1 1 Introduc on The South Asian Associa on for Regional Coopera on (SAARC) was established in 1985 with a broad objec ve of promo ng the welfare of the people of South Asia through regional coopera on. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the founder members of the organiza on from its establishment. The number of member States reaches to eight when Afghanistan became a member of SAARC in The SAARC Group on Sta s cs (SAARCSTAT) was formed in 2004 to commence coopera on in the field of sta s cs among the member states. So far, seven mee ngs of heads of SAARC Sta s cal Organiza on have been held in different countries. The last mee ng was held in Sri-Lanka in These mee ngs have been very frui ul in sharing experiences and promo ng sta s cal system in South Asia region. Various decisions and ini a ves have been taken in the subsequent mee ngs to develop common concepts, classifica ons and standards for the produc on of comparable sta s cs and indicators of the region. As per the decision of the fourth mee ng of the heads of SAARC sta s cal organiza ons, a leaflet "SAARC in Figures" has been ini ated to publish by the Central Bureau of Sta s cs, Nepal. The present issue "SAARC in Figures 2016", a concise leaflet a empts to present sta s cal facts and figures on various social and economic situa ons of the member countries under nineteen broad headings. Central Bureau of Sta s cs (CBS), Nepal is pleased to bring out this third issue of the "SAARC in Figures" and believes that the leaflet would be helpful to briefly introduce the region. Besides, the leaflet would be useful to envisage the regional development agenda post-2015 for this region. CBS would like to thank all the NSOs of the member states and other concerned agencies for supplying informa on for this issue. Comments and construc ve sugges ons that would be useful to improve future issues are hear ly welcome. Central Bureau of Sta s cs Kathmandu, Nepal August 2016 SAARC.indd 1 8/24/2016 2:04:04 PM
