3 Challenges for water companies Digital futures Water services providers face unprecedented challenges to their businesses. Our climate is changing and increasingly unpredictable: energy costs are rising; populations and their needs for water services are growing; regulatory pressures to improve operational efficiency and to increase environmental standards are mounting; and economic uncertainty is complicating investment planning. The key to addressing these challenges lies in gaining a better understanding of current operations, asset performance and what the future is likely to bring. This understanding comes from making intelligent use of the data that is available, in exponentially increasing volume and variety, from a multitude of sources including operating infrastructure, environment, customers, equipment providers, weather bureaux and many others. Applying the understanding gained from converting data to actionable intelligence can produce dramatic improvements in cost efficiency, customer service and environmental performance. But this involves very much more than a simple IT project. It demands a profound understanding of the water industry combined with the ability to apply information technologies effectively to transform operations, asset management and investment planning.
4 Our services IT and Communications in water Arup s IT and communications systems consultants have helped many clients to navigate successfully through the labyrinth of choices concerning IT strategy, enterprise and systems architecture, outsourcing and cloud platforms, product and vendor selection, technology contract preparation and project governance. We strive to ensure that our experience gained and good practice developed in one sector is applied for the benefit of our clients in other sectors. This cross-pollination of knowledge and multidisciplinary approach is unusual but effective. Creating and using information effectively can improve operational performance, leakage loss, energy consumption, customer service and other areas of concern to the water industry. We can apply strategic, innovative thinking to plan your optimum use of technology. Arup is wholly independent. This ensures that our advisory and design teams are free to recommend the most appropriate suppliers, products and approaches to meet our client s needs. Our services include: IT strategy Enterprise architecture Information management Data visualisation Spatial analytics including GIS Building information modelling (BIM) Real-time monitoring and control Big data analytics Process optimisation Technology sourcing Data collection and transmission Technology policy and regulation

6 Global water expertise Integrated water management Arup has a formidable track record in working with water services companies throughout the world to create cost-effective and innovative engineering solutions to new challenges. We combine expertise in infrastructure planning and design with extensive experience, gained across a broad range of sectors, in exploiting information technologies to transform operational performance and cost efficiency. Arup has designed many of the world s most prominent projects in the built environment and across industry. With 90 offices in 38 countries our 11,000 planners, designers, engineers and consultants deliver innovative projects with creativity and passion. In addition to our IT and communications services for the water industry, Arup also provides the following services related to water and design: Strategy Catchment science Masterplanning and urban design Surface water management plans Water cycle studies Planning policy and spatial planning Water resilience strategy and planning Carbon management and climate change studies Landscape and green infrastructure strategy Economic assessments Sustainability assessments Asset management Smart infrastructure Project development and funding Feasibility studies 3D city modelling and visualisation Community and stakeholder engagement Development of partnerships and funding Commercial strategy and management Ecosystems services assessment Project design and delivery Water efficient buildings Green roofs and walls Water re-use networks Coastal management Flood risk management Natural flood management Integrated drainage modelling Mechanical, Electrical and ICA design (MEICA) Resource efficiency and waste management River design and management Water supply and treatment Wastewater treatment Water resources management Planning applications Environmental services Post-project appraisal
7 Dreamstime.com Selected experience IT & Communications in water Welsh Water Predictive analytics for pollution reduction Welsh Water were experiencing a higher number of pollution incidents than its target. Arup was engaged to provide a suite of services to enhance spatial data collection, provide risk monitoring and analytics and to create a new means for the public to report pollution and leakage incidents using smartphones or other devices. The outcome has been a marked reduction in pollution incidents and significant cost savings through the introduction of a targeted, risk-based, maintenance programme. Melbourne Water Water asset management strategy Melbourne Water has set a new strategic direction that outlines its vision and commitment to transforming its service delivery and commercial models in operation today to this end the Board and leadership team has established the Service Delivery and Commercial Transformational teams. We are developing an Asset Management Strategy to support the implementation of Service Delivery whilst delivering a step change in value creation for customers and shareholders. Yorkshire Water Real-time network monitoring Arup designed and implemented a complete mobile data collection solution to support the survey of over 4,000 Yorkshire Water sites. The solution involved the collection of structured geolocated asset inspection data using smartphone technology. As a result, Yorkshire Water is now able to make faster assessments of network performance to improve management decision making and is able to monitor asset performance, network flow and pressure at a far more granular level. International Water & Sanitation Centre Triple-S data integration and visualisation The client s aim was to better understand their data and feedback the progress of their projects to funders, staff and members of the public. Arup created an interactive web dashboard showing visualisations of projects across the world. The dashboard updates live from a cloud based database which integrates data from the project teams. The fully customised open source solution offers the client the ability to add additional data as their organisation grows. Welsh Water Alltwen pipebridge augmented reality Augmented Reality was used to demonstrate how a new pipe bridge would look in situ. This used the original design model and could be viewed on an ipad. The client wished to be able to show stakeholders how the new pipe bridge would look in situ. Arup developed a complex Augmented Reality visualisation from the original design model of the bridge. This can be viewed on an ipad to see the bridge in its proposed location. Bristol Surface Water modelling and Management Plan This surface water management plan (SWMP) involves integrated modelling of surface water flood risk and identification of high risk areas of the city susceptible to excess surface water flooding. A programme of further works and schemes in the high risk areas was evolved and a successful submission made for Environment Agency/Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs funding.
