1 RELATIONSHIPS REVISION GUIDE Key Concepts CHASTITY No sex before marriage to remain sexually pure for marriage. LOVE One of the most powerful human emotions that joins people together. RESPONSIBILITY your responsibilities are your duties, obligations, things you are expected to do or take care of you have different responsibilities to different people. COMMITMENT Dedication towards something, something you have chosen to do, making and keeping an obligation or promise. CONFLICT Confrontation between people, disagreements/arguments a break down of the relationship/stresses and strains. RECONCILLIATION Saying sorry (apologising) and make up or becoming friends again after an argument. Specialist Language Contraception Intentionally preventing pregnancy from occurring. Cohabitation living together without being married. Adultery A sexual act between a married person with someone other than their husband or wife. Vow serious promise made in front of God. Divorce When a marriage is legally recognised as ended. Civil partnership An official ceremony giving same sex couples the same legal rights as a husband and wife. Celibacy - Choosing to lead a life without any form of sexual activity. Love -Four Types STORGE Affection for things, sentimental love, a strong attachment often one sided. E.g. I love my new car/ring/pet. PHILIA - Love of friends and family, a strong bond between people e.g. I love my mother/brother. EROS Sexual or physical love between two people e.g. I love my boyfriend/wife. AGAPE Unconditional love or Christian love. Doing something and getting nothing in return. E.G. Love for a baby or The Good Samaritan showed agape he even loved his enemy. Contraception CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF ENGLAND Contraception is acceptable if sex is within a marriage and that both partners agree. It allows parents to plan their family, which is a more responsible. The Bible does not specifically forbid it. CHRISTIAN ROMAN CATHOLIC Believe that artificial methods of contraception are unacceptable as they are not what God intended. Sex should always be open to the possibility of creating new life. PAGE 1 OF 5

2 Roman Catholic couples should only use natural forms of contraception like the rhythm method. Sex should be in marriage therefore contraception is only for married couples. Most agree with contraception because Prophet Muhammad knew and approved of its use, the affects on the health of the mother, if it puts extra strain the rest of the family, preventing the conception of a child that may have inherited illnesses. However marriage is for children and contraception should not be used to prevent a couple from ever having children. This would be against Allah s will. For this reason some disagree as a child is a gift from Allah and so couples should put there trust in him. Christianity Marriage PURPOSE Part of God s plan for humanity. Having children to carry on the human race is an important purpose of marriage. The best place to bring up a family. The correct place for e sexual relationship. Provides support and companionship. Love should be involved. PREPARATION The couple will go to the priest what Christian marriage and family life involve a full understanding of what they are promising to do. Banns announce the couple s intension to marry 3 Sundays before the wedding. WEDDING CEREMONY Held in a church or chapel (in front of God) and taken by vicar/priest. 1. Hymns 2. Opening statement (saying what marriage is about). 3. Declaration (must say there is no reason why they can t get married). 4. Vows (promises made to each other and in front of God). 5. Giving of rings (to symbolise never-ending love) 6. Proclamation (now the couple are married). 7. Prayers 9 for the happiness of the couple). 8. Signing of the register (to make it legal). Islam - Marriage Mahr A dowry the sum of money a Muslim man gives to his bride before the marriage. Nikah The contract that the couple sign; it sets out the terms of their marriage. Walimah The family wedding reception. PURPOSE Bring a man and woman together to have children To share love, sex and companionship which is what Allah wants PAGE 2 OF 5

3 To form the basis of family life. PREPARATION The mahr is decided. The nikah is drawn up. WEDDING CEREMONY There is no set marriage ceremony but there are several important features that show it is a social contract that has Allah s blessing. Must be in front of witnesses; therefore usually in a public space E.G Mosque, community hall. Signing of the nikah (very important). It is a legal document and sets out the rights and responsibilities of the husband and wife. The husband signs it the wife does not have to be there but she should have witnesses there for her. Vows are exchanged The Qur an is read shows marriage is blessed by Allah and that married life should be based on Allah s teachings. Attitudes to Sex and Adultery CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS Sex is a gift from God. Casual sex is seen as devaluing both for the people and sex, and therefore is unacceptable. Most Christians believe that everyone should stay a virgin until marriage. Some Christian Churches accept sex before marriage as a way of showing love between a couple who plan to marry. ADULTERY Marriage is sexually exclusive. Adultery is forbidden in the 10 commandments. It is harmful to the relationship of marriage. Not a secure basis for children born as a result. Hurtful to the wronged partner. Wrong because God is involved in the marriage. MUSLIM TEACHINGS Sex outside marriage is totally forbidden. Muslims should not have sex before marriage, as this makes the family stronger (commitment, trust, stability). Muslims are encouraged to marry, enjoy sex (Allah s gift to strengthen the marriage) and have children. No sex outside marriage this includes adultery (both have severe penalties in Shari ah (Muslim) Law) Adultery breaks up families HELP AVAILABLE WHEN MARRIAGES GO WRONG The religious leader can offer help or advice. PAGE 3 OF 5

4 The community can offer marriage guidance or counselling. Older and more experienced couples can talk with and offer support. Family members can offer help and advice. A group of young married couples could have a support group. A pre-marriage course. DIVORCE ANGLICAN Accepts divorce as the law allows it. Jesus taught that God will forgive people who make mistakes. Will discourage remarriage (if do remarry a church wedding is again discouraged, it is usual for couples to have a registry office wedding and then a church blessing). ROMAN CATHOLIC Do not accept divorce A marriage can be annulled (marriage did not take place) in special situations. The couple made vows in front of God. The couple promised to be together till death. Believe that divorce is unacceptable as it is not God s intention and is breaking the vows made before God and the Christian community. Divorce is a last resort. Muhammad allowed it but didn t like it. The family should help the couple to be reconciled. If the couple do divorce the husband must say this 3 different times in front of people. For 3 months the couple must stay in the same house but not sleep together (so no confusion about any children born after the divorce). If they do decide to divorce the wife should be given the final part of her dowry. The couple should always behave well. Same Sex Relationships CHRISTIANITY Very divided some C of E say that Bible should be interpreted for today s society. Roman Catholics accept that some people are naturally attracted to people of the same sex, and those thoughts are not a sin; but homosexual acts are. Homosexuals should be treated with respect but must control their homosexual feelings by being celibate. Homosexuality is wrong and totally forbidden. Sex can only take place in marriage (Islam does not recognise same sex marriage). The Qur an (the word of Allah) sets out haram (forbidden) behaviour and in the scriptures homosexuality is condemned. Married life is at the heart of family life. The most important purpose of sex is to have children. PAGE 4 OF 5
