2 AAU BASKETBALL PROGRAM GUIDE Goals & Objectives Program Vision Statement CAL Sports Academy s AAU Basketball Program embodies CAL s mission of Strength through Sports by providing a fun, challenging, well-organized and creative competitive travel basketball program that develops not only sport-specific skills but also confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, leadership, integrity and sportsmanship. Like all CAL Sports Academy programs, the AAU Basketball Program is committed to offering the highest quality coaching and support for the whole person, not just the athlete, with a special emphasis on instilling a can do attitude in each child and building a strong, supportive community. The AAU Basketball Program offers participants an opportunity to experience a higher level of training and play than our other basketball programs, with a corresponding intensity and level of commitment that further develops each player s character and skills. Goals of Program We strive to develop all players by building and improving their skills, confidence, fitness, initiative and a sense of teamwork. We are committed to developing coaches to the highest level through quality ongoing instructional clinics. We promote and encourage high standards of sportsmanship. We look to aggressively expand basketball opportunities to areas that are traditionally underserved. We aim to offer extended year-round training for AAU players who wish to continue developing with their teammates throughout the season, helping to create optimal future recruiting opportunities for players who are serious about the sport. We support the whole person, using sport as a vehicle to build physical fitness and coordination, develop character, and encourage excellence. Program Outline Governing Rules CAL Sports Academy AAU Basketball Program follows the rules governed by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball. Complete rules are available at: Boys Basketball: HANDBOOK.pdf Girls Basketball: CAL Sports Academy Use Only 2

3 Program Components AAU tryouts consist of 3 hours of sessions for each level (2-90 minute tryouts). Players are expected to attend all tryout sessions for the most accurate evaluation. Team selection occurs at the conclusion of the tryout sessions. Tryouts occur in January. The AAU regular season runs from February through June, with practices beginning after selection of the teams. Each grade level can expect to participate in 7 tournaments. Teams that qualify for Nationals could have an extended season through July and/or August. Any extended season will have an additional cost. AAU practice each week includes 3 hours of practice over two days. Each practice is 90 minutes in length. Games and tournaments are held primarily on weekends but may start on Friday evenings. CAL Sports Academy offers a Summer and Fall AAU Season for players to continue to play as a team year-round. Details on the Summer and Fall season are provided separately and is at an additional cost. 4 Assessing and Tracking Achievement Head Coaches track player progress through a series of documented assessment forms completed at tryout and throughout the season. Players are evaluated quantitatively (points scored, fouls etc.) and qualitatively (level of team play, sportsmanship, leadership, persistence, etc.). Coaches evaluate each athlete on a three-point scale (1 lowest level of skill to 3 highest level of skill) on skills outlined in the Skills Development section of this document. A formal scorecard is provided at the conclusion of tryouts and periodically throughout the season. Whenever possible, coaches communicate specific accomplishments and development of skills and character traits to parents through communications or face-to-face discussions. Coaches will schedule time appropriately with the athlete and parent. Any questions about the evaluation should be addressed at that time. Recognition of Participants CAL Sports Academy believes in acknowledging achievement and participation at all levels. All team members and families are invited to a banquet at the conclusion of the AAU season. Players banquet fee is included within the AAU Program fees. Family members are charged a fee to attend the banquet. All team members (who provide a timely RSVP to the banquet) receive a recognition gift. In addition, coaches may award specialty awards to players. Participation Eligibility Eligibility Rules are found on the AAU website as follows: Boys Eligibility: Rules.pdf Girls Eligibility: Evaluation The AAU Program is an intensive and highly competitive program. Not everyone who tries out is selected for a team. Players undergo extensive evaluation using detailed selection criteria. Coaches above all seek to create well-rounded, highly skilled teams of players with both the skills and attitude that will best serve the team and the program. Parents are not permitted to attend tryout sessions. If a parent attends the tryout session, it will jeopardize the player s chances of making a CAL Sports Academy team. Team Selection Tryouts include both skill drills and scrimmaging to assess overall ability and performance. Skills are presented in a mini-clinic format to create a positive learning experience during assessment. The evaluation gives CAL Sports Academy an opportunity to showcase its emphasis on continued player development. CAL Sports Academy Use Only 4

5 Coaches evaluate each athlete on a three-point scale (3 highest level of skill to 1 lowest level of skill) on skills outlined in the Skills Development section of this document. A formal scorecard is provided at the conclusion of tryouts. Head coaches select the highest-ranking players for each division to build the teams. A minimum of 8 players must be selected in order to field a team. Players and parents must complete all required program paperwork, including the Player and Parent Code of Ethics, in order to participate on the team. Notification All players are notified of their selection or non-selection after the final tryout. For athletes selected to a team, an is sent to parents of the players notifying of selection to a team. At that time, the parent is provided information about the program and expectation for payment. Parents are expected to acknowledge notification whether the player will or will not join the team. A $150 deposit is required upon acceptance. For athletes not selected to a team, Coach Corey Lord will contact the parent and provide a review of the athlete s scorecard and make program recommendations to continue to build the player s skill set. Any parent of players who are not selected for a team can submit a request for review to CAL Sports Academy President Corey A Lord. Scorecards for all athletes can be reviewed with the parent and player upon request.
