4 task 1 - preparation preparing your stairs for stair make-over is simple. remove any existing carpet and underlay together with any grip strips, staples or nails and any spacers which may have been added to the treads or risers. don t worry about any small holes, cracks or damage to treads and risers as stair make-over will quickly and easily cover these. do any painting you want to do before installing the new treads and risers it s a lot easier and you don t need to worry about getting paint on your new stairs. if the stairs have been painted scrape off and loose paint, and brush the stairs to leave a clean dry surface. task 2 numbering treads & risers using a maker pen number the treads and risers (this will help ensure you get a perfect fit later on as you measure and mark out individual stair make-over treads and risers for cutting and later fixing in place) start by numbering the first tread 1 and continue to the top of the stair (the first riser is 0) Oops! make sure you allow time for the paint to dry completely before starting work on stair make-over. Check on the paint tin for the drying time.

5 task 3a measuring and marking out the treads installing stair makeover on straight stairs is a very simple task. now you have numbered your treads and risers you can begin the task of measuring for stair makeover and we suggest working from the bottom to the top of your staircase. measuring accurately to accurately measure either the width or height measure the depth of each tread from the front to the back and add 50mm to allow for the bullnose on the front of the stair make-over treads, then simply measure the width (see handy tip) mark Mark out the the measurements onto a stair make-over tread which you number (we suggest writing on a piece of masking tape) to correspond with the number on the original tread on your staircase task 3b measuring and marking out the risers measure the distance from the top of each tread to the underside of the nose on tread 2 and take off 10mm and then simply measure the width mark out the measurements onto a stair make-over riser and number in the same way you have just done with the tread. top tip when measuring and marking out always start from the front left corner of a tread and the bottom left corner of the riser that way all the cuts will be in the same place. Treads depth Risers height Oops! we know you are keen to get on with things but is important that you measure and cut all the stair make-over treads and risers to size before you move on to the next task first measure from one side of the stair to around the middle and draw a line then from the other side measure to the line you have just drawn. add the two together and you have the perfect measurement without worrying about trying to bend the tape into the corner on one side of the stair!!

6 task 4 cutting stair make-over treads & risers to fit your staircase stair make-over has been designed to be simple to install with the minimum fuss and now we move onto the final marking up and cutting of the treads and risers using the line you marked out earlier to show the required width of the tread extend the line down the front of the bull nose with a set square to make sure you have a true line to cut along, then simply cut along the pencil lines you have drawn on each tread using a fine tooth saw or jigsaw with a down-cutting blade cutting the risers is just as easy now is a great time to glue the aluminium profile supplied into the top stair profile to allow time for it to cure properly, even though this will be one of the last things to fit it will save time later carefully sand the cut edges as these will be visible once the installation is complete the cuts you have made on the long edges of both the treads and the risers are hidden, so don t need to be quite so precise use strips of masking tape to secure the profile whilst the glue cures top tip cut the first tread and riser along the long edge first, these will be hidden so it s a great chance to practice getting a clean cut! dry fit, just to make sure! before moving on to the next task carefully position all the treads and risers on to the staircase to make sure everything fits and make any adjustments before moving onto the installation stage Oops! remember measure twice and cut once

7 task 5 gluing stair make-over in place now you are sure everything will fit you can get on with gluing your stair make-over in place the stair make-over system uses a specially formulated water activated adhesive to hold treads and risers firmly in place and has gap filling and sound deadening properties, carefully follow the instructions on how much to use and drying times to make sure your new stair is safe, durable and properly secured IMPORTANT because of the design of the stair make-over system it is vital that you glue treads and risers in place in the right order starting with the riser 0, then tread 1, riser 1 and so on until you reach the top apply a bead of adhesive to your riser spaced at regular intervals mist lightly with water from the spray bottle and push firmly in to position. apply adhesive to the stair and then mist lightly with water and push the stair make-over tread firmly into position continue until all treads and risers are in place finishing off to cover any gaps or rough edges the stair make-over range includes white and coloured matched sealants. simply apply a bead of sealant around the visible edges of treads and risers, removing any excess with a pallet knife. adding some detergent to water in a spray bottle and spraying this over the sealant will make it much easier to get a smooth finish. top tip put adhesive on a maximum of 2 treads and risers & fix in place at any one time Oops! don t put adhesive too close to the edge of treads and risers, as it may squeeze out and can be messy to clean up (impossible if not tackled quickly with a damp cloth).

8 task 6 finishing with a top stair profile the final task in your installation is to fit the top stair profile which you glued earlier. the aluminium threshold provides a safe, visible and tactile brake between the stairs and landing. measure the distance across the top of your stair taking account of any stringers and skirting s you may need to cut the top stair profile to rough length first before marking out for the final fitting. a quick and simple way to mark out for an accurate fit without making a paper template is to hold the top stair profile above the final position and mark with a soft pencil the part to be cut to clear any obstacles, then simply cut with a hacksaw. double check the fit and make any further adjustments as required. the finishing touch using matching hardwearing flooring in a hall, up the stairs and on a landing can be a great way to create a common theme for the interior design of this high traffic area in any home. part of the stair make-over solution is a range of hard wearing laminate flooring in the same colours to give you more choice. apply a bead of glue to both inside surfaces, mist the glue with water as you did with the treads, and press firmly into position at the top of the stairs. Use several strips of masking tape to hold the top stair profile in position whilst the glue dries. Oops! you need to have finished the flooring on the landing before you glue the stair head in place and the profile is designed to overlap the finished floor.
