1 Jesus Teaches About Helping Scripture: Luke 10:25-37 Bible Memory: Luke 10:27 : Lesson 12 Heart to Heart Teacher Devotion The Samaritan man commended by Jesus had learned to love a neighbor as much as he loved himself. You may come in contact this week with someone who is hurting. You can choose to love that person as much as you love yourself, or you can ignore the person s needs and go on your way. Maybe you ll remember Jesus parable, change your plans, and offer to help. If you do, you will be a good neighbor! 2 In (10 15 minutes) 1 Use one of these activities to help children explore helping others. Use the Bible Memory activity to introduce the memory verse. Welcome Welcome each child by name. Engage early arrivers by offering one or more of the activities described on the Additional Activities for Unit 3 page. Quick Step Top 10 SAY: We re going to explore helping today. Let s see whether we can come up with some top 10 lists for helping. Write Home at the top of the board. Ask kids to think of people who need their help at home. Then they can call out ways they can help those people. List their ideas on the board. When 10 ways to help have been listed, review the list. Is there a number 1 way that everyone helps at home? marker Note Save the lists created to use during Make It Real and Live It Out. Repeat, asking kids to name ways they help in other places, such as at school or church. Discuss helping people who are new to their neighborhoods or people who have disabilities. SAY: We re going to learn that Helping or Not Helping Have kids gather in a circle. Teach children sign language for the word help one hand lifts the other hand up to represent the concept of helping. Explain that you will be describing (or showing pictures of) different situations. The children are to show the sign for help if the sentence describes someone helping. They are to shake their heads no if it describes someone not helping. SAY: Maria saw a girl at school fall and scrape her knee. Maria took her to the nurse s office. (helping; show sign) Anna played games while her sister cleaned their room. (no) Ethan forgot to take out the trash, so his dad had to do it. (no) Chantel s friend couldn t play until she did some chores. Chantel left and asked another friend to play with her. (no) Antone told a friend who was lonely about Jesus. (helping) (optional: pictures of helping/not helping situations) Something More! Bible SAY: Listen for the word neighbor while I read the Bible Memory. Read aloud Luke 10:27. SAY: Jesus says we are to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. 3 Explore His Word (20 minutes) 2 Use all of these activities to help children tell what Jesus taught about helping others. Bible Background for the Teacher The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was 17 miles long, and it descended from about 2,500 feet above sea level to about 800 feet below sea level. After leaving Jerusalem, a traveler would pass through Bethany. After leaving Bethany, there were no other settlements along the way. It was a rocky, rough area with many caves and drop-offs. It was known as a road where bandits hid. Priests and other religious leaders traveled frequently between Jericho, a priestly city, and Jerusalem, the site of the temple. Priests and Levites were religious leaders. They could be expected to help a person in need. The Samaritans and the Jews were not on friendly terms. By answering the man s question with a parable, Jesus was able to disarm prejudice and prevented objection to any conclusion but the obvious one. Worship Time If you want to offer a time of worship, see the Unit 3 Worship Time Ideas included in the Resources printable files. marker, Bibles, Resources sheet 8 Bible Story Name Cards and Props 12a 12j, scissors, yarn, backpack, Teaching Picture 12, Resources audio track 4 (or lesson 12 Bible Story Script printable file), media player (optional: gauze bandage roll, small bottle with lid, coins) Bible Exploration Luke 10:25-37 SAY: Today s Bible story comes once again from the book of Luke. Write Luke 10:25 on the board. Help kids turn to Luke 10:25 in their Bibles, and ask for a volunteer to read the verse. The man who asked Jesus a question was a teacher of God s law. When Jesus answered the man, Jesus told a story. Some things in Bible times were different than they are today. Let s look at a few pictures before we hear Jesus story. Show 12g. Strips of cloth were often used as bandages because the people did not have adhesive bandages like we have today. Show 12h. Medicine was different too. There were no tubes of antibiotic cream to put on a cut or bruise. Instead, oil was poured from a bottle. The oil was good for soothing the skin and taking away soreness. Show 12i. The places where people stayed when they traveled were different too. There were no hotels, but there were places called inns where people could stay. Most travelers provided their own food and sleeping mats. Having some money would have been important. Now that we know more about the way things were done in Bible times, let s act out the story that Jesus told. Choose six volunteers to act out the Bible story. Introduce the story characters and give each volunteer one of the name cards to wear. If you are not using real props, place cards 12g 12i in the backpack and give the bag to the Samaritan, who can remove the cards as the items are used during the story. Before Class Cut 30" lengths of yarn; tie a piece to each name card so kids can wear the name cards around their necks. If using real props, place the gauze, bottle with lid, and coins in the backpack. Explain that you will play a recording of the Bible story. Kids who are wearing the name cards should act out the story as it is told. Play the recorded Bible story (or read it from the Resources Bible story script). Give prompts as needed. Note: If you have a small class, provide toy people figures and let the children move the figures as you play the recording. When the Bible story is finished, thank those who acted out the story. As you just heard, Jesus finished His story by asking a question. Jesus asked, Who do you think was a neighbor to the man who had been robbed and beaten? Who would like to answer Jesus question? 