3 Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Information Arabic version of the Broken Cycle: Universities, Research and Society in the Arab Region After dissemination of the English version of the study to ETC relevant stakeholders, the study Arabic version was printed in support of ETC goals to enhance the technological and scientific knowledge content towards supporting decision makers with implementation across the region. Sustainable Cities are Smart Cities Concept to transform the society, and enhance its socio-economic development. The Prime Minister s Office of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Technology for Development Division (TDD) in UN-ESCWA entered into a cooperation agreement that aimed at the promotion of e-government in the Arab region. One of the main components of this agreement is the study Smart Cities: Regional Perspectives undertaken by the ESCWA Technology Centre which will be disseminated in the UAE Government Summit in February Activities 2011-
4 Innovation Development and Management "Arab Youth Scientific Innovation ETC presented "Arab Youth Scientific Innovation at the Rotary Club of Amman- Petra on 18 August The ETC Executive Director was the main speaker in the event to encourage investment in innovation and entrepreneurs among business owners in the region. Systems (NIS) is lacking data on the countries capacities and performance. Emerging from this need, ESCWA Technology Centre, ISESCO, and the Centre for Mediterranean Integration (CMI), with the lead of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and in cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS) organized Development of an innovation scoreboard for the MENA region workshop which was held on the November 2014, in Cairo. National focal points were identified to systematically nourish the Arab Innovation scoreboard with fresh relevant data. Towards MENA Innovation Scoreboard: While all countries in the MENA region recognize the importance of innovation in the road to a Knowledge Economy, an articulated understanding of National Innovation
5 Innovation Development and Management Landscape Mapping for Regional Incubation System ESCWA Technology Centre presented the Landscape Mapping for Regional Incubation System at the International Association of Science Parks (IASP) World Conference in Doha on 19 Oct IASP is more than 300 strong member association held its first meeting in an Arab country where best practices were shared with regional players. Entrepreneurship, Technology Transfer, and Commercialization of Intellectual Property ESCWA technology Centre presented the main contribution in the Entrepreneurship, Technology Transfer, and Commercialization of Intellectual Property workshop. It was organized by the Arab Open University of Jordan, on 8 Nov Short individual meetings with selected groups were conducted for guidance and follow up mentorship. The Intel Science Competition Arab World is a Pan Arab science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) yearly framework. It provides a forum for students in grades 9-12 in the Arab world to showcase their independent research and to compete for prizes. ESCWA Technology Centre Director was keynote motivational speaker at the award ceremony organized by Qatar Foundation and Qatar Education Supreme Council in Doha on 11 Nov 2014.
6 Innovation Development and Management ESCWA Technology Centre Contributed to the Junior Chamber International Jordan 4th National Convention on 21 Oct 2014 in Amman. The convention was directed towards entrepreneurs, startups and professionals. It aimed at training and tackling different subjects: finance, strategy, organizational structures, career path, guidance, digital copy writing, and law. ESCWA Technology Centre presented Intellectual Property Management in the national EU sponsored project on Technology Transfer managed by the Princess Sumaya University in Jordan, on Nov UN 2015
7 Regional Complementary ESCWA Technology Centre participated in the expert meeting for mobilizing Mediterranean Economic Diasporas which was organized by the EU ANIMA and its partners on September 2014 in Aqaba. Med-Generation working group from Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon shared experiences at national and Euro-Mediterranean levels to encourage Diasporas investment, migrants' remittances, to cooperate with local entrepreneurs in the three countries. This workshop project was conducted by ANIMA Investment Network (a multi-country cooperation platform for economic development in the Mediterranean), in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut, the Palestinian Information and Communications Technology Incubator, the Palestinian Investment Promotion Agency, and Jordan Investment commission. ESCWA Technology Centre Contributed in the Global Research Council in MENA region hosted by the Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science on 9-10 Nov ESCWA Technology Center participated in this meeting and tailored on regional contribution to coordinate and compile the priorities in the preparation for the annual GRC meeting. The global initiative aimed to formulate a sensible approach on research funding for scientific breakthrough and building research and educational capacity worldwide ESCWA Technology Centre Co-organized the workshop on Technological Capacity Building in the Field of Modern Technologies in the Arab Countries with AIDMO, LAS and Jordan Chamber of Industry on 15 Dec 2014 in Amman. This event addressed the latest modern technologies in the Arab countries. The ETC addressed the role of technology in the Sastainable Development Goals (SDG) within the UN framework ESCWA Technology Centre Contributed to the MENA Forum for Research Funders held in Cairo Dec The Meeting was arranged and sponsored by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the American University of Beirut (AUB), and France s Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD). The discussions covered the role and function of research funding agencies in Arab countries expected impacts from research the criteria used to assess and evaluate funded work, and management of funding opportunities.
8 Advisory Services ESCWA Technology Center Facilitated with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research a joint research project with the University of Jordan. After matching the KISR research project with a Jordanian counterpart in the University of Jordan in Nov 2013, ESCWA Technology Centre facilitated the contributions development from the University of Jordan to KISR on the research project "Gluten-free bread and on Vitamin D fortification of bread projects" suggested during AIDMO 14th coordination committee meeting. ESCWA Technology Centre: "Roadmap for the Competitiveness of the Jordanian Cosmetics Sector/Dead Sea Product" The study performed by ETC consultant will be published and discussed with Jordan Chamber of Industry that Initiated this request ESCWA Technology Centre finalized with the STI Observatory feasibility study for Yemeni Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Study conducted by an ETC consultant to establish the Science, Technology, and Innovation Observatory (STIO) for Yemen will be discussed and presented at the UNESCO co-organized seminar in 2015 in Cairo for UN efforts in the education reform project of Yemen. Report of the ESCWA Technology Centre activities for the period The representative of the secretariat gave an overview of ESCWA Technology Centre studies, databases, work networks, meetings, workshops and advisory services at the 28th ministerial session of EWSCA in Tunis September He presented a list of current financial commitments to the Centre and urged all Member States to contribute to its funding, to enhance its activities covering numerous Member States. He also reviewed the list of nominations sent for approval by Member States for membership of its Board of Governors for the period One representative commended the Centre s achievements, although it was newly established and was operating with limited human resources. Following comments on nominations and membership, Member State representatives adopted the list of nominations for membership of the Centre, taking into account suggested amendments and adding nominees from Member States not included in the list.
