1 Cypress Creek High School National Honor Society Dear Student: Congratulations! Based on your weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, you are a candidate for membership in the National Honor Society (NHS). Students must be in grades 10 through 12 to be considered. Membership in The National Honor Society is based on your outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character, and below you will find a definition of each area. Please complete the Interest Packet after you have carefully read and thought about your contributions. Your response to these areas will be read and discussed by a committee of five faculty members. If you meet the qualifications in each area, you will be invited to become a member of this distinguished national organization. Complete the attached forms and return to your NHS sponsor, Mr. Olson in F-125 no later than 2:30 pm, Monday, March 21. Area definitions as defined by The National Honor Society organization: Scholarship: Defined as a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. If you have questions, contact the sponsor for your school. Congratulations and we wish you the best!

10 Definitions Page Include a copy of this page with each Community Service Record Form and each Character Reference Form Scholarship shall be defined as a student maintaining a cumulative, weighted grade point average of at least 3.5. A student of character shall be defined as one who upholds principles of morality and ethics; is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; and shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others. A student of character acts in such a way as to help rid the school of bad influences or environment; observe instructions and rules, punctuality and faithfulness both inside and outside the classroom; takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously; and constantly exemplifies desirable qualities of personality. Such a student will demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and reliability by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, conduct, attendance, etc.; avoiding cheating in written work and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others; and demonstrate perseverance and application to studies. A student leader shall be defined as one who is resourceful and a good problem solver, promotes school activities, contributes ideas, is dependable, and exemplifies a positive attitude about life. A student leader exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals, contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school, and inspires positive behavior in others. Leadership may be demonstrated in the classroom, at work, and in activities both inside and outside of school. Leadership is based on a student s participation in two or more community or school activities, election to an office or participation in special comities, or volunteering to assist others. Service shall be defined as sustained, voluntary contributions made to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Such service will be done through clubs/activities inside and outside of school. (Examples of service include, but are not limited to, participation in Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, volunteer services for the poor and aged, participation in organized school service clubs such as LEO club, or church service clubs. Participating in a church youth group, for example, does not count as community service if the youth group existed primarily as a social organization. If the youth group s main purpose was to provide an opportunity to serve the community by helping the poor or feeding the hungry, it can be considered service. In any case, students must come in direct contact with those being served. Furthermore, participation must be sustained and on-going. For example, participating at a car wash to raise money for a scouting troupe is not service: being a member of the scouting troupe for several years and participating in many or all of the activities of the troupe may be service. Likewise, being a DJ for a school Halloween party is not service; but, being a DJ for dance hosted by a community outreach program for recovering addicts may be service.) Any questions about character, leadership, or service should be discussed with the NHS chapter adviser.