4 The man gave Jesus a good answer. He said, The one who helped him was his neighbor. Show Teaching Picture 12. Jesus said, You are right. Go and do the same kinds of things the Samaritan man did. Jesus had used a story to teach the people that God wanted them to help and show love to all people people they knew and people they didn t know, people who were the same and people who were different from them. God loves everyone, and we should too. Bible Review Activity ASK: What did Jesus teach about helping? (God wants us to help and show love to all people.) How many people didn t help the injured man? (two) How many people helped the injured man? (one) Activities p. 27, pencils (optional: Resources Lesson 12 Review Questions printable file) Distribute the activity pages and pencils. Read the directions aloud and do the page together. As time allows, use the Resources review questions to help children further review the story. SAY: Jesus said the Samaritan man was a neighbor to the injured man. When we help others, we are being good neighbors too. Remind the children how to find the book of Luke, using the table of contents in their Bibles. Help kids turn to Luke 10:27, and ask for a volunteer to read the verse. Display the Bible Memory poster. Ask volunteers to tell what word each picture on the poster represents. (Pictures: Love, heart, strength, mind, love) Repeat the verse together. SAY: We should give our very best when we love God and help our neighbors. al Bible Skill Builder Have kids work as partners. Be sure each pair has a Bible. Call out the name of a Bible book. Encourage partners to help each other find that book in the Bible. When everyone has found the book, say Help your neighbor. One person from each pair should move to another partner. 5 Make It Real (10 15 minutes) 3 Use one of these activities to help children name ways they can Activities p. 28, pencils Teaching Tip If you have a small class, let children work together on the page. Quick Step Helping Others SAY: help others and be good neighbors. Let s name ways we can Distribute the activity pages and pencils. Read the directions aloud. Divide the class into pairs (or small groups). Assign each pair one or two of the sentences to complete. When the pairs are done, ask each pair a question about its sentence. ASK: What are ways you can use your mouths to help others? What can you do with your hands to help others? How could you use your feet to help others? What is your favorite way to help someone? SAY: Helping others is not always easy. We might get our hands dirty when we We might have to stop what we are doing and go out of our way to But when we do those things, we are doing what Jesus taught us to do. Resources sheet 7 Jesus Teaches Us Game Cards, basket Consider placing a child with special needs on a team with an assistant (or with a group of children who understand the child s particular challenges). Jesus Teaches Us Game SAY: Let s play the Jesus Teaches Us game and learn more about sharing and helping. Have the kids form two teams. Have the teams line up on opposite sides of the room, facing each other. Let the teams take turns choosing cards from the basket. Team members should work together to give a response or do as the card says. The goal is to see how quickly the two teams can meet in the center of the room. When the teams meet, members of opposing teams should give each other high fives. SAY: When we work together, we help each other and can finish a task or reach a goal more quickly. We should do our best to work together and help each other. 6 Live It Out (10 minutes) 4 Use one of these activities to help children help someone. Quick Step Helping Hands SAY: We have learned that help others, and we ve named ways we can What is the one part of our bodies we use most often to help others? (hands) Distribute construction paper and colored pencils. Ask the children to help each other trace around one of their hands on the paper. Tell kids that they each should write (or draw) inside their hand outline a way they will help someone by using their hands. (If you did the Top 10 activity during In, kids can refer to the lists as they name ways they will help.) Then kids can cut out their hand outlines, punch holes in the tops, and string with yarn, forming reminders that can be hung. construction paper, colored pencils (or washable markers), scissors, hole punch, yarn Something More! Let kids trace around their feet and think of ways to help others by using their feet. Have kids bring their completed hand reminders to a closing prayer time. Let kids share how they will help others this week, and encourage them to follow through on what they are planning to do. Explain that kids might not know the people they are helping, but that s OK. Let the kids choose which project they will do. If kids choose the cleaning project, show the cleaning supplies and explain necessary steps to cleaning the room. Assign cleaning tasks. Write a note and leave it on the table, telling the custodian the room has been cleaned. If kids choose to collect food items, have them write reminder notes they can take home. The notes should tell what kind of items are needed and when the items are to be brought. Before kids disperse to work on the helping projects, ask them to gather for a time of prayer. Gather cleaning supplies that kids can use. If offering a cleaning project, be aware of children who have a sensitivity to strong smells due to sensory integration challenges. Provide fragrance-free cleaners. Saying Good-bye Make sure children have projects and activity pages they have done in class.
