Rebecca Ahmed Mr. Riese Computer Graphics Technology ROY LITCHENSTEIN For our second Graphic Design project, we imitated Roy Lichtenstein s comics with our own photos. When I turned my photo into a comic, I used Roy Lichtenstein s Girl with Hair Ribbon, 1965 as an inspiration. My artwork using computer graphics reflects the work of Roy Lichtenstein s pop art in many ways, for example: the color scheme and thought bubbles. We used a computer graphics program called Adobe Photoshop to create the image as opposed to Roy Lichtenstein s method, which was using a paint brush. The process of using a program such as Adobe Photoshop to create a work of art inspired by Roy Lichtenstein s pop art has many steps involved which are not as complicated as the method Roy Lichtenstein used. There are many steps involved in Adobe Photoshop to create a work of art that resembles a Roy Lichtenstein painting. In order to create a work of art similar to that of Roy Lichtenstein s, we first took our photo and uploaded it onto Adobe Photoshop. We then made another copy of the photo except with this copy we converted it into a photocopy image to resemble the Ben Day dots that Roy Lichtenstein used in his paintings; we labeled this image copy here because this is where we will later use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to make layers and color in the image. When I made my photo into a photocopy, I did not make it too detailed, because I thought it would look better if it was kept simple and only the main objects in my photo really showed. Before I started to color my image, I used the internet to find a Roy Lichtenstein image that inspired me, the image I found was called Girl with Hair Ribbon, Once I found my inspiration, I started incorporating the style the colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black) were used in that painting in my own artwork. I mostly used the color balance menus and the levels to make the colors stand out more and to make the color black. When I started to color my image, I highlighted the copy here layer and I decided to start with my hair, for this and the rest of the image, I used the Polygonal Lasso Tool in order to outline the specific object that I wanted to color in. To make a new layer with only that one object I was coloring, I went to the edit tab where I clicked on copy and paste. Once I had my new layer with only the object that I wanted to color, I started using the color balance menu which was Crtl+B. In order to make my colors bold, I went to the color balance menu where I used the specific color at least 6 times in the highlights, shadows, and mid tones ; if the color was not as bold as I wanted it to be, I went to the Levels where I adjusted my output levels

so the color would be darker. I then went back to the color balance menu, and I used that in order to get the shade I wanted my color to be. I did the same for the rest of my image. When I finished coloring my image, we had to write a funny slogan instead of creating a text box. I made a thought bubble; to do this I first made sure the white shape was above the black on the background color, I then right clicked on the custom shape tool and the selected the Ellipse tool in order to do the little bubbles; to do the big thought bubble I went to the top and clicked on the custom shape tool and right next to it there were a bunch of shapes and I selected the cloud shape. In order to write my slogan, I clicked on the Horizontal Type Tool and I made a little box where I could type my slogan, we had to use the font comic sans ; my slogan was I can t wait for summer! Using the computer is much easier than painting a comic by hand for several reasons. One example would be making the Ben Day dots, Roy Lichtenstein had to paint every single dot by hand and it probably took much longer than doing it on a graphics program, because he had to do multiple paintings it probably took even longer. In my project, in order to get the Ben Day dots, all I had to do was convert the image into a Photocopy and I could even add as much or as little detail as I wanted to. This method is much easier than the one Roy Lichtenstein used and it took less time. By creating a work of art through a computer graphics program, you don t have to make sure that every Ben Day dot was the same color and same tone like Roy Lichtenstein did. For our projects, we were able to take a large section of our photo, and we could easily make it all the same color and tone without worrying about messing up. Not only did Roy Lichtenstein have to paint the comics by hand, he had to create thought bubbles and texts boxes by hand. On a computer graphics program, we were able to do the same exact thing except we already had the shapes ready and all we had to do was click on them and put it in our works of art. The computer enables us to create work similar to that of Roy Lichtenstein s except it was a lot easier than painting it by hand. My work of art is similar to the historical pop art era, because it represents a Roy Lichtenstein painting between the colors and the thought bubbles. I made sure to use the colors in a way that Roy Lichtenstein used them, so I can draw attention to the main objects in my photo. I also used the Ben Day dots that Roy used in his paintings in order to represent how comics looked like in the historical pop art era. I also looked at the painting that inspired me as well as other paintings to get a basic idea of how Roy Lichtenstein made the thought bubbles and text boxes. The slogan I incorporated into my portrait was I can t wait for the summer. I chose to write this slogan because I love the summer. I love how I can travel to many places, and meet new people. I was remembering things I have done over the summer and how fun it was.

