2 New Haven Chalk Art Festival Competition Rules Saturday, August 20, :00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Awards will be announced at 5:30 p.m. The Shops at Yale invite all professional and amateur artists, students and artist groups to participate in the New Haven Chalk Art Festival at Broadway Island in the heart of Yale University and the Broadway Shopping District. The festival will draw spectators from all over Connecticut to enjoy a day of art and entertainment in celebration of the local arts community. Bring your friends and family along too! While you re creating your masterpiece they can visit the Yale University Art Gallery, Yale Center for British Art, or shop and dine along Broadway at Apple, J.Crew, Urban Outfitters, KIKO Milano Cosmetics, Barbour, Denali, Lou Lou, Trailblazer, Tropical Smoothie Café, Tarry Lodge, Ashley s Ice Cream, Good Nature Market, Maison Mathis, Thali Too and more! Overview: Check-in will take place at The Shops at Yale tent on Broadway Island located at 56 Broadway, New Haven. Contestants can check-in anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. All works must be completed by 5:00 p.m. Artists may begin chalking immediately after check-in. The awards ceremony will start at 5:30 p.m. Competition Schedule: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.: Check-in at The Shops at Yale Tent at Broadway Island. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Work on chalk art during this period. 5:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m.: Entries will be judged. 5:30 p.m.: All chalk art entries must be completed and awards will be announced. Artists must be on-site to win. Judging: All artwork will be judged by local chalk artist Michael Micinilio for the Grand Prize. People s Choice: Spectators will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces of work for all age groups. See The Shops at Yale tent for voting cards.

3 About Michael Micinilio: If you have spent time in downtown New Haven over the past 15 years, chances are you have already seen Michael s chalk art! You may have seen his pastels in BAR on Crown Street, New Haven s favorite brew pub/pizzeria, where he creates four new pieces at the beginning of each month. Michael s artwork can also be seen at The Wine Thief, where he creates four massive 4 x 5 original pastels each year to mark the change of seasons. The Four Flours Baking Company on Chapel Street is one of Michael s customers too, where he regularly creates whimsical art adorning their chalk board wall. In addition to his unique brand of chalk artistry for both commercial and private clients as well as gallery showings, Michael also works as a professional Scenic Artist through United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, a labor union and professional association of Designers, Artists and Craftspeople. Working as a scenic artist over the past ten years, Michael has plied his artistic skills painting sets, props and backdrops on a multitude of Broadway, off Broadway and Television productions. Free Parking for Artists: Free parking is available for all contestants at the 150 York Street Garage, only one block from the event. Show your parking ticket from the garage to the staff at The Shops at Yale tent at the event for a free validation stamp. Age Groups/Divisions: Youth Division; ages 6 12 (kids freestyle zone, no registration needed) Teen Division; ages Adult Division; ages 18+ Adult Group Division; must be at least 2 artists, age 18+, representing an art group, organization or family. Entry Fee: There is no cost to participate, however you must submit one or more sketches of artwork with your registration to be considered. You may provide a link to you artwork.

4 Work Space Sizes: All single artists will be given one 3 x 3 square, on a black asphalt surface. Groups of 2 or more will be given 2 squares and the area in between the squares, measuring 8 x 3 total. The competition is open to all professional and amateur artists, students and artist groups to participate. Prizes: Grand Prize: $500 Gift Card to Hulls Art Supply & Framing 1 st and 2 nd Place Prizes: $50 or $25 gift cards to New Haven restaurants, cafes and eateries o Awarded in each division, eight total prizes. PLEASE NOTE: PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by end of day on Friday, August 12, 2016 to be eligible for prizes and guaranteed a space. Spaces forfeited by no-shows will be available for walk-ups at 11:30am the morning of the contest and will be eligible for prizes. No-shows who don t cancel by end of day on August 12, 2016 will not be invited to future events. A sketch of your intended artwork must be approved during registration. This is a family-friendly event. Content must be suitable for all ages. No profanity. Kids Freestyle Area does not require registration. Details & Competition FAQs: The check-in table will be at The Shops at Yale tent on Broadway Island at 56 Broadway. All participants must check-in prior to beginning their artwork. Participants will receive their space assignment at check-in. Space Assignments: Spaces will be assigned randomly on a first-come, first-serve basis. All age groups will receive a 3' x 3' square, adult groups will receive an 8 x 3 space. If you would like to be near someone specific, please Stephanie.Mcdonald@yale.edu ahead of the event and try to check-in at the same time at the event. Some spaces may have cracks and color or texture variations. Most or all spaces will be on black asphalt, depending on the number of entries. Spaces are limited, and will not be subject to transfer. Material Restrictions: Participants must bring their own chalk, brushes, and water. Chalk must be waterbased. Only water-soluble materials are permitted. All permanent media are prohibited. All supplies must be presented at check-in for inspection. Creativity is encouraged! Signing-Up the Day Of: People are welcome to register the day of the competition at the check-in tent any time between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. There is no guarantee that space will be available. Spaces are limited and fill-up fast; please try to register in advance of the event.
