. lfl Vol. 23, No. 1 A Publication of the Fine Arts Program ALBUQUER PUBL/CSCHO~~~ December, 2020 APS Art Students Participate in the New Mexico State Fair Virtual School Arts Exhibition Although the State Fair was cancelled this year because of Covid-19, Expo New Mexico in coordination with the NM Public Education Department decided to have the Student Art Exhibition virtually instead! Usually the exhibition is displayed in the School Arts building at Expo New Mexico and typically APS students have over 1,000 entries.tis year APS was limited to 29 entries to be displayed on the State Fair website. But the good news is we were also able to post a link to the APS Fine Arts website that displays all 313 pieces of submitted student art.te one thing that didn t change this year was the impressive quality of the students artwork! Once the decision to hold a virtual show was made, art teachers around APS scrambled to get art from students.typically student art is selected and collected from the spring shows, but as shows were canceled and schools closed, not all of the art was selected as usual. Because the State Fair show was virtual this year, all student artwork had to then be photographed by the art teachers. Te images were then photoshopped when needed, and digital labels were added. Congratulations to the many art teachers and the APS students whose work is in the show! l;fbf!qu81flu8 Schools 2020 AP ~c TUDENT ART ENTRIES Te State Fair s School Arts website is still available for viewing at: All 313 APS student art entries to the fair can be found here: Elizabeth Bigman, 3rd Grade Sierra Vista ES Miliani Felix, 11th Grade Rio Grande HS Kailee Tietjen, 3rd Grade, SY Jackson ES Joe Gershin Performing Arts Manager Zones 1& ext APS Fine Arts Program Leadership Team TBA Visual Arts Manager Zones 1&4 Gina Rasinski Director ext Denise Rudd Visual Arts Manager Zones 2& ext Antonio Romero Performing Arts Manager Zones 2& ext

The Show Must Go On! Te 10th annual APS Elementary Honor Choir will look diferent this year. APS s Fine Arts Department strives to engage students in the arts with enriching opportunities even during these difcult times in education. Every year, music teachers across the district nominate 4th and 5th grade students to participate in Honor Choir. Students work with their teachers for several months leading up to the concert day to memorize music, while elementary music teachers create arrangements of songs and provide live accompaniment on concert day. Honor Choir allows students the opportunity be a part of a music ensemble and work with guest conductors. Te culminating concert is performed in front of a live audience. Tis year, to ensure safety among staf and families as well as adhere to mandated safety protocols in place for Covid-19, the Honor Choir will take place on a virtual platform. Fifth graders will be nominated at elementary schools where there is a current music teacher. Teachers will work with students to learn music that they will provide online. Te songs chosen this year have been granted copyright permissions for virtual streaming. In the early spring students will record their individual parts via the safety protocols set in place and a music engineer will digitally compile and master recordings to create a video performance of the pieces. Set the date for April 30th, which will be the grand streaming event. Online platforms and event time TBA! Additionally, the Fine Arts Department is working with city project coordinators to possibly show the performance in a drive-in venue as well. Te show must go on! Meet the New Digital Resource Teacher With schools moving into a virtual learning environment, the Fine Arts teachers are fnding new support in a familiar face. Perry Heimer joined the Fine Arts Department as the new Digital Resource Teacher in August After a 20-year Air Force career as a photographer and photo editor, Perry earned a Masters in Art Education from UNM. Perry was hired in 2003 into the APS Elementary Itinerant Art Program where he taught students at Double Eagle and Tomasita Elementary Schools. Perry then taught art at Eubank Elementary School (now named Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts) for four years before taking a position at Manzano High School in Perry taught Art 1, Drawing, and Illustration that frst year but has been teaching Digital Photography at Manzano for the last 11 years. Perry will be working closely with the K-12 visual arts teachers and the fne arts managers to coordinate the three district art shows, Art is Elementary, Metro Youth Art Exhibit, and Focus on Youth, as well as the Annual New Mexico State Fair Art Exhibit. We are excited to have him join the team! Metro Youth Art Exhibit The Calm Before the Storm Te district s popular secondary art show, Metro Youth Art Exhibit went on without a hitch well, almost. Beginning on February 21st, the show was open to the public and for the frst time, was housed at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center.Te location served as the perfect backdrop for almost 1,200 artworks in 17 diferent categories created by talented high school and middle school students throughout APS. Te opening reception was well attended by