Missed exams can jeopardise the success of your semester abroad!

2 Accommodation Those of you who have applied for a BSEL provided accommodation will receive further information regarding that within the next week. Acceptance Letters/Visas All of you who are non-eu students: We have issued "Acceptance Letters", which you need in order to get your visa in time and sent them to your home university, so you should receive them very soon. All of you who are EU-citizens and do not need a visa for Germany are automatically accepted, as your university nominated you as exchange students to BSEL. We won t send out official admission documents to you, unless you explicitly ask for it. Course registration You will get further information concerning the exact registration procedure later. For courses that will be offered please see the attached general English Stream - please note that a specific one will be sent to you in a few weeks time in good time before course registration starts. Start of Orientation Period/Semester dates There will be an orientation period with several events in September, as well as an intensive German language course. Please see the attached academic calendar for the exact dates. We strongly recommend you to participate in the welcome meeting which will provide you with all relevant information about Berlin and BSEL! Health Insurance In order to enroll as exchange student at the BSEL you are required to hold a valid health insurance for the whole period of your stay. (One of the most important criteria for validity is that there are no financial limitations for medical coverage.) German health insurance companies offer special student coverage for approximately 80 Euros per month. Students from non-eu countries who do not possess a health insurance valid for Germany from their home country can sign a contract with a German health insurance company on the Welcome Day. We strongly recommend this because this insurance meets all the criteria for enrollment at a German university. Please also see the attached information paper.

For students from EU / EEA countries and Switzerland Students from EU Member States, EEA countries and Switzerland are eligible for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Provisional Replacement Certificate, respectively. If you don t own a European Health Insurance Card, please request it from your insurance company. Furthermore, please make sure that you are fully covered in Germany. If you have a Private Insurance you need to provide a confirmation regarding the scope, duration and benefits of the contract. In terms of scope, the private insurance shall be almost identical to the compulsory health insurance, which means that the below listed benefits shall be included. Please note that you need to provide evidence that they are part of your contract (in German or English): Medical and dental treatment Medicines, medical supplies, and curative care Hospitalization Medical rehabilitation measures Maternity care and childbirth All services must be available at all times, not only in the case of a medical emergency No exclusion of services to the greatest possible extent No limitation for refundable benefits Low co payment amount Please note: Travel insurances usually only cover medical emergencies and are valid for a limited period of time only. They are not appropriate for a whole study visit, as they do not fulfil the above mentioned requirements. Your health insurance cover / confirmation has to be recognised by a statutory health insurance company in Berlin. You can do so at the International Office after your arrival in Berlin. 1

The easiest way to fulfil this requirement is to enter the German public health insurance system. Once in Berlin, the International Office will help you establishing contact to a German public health insurance company where you can easily sign in and get your health insurance. This health insurance includes an unlimited coverage for all medical treatments that might occur during your stay (Cost: approx. 78 per month, subject to change). It also covers the costs for medical emergencies throughout the European Union. Important: The validity of the public student s health insurance policy is bound to the semester dates. This means that you might need to take out a travel insurance for the trip to Berlin as well as for the first few days until the beginning of the semester! Please note that we don t recommend you to upgrade your current health insurance. Usually, the coverage you ll get is not as unlimited as required by German laws, meaning that you would have to take out an additional German insurance. Hence, the easiest, safest and mostly cheapest way is to enter the German public health insurance system. If needed, the BSEL International Office will be pleased to provide their assistance. 2

6 How to use this document: This document lists the English speaking modules that are given every semester at BSEL department 1. However, BSEL offers additional English modules which are provided in a specific English stream available before the respective semester (to coincide with the course registration period). For learning agreement purposes, please refer to this General English Stream. In order to check the individual modules contents, please visit our course database at ( Courses Search for Lectures Enter Course no. as indicated in English Stream Scroll down to Exams/Modules ) Important: Exchange students are allowed to pick a maximum of 32 hours/week or 40 ECTS, respectively. The registration to these courses will take place about 2-3 weeks before the beginning of the semester, i.e. mid-march for the summer semester, and mid-september for the winter semester. We will send you a notification in due time, as well as the detailed English stream listing times and lecturers for the respective semester. Please note that, due to capacity reasons, it is important to register within the period we will state then. Students who fail to register on time cannot be guaranteed to get admitted to courses, how urgent they may need to. In these cases, we might only be able to offer alternative courses. All information provided in this document are subject to change without prior notice. BSEL reserves the right at any time to modify its course offer. Please note that there are courses with two different course numbers. This numbering has no academic reasons, and there is no difference regarding scope, contents and ECTS. Hence, exchange students are allowed to choose either one or the other number. In cases where they will be allocated to the same course with a differing number, this is no reason for Learning Agreement changes, as the subject is identical. However, for internal reasons, the registrations sometimes are shifted to the same subject with a different subject number. Again, this is no reason for Learning Agreement changes. *Subject to change without notice Page 2 of 11

7 Examination Regulations There is a specific procedure you have to go through in order to be able to retake examinations. This procedure varies based on the reason why you need to re-sit exams, which will be explained in the following: Reason A: not able to attend exam due to illness or some other valid reasons 1. Fill out the form and send it to the International Office within 3 working days Send the form filled out to internex@hwr-berlin.de and attach an attestation from your doctor, if you are ill for the first time Hand in an attestation from an AMTSARZT, if you have been ill before for the same exam. A normal attestation will not be accepted. If you cannot attend the exam for another VALID reason (own illness, illness of own child, delivery etc.), you have to attach a written proof 2. Confirm the participation in the substitute examination (Ersatzprüfung) before the end of deadline* You will only be allowed to attend the Substitute Examination at the beginning of the next semester, if you have confirmed your participation before the end of the deadline* If you do not confirm that before the deadline, you will automatically lose your 1 st and examination attempts. Upon reregistration for the course in the following semester, you will be registered for your 3 rd (and last) attempt. Reason B: no show/ fail exam 1. fill out the form and send it to the International Office If you do not turn up for a registered exam or fail it, you have to register for the re-sit exam before the deadline*. If you do not register for the re-sit before the end of the deadline*, you will automatically lose your 2 nd examination attempt and will be registered for the 3 rd attempt, when you re-register for the course next semester. *IMPORTANT: please refer to the deadlines (announcement Studienbüro 1, ground floor of building B, or International Office). Any application received after the deadline will automatically be rejected. Page 3 of 11
