1 Dear Parents and Students, These courses are designed for students with above average academic abilities. We require that our students be motivated to avidly participate in class and to independently complete their homework. Our group discussions are dynamic when all students in the small groups assume responsibility for their learning. During the ten-week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring, we explore three different units: Courage and Risk Taking, Fairness and Justice, and Family and Friends. In the summer we delve into the theme of Other Times, Other Places. Throughout the year, we read a variety of short stories to expand on the selected themes. The stories include fiction, nonfiction and historical fiction. Of course, there will be accompanying writing assignments and vocabulary development with every story. The writing instruction dovetails with the writing requirements in the public school and the core curriculum standards. In addition, the children love logic problems so they will be exposed to a variety of deductive reasoning problems to further develop their critical thinking skills. Ms. McDonald, a teacher of gifted and talented students for 27 years and owner of Turtle Creek Learning Academy and TC Enrichment, has written the curriculum. She teaches classes along with a staff of seasoned and exceptional teachers. We make learning fun at TC Enrichment. Students like to be here and interact with likeminded peers and a teacher who is deeply committed to their progress as students and as people. 5 Dear Parents and Students, I m Anekha Goyal, a former student of Ms. McDonald, a sophomore at Biotechnology High School, and leader of the Speakster program here at TC. Speakster is a program designed to help children learn public speaking skills, which are essential not only as students, but also as adults. I started learning public speaking when I was 8 years old. Since then, I have come a long way. My first milestone was being able to introduce myself to a group, and from then, I have gone on to give presentations in national competitions, speak in front of audiences of up to 100 people, and start my own public speaking class. Throughout all these experiences, I learned how public speaking is something used every day, whether in more formal settings like competitions or interviews or even in more casual settings like school and birthday parties. From this, I realized public speaking is something so important yet not taught in school. So, in June, I brought my public speaking program to TLCA in hopes of teaching more students. We worked on skills ranging from eye contact to voice modulation through activities such as plays, prepared speeches, and impromptu speeches. The summer was successful and lots of fun. Now, I am so excited to announce a fall Speakster program! I cannot wait to expand on the skills I have already taught and help more children create and develop their public speaking abilities.