This graphic design project was to create a work of art that represents the art work of Roy Lichtenstein, and the historical pop art era. We used the computer graphics program, Adobe Photoshop, to go about doing this. Using a computer graphics program is much easier than painting the images by hand, like Roy Lichtenstein did, because not only did it save us time, but we could be less precise. We did not have to worry about whether or not each Ben Day dot was exactly the same. The process of using the Adobe Photoshop graphics program involved many steps but it was still a simpler way of creating our own comic. Roy Lichtenstein s Girl with Hair Ribbon, 1965 really inspired me and incorporated the way the colors were used in that painting into my own image.

Antoinette Weiss Mr. Reise Computer Graphics Technology ROY LICHTENSTEIN This Roy Lichtenstein painting is called crying girl. This was the Roy Lichtenstein painting that I chose for my project. I chose this Roy Lichtenstein painting, because I thought it was a good example of a Roy Lichtenstein image. I used Adobe Photoshop to create my Roy Lichtenstein replica. In Adobe Photoshop I had to create layers. Each layer I had to I had to make a different color reflecting Roy Lichtenstein s work. The Adobe software made things a lot easier for me, and also helped me create an image that looked like Roy Lichtenstein s. The computer made creating this image very easy for me. There were many steps involved in Adobe Photoshop used to create a work of art that resembles a Roy Lichtenstein. First I had to make a copy of my picture in a new layer, and made it a halftone. Then I had to use the lasso tool to crop out whatever section I wanted to change the color of. After that I had to copy and paste to make a new layer, and drag it to the top. I then named my layer I had to go to the color balance menu, and change the color. Afterwards I changed the color a few times I had to go to the levels menu and change the output levels. After that I had to change the color a little more with the color balance until I was satisfied with the color I liked. Then I recorded how many times I used the color balance tool, and where I changed the output levels, so I can manipulate each color the same hue. I repeated that for all my layers until my whole Roy Lichtenstein image was colored. Then it was time for the thought bubble. In the thought bubble I wrote that I wish I had this class all year. I figured to put that because it is true, and I know my teacher would like it. To create the thought bubble I had to go to the text box tool, and selected the shape I wanted to use. Using Adobe Photoshop on the computer made it a lot easier to create my Roy Lichtenstein image. This process was a lot easier than drawing the image by hand. Adobe Photoshop gave us different ways to make our image look like a Roy Lichtenstein. They gave us tools like the color balance and the levels to create our image. We had the color balance tool which gave us the opportunity to change the color of the section of the image we wanted to change. We were able to cut and copy the section of the image that we wanted to make different using the lasso tool. Right there are two different way using Adobe on the computer made things easier for me. Then we had the level tool to help us also. The level tool gave us the ability to make our colors lighter or darker. We also had something called opacity. The opacity changed the way the image looked as a photocopy; it made it look more like Roy s actual paintings.

My work of art is similar to the historical pop art era, because it resembles a Roy Lichtenstein painting in many ways. The Roy Lichtenstein image I created is a perfect example of Roy s work, because I used the color scheme that he used for his images. I also made my picture into a photocopy so it can look more like Roy Lichtenstein s method of using Ben-day dots. I also used a text box; thought bubbles like Roy Lichtenstein did in his images. My thought bubble said I wish I had this class all day and I also said AHHHHH!! on the top of my photo using the text tool in the Adobe Photoshop tool bar. I thought this was appropriate for my Roy Lichtenstein image because he usually says things in his painting that are relative to his painting. I think that my saying in my thought bubble was very relevant to my image, because this was a class project. The Roy Lichtenstein painting I chose is called crying girl. I chose this Roy Lichtenstein painting, because I thought it was a good example of a Roy Lichtenstein image. I used Adobe Photoshop to create my Roy Lichtenstein painting. In Adobe Photoshop I had to create layers. Each layer I had to I had to make a different color reflecting Roy Lichtenstein s work. Adobe software made things a lot easier for me, and helped me create an image that looked like Roy Lichtenstein s. The computer made creating this image very easy for me. I thought this was a great project, and would love to do it again. This image is another example of Roy Lichtenstein s paintings.