parents, students, teachers, administrators, and board members who turned out to admire the work. Another frst for the SY Metro Show was the addition of two new awards:te Superintendent s Choice APS elementary music teacher James Macklin prepares to entertain the crowd at the Metro Youth Art Exhibit, while Garret Gershin enjoys some of the snacks generously provided by APS Capital Master Plan. Award, and the Fine Arts Director s Choice Award won by Monet Barela ( Jimmy Carter MS) and Mario Campos (Albuquerque HS) respectively. An awards ceremony for students receiving place ribbons and merit awards was scheduled to be held on March 13th, the very same day the frst public health order was put into efect banning gatherings of over 100 people. Deeply saddened by the cancellation of the in-person ceremony, the APS Fine Arts Department felt strongly that the students needed to be recognized for their hard work. A virtual slide show was created to showcase the merit award and place winners that was posted on the district s main website in mid-september. As we move into November, there are many question marks regarding what this year s Metro Youth Art Exhibit will look like. But one thing is certain it will still refect the beautiful work and creativity of the students and teachers in Albuquerque Public School s visual arts programs. 2

ARTS Integration and Lew Wallace Elementary School APS Arts Integration Resource Teachers are supporting the district by ofering arts integrated teaching approaches that support general education content. The 3 Arts Integration Resource teachers collaborate with general education teachers to develop and implement lessons that help students construct and demonstrate understanding of content through drama, music, and art. Students and teachers engage in a creative process that unites art forms with other subjects, while meeting evolving objectives in each. Please contact us if you are interested in working with one of the Arts Integration Resource Teachers! Rosy Poling, (Visual Art) has teamed up with 1st grade Lew Wallace teacher, Dannie Montoya, to integrate ELA Standards with art. This unit focuses on strengthening students recall of characters, sequencing of events, and the moral in stories. Reading literature from the Benchmark curriculum, students have been analyzing illustrations with Visual Thinking Strategies (a highly-engaging, language-building, questioning/discussion technique) and drawing characters, scenes and settings through the medium of comics. Carla Haynes, (Music) is currently working in the ELA Benchmark curriculum with 2nd grade Lew Wallace teacher, Iliana Kimberle. They are integrating music and ELA with the teaching of characters and points of view using the engaging strategies of Artifact, Move and Groove (using music from the setting of the story), and role play. Joni L. Lloyd, (Drama) is working with Mr. Daniel DeLaO, a kindergarten teacher at Lew Wallace Elementary. Joni is using The Actor s Toolbox (Acting Right by Sean Layne, 2017) and the Drama Works! curriculum to support basic reading skills. The focus being letter/sound recognition, vocabulary acquisition, and phonemic awareness. She is also working on memory and attention to support the students learning. Carla Haynes and Iliana Kimberle lead the 2nd grade students at Lew Wallace ES in a movement activity. The Unifed ARTS Resource Library is open! Currently all materials are being checked out virtually so that we may keep operating as safely as possible. While patrons are not allowed physically in the space, our catalogue is available online and can be viewed any time! 4 Instruments for In-Home Learning Cinamon Gentry, Hovey Corbin, Denise Rudd, and Renee Gallegos preparing instruments to be delivered to the APS middle school and high school band and orchestra students. After the APS Board of Education s decision to move to remote and hybrid learning, the Fine Arts Department set out to ensure that every student in a music class would have access to an instrument at home. This necessitated reaching out to secondary teachers in order to fnd out how many, and what specifc instruments needed to be ordered to meet the needs of our APS students. The Fine Arts Department ofce staf came together in groups of 5 or 10, depending on the Governor s current health orders, to process all of the instruments. So far 1,337 instruments and 174 bows have been ordered, received, engraved, inventoried, and delivered across the district. More instruments are constantly being ordered as instrumentations shift and beginners across the district are settling into their instruments. Keyboards all ready to be delivered into the hands of the students. Students and Teachers Put Their Super-Powered Drawing Skills to the Test Batman! Superman! Spider Man! When asked to name super heroes that they knew, the students at Manzano Mesa ES could hardly sit still! Super heroes and super villains are certainly a topic not typically explored or discussed in school. Richard Jenkins is a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist and cartoonist extraordinaire. He was in Albuquerque recently teaching Super-Powered Stories: Character and Story Creation for Students with (and without) Disabilities. Richard