Information available from a range of sources: Household surveys (e.g. crime victimisation surveys, attitude surveys) Administrative data (e.g. criminal justice system data, services, ambulance data etc.) Note all different sources have strengths and limitations 3

7 Current and previous partner violence 2.1% (160,100) of women had experienced current partner violence since the age of % of women who had experienced violence by their current partner had a violence order issued against their current partner as a result of the violence. For 1 in 5, violence continued. 15% (1,135,500) of women had experienced violence from a previous partner since the age of % only experienced one incident only Of the 59% of women (667,900) who experienced previous partner violence and had been pregnant during the relationship, 36% (239,800) experienced violence during pregnancy, and17% (112,000) first experienced violence during pregnancy. 11 Violence against women recorded by police Female victims who identified as being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin experienced incidents of assault: almost five times the rate of female victims who were non- Indigenous in New South Wales (3,707 per 100,000 compared to 742 per 100,000); more than 11 times the rate of female victims who were non- Indigenous in South Australia (8,588 per 100,000 compared to 750 per 100,000); and more than 11 and a half times the rate of female victims who were non-indigenous in the Northern Territory (9,770 per 100,000 compared to 837 per 100,000); Source: ABS (2012) Recorded Crime Victims, Australia (cat. no ) 11