Manuela Ramirez Computer Graphics Mr. Riese Technology Grades 9-12 Pop Art (Roy Lichtenstein) Pop art and pop culture refer to the art work that evolved from mass media in the late 195O s-196o s. People like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol created works of art reflecting package design, television, advertisements, comic books, and movie stars during the pop art era. One of my favorite paintings by Roy Lichtenstein is called Girl. This artwork really inspired my work to look like Roy Lichtenstein s art, but with the help of a computer. The process of using the computer to create a work of art by Roy Lichtenstein has many steps involved. There are many steps involved in Adobe Photoshop used to create a work of art that resembles a Roy Lichtenstein painting. We took an original picture of ourselves, and turned it into a half tone by clicking Flitter, sketch and then half tone patterns. In Roy s art he mainly used red, yellow, blue, and black. To create red, I clicked control B so that a color balance chart/menu appears. I moved the menu dial all the way to red a maximum of 3 times, then clicked control L for levels and moved it a bit to make it darker. Then once again I clicked control B, and moved it to red making a deep dark red. This I used for the boarder of the computer, the boarder of my keyboard, my bag, my neighbors pants, and the wall. I used some light yellows, and to do this I used control B for balances and moved it 3 times. To make a dark yellow I used the control B (color balance menu), moved it 3 times, then clicked control L for levels. Lastly I added a bit of black on the picture. To do this I just clicked control L and adjusted the levels a bit to make black. This was used for my neighbor s sweater, the computer monitor, and a piece of the wall. The black made my other 3 colors stand out. I knew where everything was because I labeled all my graphic layers. I made a thought bubble with a personal funny slogan as well with the text tool and autoshapes.

I could imagine how long it took Roy Lichtenstein to work on all his paintings, but we have it much easier. In my generation we have so much technology. Using computer graphics made it easy to create a replica of a Roy Lichtenstein painting. Filling in my picture with different colors was much easier than doing it by hand, it took me less time. This proves that using Adobe Photoshop helps create Roy Lichtenstein s art, and other forms of art easier than by doing it by hand the traditional way. My work is similar to the historical art era of Roy Lichtenstein. I used the 3 main colors Roy used for his work of arts which was blue, yellow, and red. I then placed the colors into a position where they would look nice and stand out next to the other colors like Roy did. In my work of art I used a slogan saying Red bull gives me energy, but doesn t take my eye bags away. I thought this was perfect since in the picture it did show my eye bags. In Roy s time there were many comics out with funny slogans also representing something that was popular. In my slogan I used Redbull since its well known in my era. Pop art and pop culture refer to the art work that evolved from mass media in the late 195O s-196o s. People like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol created works of art reflecting package design, television, advertisements, comic books, and movie stars during the pop art era. One of my favorite paintings by Roy Lichtenstein is called Girl. There were many steps involved to do a replica of Roy Lichtenstein painting, but using Adobe Photoshop made it easier and faster to do. Roy s work will be around for many years since it s so popular, and hopefully as generations go on, people will take the time to use the technology that s developing to make a replica of Roy s paintings, or other works of art.

Lia Cohen Mr. Riese Computer Graphics Technology Roy Lichtenstein Writing Segment A painting by Roy Lichtenstein that appeals to me is a work called Girl with Hair Ribbon. I think it s a bit different that his other works, because he added a section of stripes that were not separated by black. Through the use of technology, I created an image similar to one of his works. It s easier to do this using technology, it s all about simplicity. My rendition of his work uses computer graphics as opposed to a paint brush. The process implemented in order to achieve this look does not have many steps; the flip-side being that many of the steps have to be repeated multiple times. Start with a photograph. Once you ve transferred it onto Adobe Photoshop, put it through a Photo filter. The process from there is simple, but tedious. Choose your main color (keep in mind that only, red, blue, and yellow can be used), and begin cutting out layers. Once all your layers are cut, all that needs to be done is the application of color. Use the Color Balance menu (Ctrl + B), to get to your desired shade. Looking for black? Go to the levels menu (Ctrl + L), and mess with the output levels. Using a computer is more practical than painting with a brush, because you can undo. You have more options to work with and more colors to choose from. The image can be put through filters, and the hue can be changed. At the end of it all, if you are not pleased with what you ve created, you can always click (Ctrl + Z), and undo what you ve done. It s amazingly convenient. My work of art is similar to a Roy Lichtenstein work, because it depicts a slogan, and has colors that are similar to the main colors he used. It also has solid backgrounds, and more prominent foregrounds. I quoted Roy Lichtenstein in my textbox, because what better way to respect the artist than to quote him? It s important to my design, because it talks about being uninteresting. I believe that I could have made my image more visually busy. Girl with Hair Ribbon is my favorite painting of his, because it s slightly different, much like my rendition of his work is. He usually implements the use of a black line to act as a border between each section of his picture, but here, he used straight red, white, and blue, to create a striped effect. He took chances with his expression, and so can we.
