENT TESTIMONIALS Student Testimonials Hear what our students say about this Degree and how it has developed them as managers and advantaged them in their current roles. "The confidence I have gained has been amazing, and the respect for achieving this Degree is still being shown by my colleagues around the world" Regional Manager (South) of Mitsubishi Materials and course graduate Tom Jones was attracted to the course due to its blended learning approach and that it fitted around his work life. Following a completion of a CMI Level 5 Diploma I thought the next logical step would be to enrol for this Degree. Tom researched Degrees in Leadership and Management online and chose this course over an alternative distance learning programme, The reason I choose Loughborough College was that I knew I wanted to and needed to study with an organisation where I had interaction with other course students and with the course tutors. At the start of the course Tom had some issues and conflict with the first assignment and even considered leaving. However through his dedication and with the support of course leader Mat Hobday and tutors Dan Apparicio and David Royal, he found his confidence and motivation and completed the course with First Class Honours. Tom talks about the best aspects of the course from a student s perspective, because the course was related to business and fitted around my working life, I never considered myself a student; it just felt a part of my working life. The College itself is a great place and has a great learning atmosphere. There was a diverse range of students from various backgrounds on the course and we all engaged quickly with each other which I believe was based upon the free atmosphere the college has and the freedom for debate. I can say with certainty that this Degree will enhance and further my career greatly, it has opened doors I never thought I could have ever walked through, the confidence I have gained has been amazing, and the respect for achieving this Degree is still being shown by my colleagues around the world. Ultimately this course has taught me so much about Leadership and Management; it has made me a better person and given me skills that are admired by peers and superiors. It has enabled me to sit in a room with people at any level and confidently engage and discuss business practices with them. I am so pleased with what the course has done for me that I have now enrolled my Business Development Manager. I have to honestly say I achieved what I did because three great teachers understood who I am and worked with that, I owe all the tutors a debt of gratitude for the support they gave to get me through it. Managing Director of Inspired Games (UK) Ltd. Christopher Jones joined the programme in April 2013 after wanting to validate his knowledge in the form of a Degree and to help develop his company. "The level of support and guidance from the course tutors has been excellent" What were your initial reasons for doing the course? My purpose for undertaking the BA Hons Leadership and Management course was three fold: 1. For self-fulfilment and sense of achievement, after I had passed on the opportunity to go to University after leaving college, choosing instead to accept a career position with a company. 2. To help me to develop my own company given that my business is partnering with some major global organisations. 3. Having gained a substantial amount of practical business management, leadership and business development skills with some international companies over 30 years and having operated my own companies, I felt the need to validate or 'cement' that knowledge with an appropriate Degree course and qualification. Why did you choose Loughborough College? After researching and evaluating various Degree courses in the UK, I had no hesitation in ultimately deciding upon Loughborough College because of the excellent reputation and that the course met my requirements. However, key to my decision was a conversation I had, upon initial enquiry, with the course leader Mat Hobday. I was impressed with the professional approach, genuinely helpful attitude and Mat's assurance of support. The latter was paramount to me given my extensive business and family commitments. Also, I knew that a significant amount of selfdiscipline and self-motivation would be necessary, so having helpful and committed tutors was fundamental to my decision. How have you found the course? The course has met my expectations in all respects; the days at the college provided an excellent foundation for each module and it has been enjoyable putting my expertise to the test. It has also been enjoyable meeting fellow students with varied business and academic backgrounds from around the UK and abroad. The level of support and guidance from the course manager/tutor Mat Hobday and marketing tutor Dan Apparicio has been excellent. The Loughborough library resources have also been a tremendous help for completion of the course work. How relevant has it been to the industry work you are currently involved in? The course work has been highly relevant to my industry. However, I believe that the leadership, management and marketing lessons could be applied to any industry; it's up to the student to use the theory from the tutorials and research conducted in a practical manner and apply it to his or her particular industry. Would you recommend the course to others? I would have no hesitation in recommending the course to others seeking to either progress their career or enhance their expertise with a highly relevant and practical Degree qualification in today's challenging global environment. Being equipped for the future with such a relevant Degree qualification is a sensible way forward Call employerinfo@loucoll.ac.uk Visit Call employerinfo@loucoll.ac.uk Visit