has found that the popular art form of cartooning provides an exciting and accessible tool for students to build their expressive, cognitive, and social capacities while unlocking their story-making potential. His unassuming approach works with all students even if they have had no previous drawing experience. Mr. Jenkins conducted his presentation to an eager group of a dozen 4th and 5th grade students with disabilities in Carolyn del Castillo s and Sabrina Somarribas classes. He started by having the students generate a list of commonly known super heroes and super villains along with their super powers. Next, he modeled drawing several geometric shapes, variously-shaped lines, patterns, and then had the students draw them on their paper. With their confdence frmly in hand, Richard then had the students divide a clean sheet of paper into four quadrants. Choosing from the previously-drawn shapes, the students drew a large shape in each quadrant to form the body of their heroes and villains. They then added arms, legs, head, hands, and feet to complete the cartoon character. Richard then facilitated a conversation with the students and together they created several word banks and word webs to get the creative juices fowing. These words would be used at a later time to name their character and to add story elements to help them create their own super-powered stories. Later that evening, Mr. Jenkins changed gears and presented the same concept/process to a roomful of teachers of all grade levels and content areas. The same level of enthusiasm could be felt in the room of adult learners as well! Richard was able to engage the teachers in deeper conversations and more thought-provoking discussions surrounding concepts such as what is a real-life hero? and heroes vs. villains vs. anti-heroes. This was the last of fve Arts Integration Workshops as part of a partnership between Albuquerque Public Schools and the Kennedy Center for the school year. 4 APS Fine Arts Program Staff Deanna Amend Choir Resource Teacher ext Perry Heimer Digital Resource Teacher ext Janda Hindi Art Resource Teacher ext Cinamon Gentry Art Resource Teacher ext Anna Smock Music Resource Teacher ext Emily Steinbach Music Resource Teacher ext Michael Rasinski Special Education Resource Teacher ext Hovey Corbin Inventory Tech -Music ext Kirsten Ensafdaran Inventory Tech -Art ext Audra Chaplin Funding Tech -Art ext Andrew Binns Funding Tech -Music ext TBA Secretary US Mail: Fine Arts Office 912 Oak Street SE Building M Albuquerque, NM 87106

ecademy and Fine Arts Tis year APS expanded ecademy to accommodate the increased need for families to have a fully immersive online option for elementary and middle school students and we are excited that these students have been given the opportunity to have both art and music instruction as part of their core curriculum. We would like to introduce you to the K-8 ecademy art and music team. Anndra McCorkle, Jennifer Gaillard-Carrillo, and Mallory Kucala make up the elementary art team with Cat Woo, Jan Delgado, and Julie Kerbleski teaching elementary music. Born in California but raised in New Mexico, Anndra Nise McCorkle began drawing and teaching professionally at the age of 22 and has received numerous awards and honors for her work. She graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art and the University of New Mexico, and holds a BA in Art Education and an MA in Special Education. She has 34 years of educational experience and enjoys teaching in the Albuquerque Public School District. Jennifer Gaillard-Carrillo was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, but has always had a love for the Southwest. She has a Bachelor s and Master s degree in Art Education and has a wealth of experience from many diferent educational settings. Jennifer strives to have a fun and creative approach to learning about visual art and art history and is excited to embark on this uncharted journey of virtual learning. Mallory Kucala received her BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture and a minor in Art History from the University of Arizona in She then went on to earn her Master s in Secondary Education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaf. Mallory lived in Colorado for 5 years, where she taught art in several schools while her husband fnished his PhD and is now excited to have the opportunity to teach art to the students at ecademy K-8. Children are the flowers It s amazing how of the Garden! Cat served as vice president, president, and past president of the New Mexico chapter of the American Orf-Schulwerk Association and is currently the general music vice president-elect of the New Mexico Music Educators Association. Cat has worked with APS elementary music students for 10 years and we know will be a great asset to the ecademy K-8 team. Jan Delgado taught for over 20 years with APS and has failed twice at retirement. Like the Energizer bunny, she just keeps going, and going, and going What keeps her coming back and motivated to teach elementary music is the kids and the joy of helping them learn about music while having fun. Julie Kerbleski is a Michigan State University graduate and played in the marching band