5 1 Introduction The Link L1600 rugged Encoder/Modulator is a highly flexible product, which can be employed in a number of different scenarios, including satellite uplinks and embedded microwave links. It supports a wide range of encoders and modulators, including SD & HD MPEG2 & H.264, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-S2 and LMS-T (Link Research s proprietary modulation scheme, which offers higher bitrate and robustness in many applications). It consists of a main unit with a user-changeable (NB - Not hot swappable) RF section. L1500 wireless camera transmitter (L is not currently supported in the L1500 software but may be added in future). The MHz (L-band) module is intended for satellite uplinks, therefore operates in a slightly different manner to the other modules. These differences will be highlighted in the manual. This manual describes operation of the L1600 only. For details of the receiving end please see the relevant manual. This manual assumes a reasonable knowledge of broadcast and satellite systems. 6 2 Product Description RF Module (L-band shown) USB port Cooling fan Mounting plate Inputs/Outputs The L1600 is intended to be mounted using the plate supplied (for mechanical details see section 3.8). It is preferable, but not necessary, that it be mounted to a surface that can act as a heatsink. This will enhance the life of your product. It should not be mounted on a hot surface. The cooling fan allows the unit to operate in ambient temperatures of at least 50 C. Ensure that there is sufficient clearance around the unit to allow free airflow. Operation in higher temperature environments may be possible depending on what external cooling is available consult Link Research Ltd. if this is required. 3 Product Operation The L1600 does not have a control panel, as it is intended for embedded applications. Two LEDs provide an indication of the unit s status. There are 2 ways of controlling the L1600: Web interface or Serial port control. Please note that it is not possible to control the unit via the USB port. 3.1 Serial port interface The L1600 has an RS232 port (see 3.7.5) which can be used to communicate with a PC or similar. The protocol for this communication is described in a separate document, which is available on request from Link Research Ltd or from the website ( Where specific operations are described in this manual, however, the relevant remote control command will be given in this format: wvhdf;4; 3.2 Web interface The L1600 has a 10/100M Ethernet port on it (see 3.7.7) that can be connected to any standard Ethernet network. It will work with either a normal or crossover cable. In order to use the Web browser interface to control the unit, the following IP (Internet Protocol) parameters need to be set to match your network: IP address, Network Mask and Gateway address. These numbers will be available from your network administrator. The default values are as follows: IP address: Network Mask: Gateway: These values can only be changed using the serial port interface (see previous section). 7 Once the IP address has need set up, open one of the supported Web browsers* and enter the unit s IP address in the address field. A welcome page will appear, giving you instructions on how to configure your browser to allow it to work with the unit. You can then continue to the main page, which will allow you to control the unit. There are 2 web interfaces available: the default (or Advanced ) interface, or the simple Operator interface. The former gives you full access to all the parameters of the unit; the latter provides only the most basic interface, and uses large text and buttons to allow operation with a touch-screen display. Examples of the two interfaces are shown below (the Operator tab will be slightly diff. To switch between the screens use the large grey button in the top right-hand corner. See section 4 for more details. 3.4 Basic operation As an example of how to get started with the L1600, the sequence for transmitting a 1080/50/i HD- SDI video over an L Band link at 1GHz, using DVB-S2, is given: 1. Apply power to the L1600. Confirm that the Status LED turns Green, then starts flashing after a few seconds. 2. Connect HD-SDI source to the SDI input on the L Set the L1600 Video source to 1080/50/I (wvhdf;4;). Check for video lock (rvloc;;). 4. Set the L1600 modulation mode to DVB-S2 (wgmod;4;). NB DVB-S2 is a licensable option so may not be supported in your unit. 5. Set the desired output frequency (wufre;1000;) 6. For the L-band ( MHz) module only (all other modules proceed to next step): Start RF warming sequence by turning modulation on (wuout;1;). The RF led should begin flashing amber (ruout;; returns 4). After about 2 minutes it will turn to steady amber, indicating that the RF is in standby mode (ruout;; returns 5). 7. Turn RF on (wuout;1;). The RF led should turn steady green (ruout;; returns 1). Note that, by default, the unit will remember all settings after a power loss, including whether the RF was on or not. So, if power was removed while the carrier was on, it will come on again when power returns. It is possible to change the behaviour of the unit so that it always defaults to RF off after a power cycle (wulas;0;). Page 8 of 17 CL Issue 1 Link L1600 Series Manual