5 MEET THE TUTORS / APPLICATION PROCESS Meet the tutors What is your favourite aspect of the course? Dan: Personally, I enjoy lecturing the students and facilitating learning within the classroom. It s always good to see directors and managers having fun in a classroom, whilst learning and engaging with the subject matter. Finally, it is always good to see the student then graduate and enjoy the fruit of their labour that you have journeyed with them. Application Process Left: Mat Hobday, Course Leader Right: Dan Apparicio, Lecturer What does your role as course leader involve? Mat: As course leader for all of our Nottingham Trent University courses it is my responsibility to ensure that all the learners needs are met and that they feel happy with the course, their fellow students and the module lecturers. A positive learning environment is essential for all learners if they are to achieve their full potential and I feel that at Loughborough College we achieve this through our student support and dedicated staff who deliver on the BA Honours Leadership & Management course. As course leader it is also my responsibility to ensure that the quality of delivery is maintained across the course and that students feel they are gaining a valuable experience that will help with their current and future careers. Who should be interested in the course? Dan: Anyone who wants to further their development or career in Leadership and Management. The course is designed with people who work and who have 5-10 years management experience. The industry or sector does not matter as there is a diverse range of students on the course which actually makes the course more appealing. Having an understanding of other industries is an important factor in developing your own sectors. Mat: Anybody with 5-10 years leadership or management experience within their particular industry. Industry experience is crucial for this type of distance learning programme, as the course is specifically designed to enable those people who have worked industry for a number of years to achieve an academic qualification. What will students achieve by doing this course? Dan: The students will achieve new academic skills and have a better appreciation of their own industry relative to others in similar or diverse sectors. Debates are encouraged on the course which enables students to grapple with topical discussion areas. With a wide range of assessment methods students will learn new techniques to apply their existing knowledge base. They will clearly have the opportunity to develop knowledge and applied understanding of core areas of leadership and management. Mat: Learners who successfully complete the course achieve a BA Honours Degree qualification from Nottingham Trent University. Historically this has contributed to previous students gaining a promotion within their current organisation or a complete new career within an industry they have always wished to work in. The majority of learners who complete the course agree that it opens more doors for them and presents them with more career opportunities. Mat: From a student perspective, one of the favourite aspects of the course is the 10,000 word dissertation that learners have to produce, as it enables learners to focus on a specific issue within their organisation and undertake research with regards to how that issue could be addressed. Previously this has led to some of our learners gaining a promotion based on the research they conducted to address a particular issue within their organisation. Learners on the course also feel that by undertaking this module it further broadens their specific knowledge of leadership and management within an organisational context. What do students do after the course? Dan: After the course we have found people generally use the qualification to advance within their current organisation or they look to break into new industries/sectors. Students are able to be better at what they do. Application through the course is imperative and students are encouraged to apply the assessments to their own industries if they wish. This can help them in their job role as they do research that enables them in the industry or sector to be better decision makers. Mat: The majority learners continue to work in industry whilst also moving on to a Master s Degree qualification or an MBA qualification. By successfully completing the Degree more opportunities will occur both academically and within industry. Dan s advice for new starters: Do not be afraid of academic study we will give you all of the study skills and support you need to be successful. We just need you to engage with us and we will not only direct but show you how to get through the course. CV + TWO REFERENCES APPLICATION FORM TELEPHONE INTERVIEW In order to undertake the course, leadership and management experience within a particular industry or sector is essential. We recommend having a minimum 5-10 years management experience. To test this, we would want to see a CV and ask for two Referees to contact for references to support your application. In addition, you are also required to fill in an application form. These will be reviewed by the course leader who will decide if your application has been successful. A telephone interview with the course leader will then be arranged Call employerinfo@loucoll.ac.uk Visit Call employerinfo@loucoll.ac.uk Visit