while in college. Julie had been a frst grade general education teacher and a band director before she joined APS Fine Arts where she has taught elementary music for the last 5 years. She looks forward to learning new strategies to continue to make music in this new virtual environment where she believes that ecademy has taught her that virtually anything is possible! Its great to see the inside of student s homes and get to know them on a deeper level, as well as their fmilies. - Cat Woo No matter what culture, creed, age, or in person and online, they (kids) just want to learn how to create and perform music and have fun doing it. - Jan Delgado My students get to move, play and sing, and we do this while all interacting online. It is an interesting challenge, but it appears that the students enjoy the break from their daily routine and a chance to have some fun with others. - Julie Kerbleski Middle school students at ecademy K-8 have the opportunity to work with Arianna Kirk for art and Nathan James Matherne for music. Arianna Kirk was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky and received her BFA with an emphasis in painting from Murray State University in She then received certifcations in general elementary education and K-12 art education from Midwestern State University in Arianna was an education director for a small arts center for three years before becoming a middle school art teacher in My experience teaching with ecademy K-8 has been a good one. The administration is very supportive and my co-workers are all clearly passionate about students and are always looking for ways to connect and make learning fun and meaningful. - Arianna Kirk 5

ecademy and Fine Arts Continued for Previous Page Burkburnett,TX. Now in Albuquerque, Arianna is returning to middle school art after working as an elementary art teacher with the APS Fine Arts Department last year. In-demand music clinician and adjudicator, Nathan Matherne, was the director of bands at Cibola High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he served from 2009 to During his tenure at Cibola High School he also taught a variety of other classes including Orchestra, Jazz Band, Color Guard, Percussion Ensemble, and his newly formed Caribbean Steel Pan Band. We are so glad that the students at ecademy K-8 have the opportunity to work with all of these amazing fne arts educators in this new virtual learning environment. I am very motivated by the success and potential for the new school. - Nathan Matherne Introducing Eddie Van Halen Everyone please give a warm welcome to the newest member of our Fine Arts family, Eddie Van Halen. He s a 2020 Ford Transit with a stunning new wrap, an 1100lb lift gate, and a smile that could charm the masses. No doubt you ll see him all across the district, making deliveries, and posing for pictures at concerts, art shows, and any number of other Fine Arts events. Eddie would like to thank his family and friends for supporting him on his journey, and is especially grateful for the hard work done by Kizito Wijenje at Capital Master Plan and Nic Lueras in Graphics that helped him fnd a forever home in Fine Arts. Nothing Can Keep Us From Singing Together Chorus, by nature, must be a group activity. So, what s a choir to do when it can t stand elbow to elbow and blend voices? Right now, it s impossible to be physically gathered to enjoy the community, collaboration, and friendship that choir cultivates. Middle school choir directors and singers across the entire APS district decided not to dwell on impossibilities, but instead, to celebrate their new opportunities. Remote learning presents the challenges of internet lag and the inability for more than one computer mic to sync together in real time. Virtual choir presentations take the individual performances of singers and blend them into one audio/video production. It s an advantage to not have to tackle transportation issues or fnd a venue large enough for a big chorus and audience. To avoid copyright compliance issues related to posting a musical work on social media, Deanna Amend, APS Choir Resource Teacher, composed I Close My Eyes and Sing especially for APS middle school singers to share. I was deeply moved by the daily difculties our choristers and directors are up against. I ve known many singers who tell me they were motivated to come to school each day, because they looked forward to choir and singing. Tis song speaks of the hope I have in knowing we will be able to sing together again. Until then, I can close my eyes and imagine my friends singing with me, our voices blended in beautiful harmony. Trough this project, Mrs. Amend hopes that singers are experiencing the important social-emotional connection of creating a beautiful artistic work together. December 2, 2020, the plan is for middle school singers and directors to present their choir video at the APS school board meeting and on the APS website and YouTube channel. It s their way of thanking the school board, APS administrators and staf, the APS Fine Arts team and the greater Albuquerque community for their support of singing and chorus as an important art form. As the song lyrics powerfully say, Nothing can keep me from singing with you.