9 3.5 Default Settings Following a Restore Factory Defaults (Advance/System/Restore Defaults) it will be necessary to select the required operating mode and modulation configuration. This will take several seconds to update all the sub systems within the L1600. If the unit is licensed for HD operation it will default to HD, else it will default to SD operation. 11 3.6.2 Modulation Modes supported DVB-T The Table below shows the modulation modes supported for DVB-T operation, together with the corresponding bit rates. It should be noted that this corresponds to the total data rate which includes the video, audio and any user data. Due to the improvement that LMS-T has over DVB-T these settings give approximately 50% improvement of bit rates for the same level of ruggedness of the RF link. Both normal (64800 bits) and short (16200 bits) FEC frames are supported. 3.7 Connector Interface The connectors are described below from left to right in the figure above. The small hole by the RF LED gives access to an internal test button. This is for factory use only. 15 When mounting the unit, access should be provided to the USB port to allow for code upgrades and profile uploading. If necessary, it is possible to use standard USB cable extenders to route the connection to a more convenient location Weight 1.1kg including plate Cooling The integrated fan allows operation at ambient temperatures up to at least 50 C. Operation at higher temperatures will depend on the availability of additional cooling, for example on the mounting surface; contact Link Research Ltd. for further details. The fan inlet should not be obstructed in any way, and sufficient clearance should be allowed at top and bottom of the unit (as drawn above) to allow for air circulation. The fans operate in Auto mode by default they will only come on when the unit temperature reaches a certain level, thereby reducing noise and power consumption, and increasing fan life. They can also be switched to Low and High speed modes by the operator (wgfan). Note that the mounting face will get hot, so the unit should not be mounted on a heatgenerating surface. Mounting the unit on a heat-sinking surface will allow operation at higher temperatures and increase reliability. The internal temperature of the unit can be monitored by the web interface or serial command (rgtmp;;). This should not be allowed to exceed 70 C. 4 Maintenance & Firmware Upgrades 4.1 RF / Up Converter Module Removal WARNING Before removal of the L1600 module ensure that the external DC power supply is removed from the L1600. Also please take precautions to avoid static damage to both the removed module and the main L1600 unit. Avoid contact with the module connectors and store in anti static packaging. Remove three M2 screws Remove large M4 screw Withdraw module away from front panel Removing the four fixings from the mounting side of the L1600 allows the plate to be removed from the main assembly. The RF module can then be withdrawn from the main unit by pulling away from the front panel. Refitting is the reverse process; press the module firmly towards the front panel while tightening the main bolt, to ensure the connection is fully sealed. 16 It is recommended that the default settings are restored after a module has been changed. This ensures the correct parameters are loaded for the modules fitted. 4.2 Firmware Upgrades Link Research equipment is designed to allow for firmware upgrades providing new features and continual improvements during the life of the product. Please consult the Link Research website for details of the latest firmware releases. The L1600 unit, including any modules, can be upgraded via the USB port. The required file can be downloaded from the Link Research website and copied onto a suitable USB memory stick after first deleting any previous builds from the memory stick. First remove the power from the L1600 unit. Also remove the Ethernet cable (if connected). Insert the USB memory stick and apply power to the unit. The upgrade process will then start automatically; the LEDs will indicate the status of the upgrade process as shown below. The LEDs will indicate when the update process is complete. Power should not be removed whilst the upgrade is in process or your unit may be rendered in operable. When completed, remove the USB stick and cycle the power to the unit. A log of the upgrade is available on the USB stick in the file logfile.txt. This file is best viewed with Wordpad, rather than Notepad (on Windows systems). As the firmware is held on the module, this upgrade process should be repeated when a module is replaced, as the firmware may be of an older release. The release notes for the latest unit build will list the versions of the various software modules; this can be used to check that everything is at the correct revision.
